What's Your Take on Possessions or "Sapi"?

This is something that I really can't explain.

How can you explain "sapi"? There are a couple of new cases in the Philippines wherein 60+ and almost 20 students were seemingly possessed at the same time.

1. They were speaking in Latin.
2. They were speaking in a different tone of voice.
3. They have superhuman strength.
4. They go crazy whenever a bible, rosary or the likes are placed on them.

Any scientific explanation? Religious? Or were they really possessed by spirits?

From a religious standpoint

Spirit or demon possession was evident in Bible. Jesus, His Apostles and disciples cast demons or evil spirits out of possessed people (even animals). Catholic theology states that "angels" are ethereal beings having intelligence and will. Fallen "angels" or demons can "possess" individuals without their knowledge or consent

Possessed individuals displayed the following abilities: hidden knowledge (gnosis), foreign languages (glossolalia), drastic changes in vocal intonation and facial structure, fear of "Christian" holy men, the appearance of injuries and superhuman strength

Catholic clergy should discern demonic possession from "mental illness", Exorcisms are "performed" only if the priest (given clearance of a bishop) have found sufficient signs that an individual is possessed by a "demon". With this, the clergyman taps into his "arsenal" which includes prayers, intercession of angels and saints, litanies, rosaries, crucifixes, bibles, holy water, etc. Catholic baptism per se is considered an "exorcism" in come cases

Victims can be possessed because of their own doing thru occult practices (spirit of the glass, ouija boards, etc), mortal sin, loss of faith, or psychological trauma.

On the other hand, Science views "demonic" possession as a "mental illness" (hysteria, mania, psychosis, Tourette's syndrome, epilepsy, schizophrenia or dissociative identity disorder) since "paranormal/supernatural event" is not recognized as "scientific" phenomena

What is a Jinn (Engkanto ang closes term sa tagalog)?



The Jinn (Engkanto ang closes term sa tagalog) live in an established world unseen to us. They possess some characteristics in common with humans, such as the ability to think and reflect. Similarly, they also have the ability to choose between the path of good and the path of evil in the same manner as humans.



The Jinn were created before the creation of mankind, and their origin is from fire:
"Verily We created man of potter's clay of dark mud altered. And the Jinn did We create aforetime of a flameless fire"
{Noble Quran 15:26-27}.

They are called "jinn" because they are obscured from human sight.



Satan and the Jinn
Satan, which God Almighty mentions to us many times in the Quran, is from the world of the jinn. He used to worship God at the beginning of his creation. He lived among the angels in the heavens. He entered Paradise. But then he disobeyed God Almighty when he refused to prostrate to Adam, out of pride, arrogance and envy. Therefore God Almighty cast him out of from His mercy.

Their ability and strength
Allah (SWT) has given the jinn power and ability that He has not given humans. Allah (SWT) has informed us of some of their ability, including great speed and movement.



Their knowledge in building and other crafts
Allah (SWT) has informed us that the jinn which were subjected to the control of the Prophet Solomon performed many feats which were evidence of their physical ability, intelligence and skill.

Their ability to take on other shapes
The jinn have the ability to take on the shapes of humans or animals.



Their weaknesses and inabilities
- In some aspects, the jinn and devils are strong while in others they are weak.
- Allah (SWT) did not give Satan the ability to compel mankind or force them to misguidance and disbelief.
- He has power over the believers due to their sins.
- If a slave holds fast to Islam, has a sincere belief in his heart and stays within the bounds set by Allah (SWT), then Satan departs and flees from him.
- Allah (SWT) made all the jinn and devils subservient to the Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him) and they all performed what he wished.

The Jews lied about Solomon
The Jews and those who follow them in using jinn through the art of magic allege that Solomon used magic to gain mastery over the jinn. Many of the early scholars mention that when Solomon died, the devils recorded books of magic and disbelief and put them under his throne and they said, Solomon used these books to subjugate the jinn.



Solomon disbelieved not; but the devils disbelieved, teaching mankind magic and that which was revealed to the angels in Babel, Harut and Marut. Nor did they (the two angels) teach it to anyone till they had said: We are only a temptation, therefore disbelieve not (in the guidance of Allah)...
(Noble Quran 2:102).

They are incapable of performing miracles
The jinn are not able to perform miracles like those of the Messengers that are meant as proof for the truth of their missions. Some of the disbelievers alleged that the Quran was from the workings of Satan, so Allah (SWT) revealed:
It isn’t the Shaitans (the Devils) who came down with it _ (the Qur’an).
They are not worthy of it. Nor are they able (to do it)!
Indeed, they are kept too far away to be able to hear it.
{Noble Quran 26:210-212}



God Almighty challenges all of mankind and the jinn in the following verse:
"Say: Verily, though mankind and jinn should assemble to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce the like thereof though they were helpers one of another"
{Noble Quran 17:88}

"I created Jinn and Mankind only in order that they might worship Me."
{Noble Quran 51:56}

I know that science would explain it as a mental illness. But how can they explain 60+ students experiencing it?

Anyone else who'd like to say that there's nothing religious or paranormal when it comes to "sapi"? Anyone who can offer a practical explanation?

Meron din explanation jan mga psychologist/psychiatrist parang social something thingy (di ko na maalala yung term). Ganun talaga mahirap paniwalaan ang mahirap ipaliwanag, but it doesn't mean hindi na sila totoo diba?

this sh1t happens and india too, and yes, indian godmen successfully "cast out" these "demons." does that mean the one true god deputized them? maybe.

one other thing tho, skeptics lead by the indian version of James Randi can perform exorcisms as well by duplicating the tricks employed by the godmen. (flowers inside "sealed" coconut trick for example) placebo.

I agree. But I always like to see things from different angles. Frankly, I want to know what the non-believers think but they haven't replied here yet. Asan na yung mga hindi naniniwala sa mga paranormals?

i have nieces and nephews in a city of the south. one of niece's maids got possessed. my nephew wouldn't believe coz they hadn't seen or witnessed an actual demonic possession. you know typical city boy, modern ikanga at patay na nga naman daw ang era ng ganyan ganyan. sa madaling salita, di pa din sya kumbinsido kahit nakita nya ng nangingisay ang babae nung araw na yun. pero kasi nga nag-iiba ang boses, na instead of babae, nagiging lalaki, para na din daw syang naniwala. kelangan nilang icontrol ang sinapian kasi takot ang pamangkin kong babae na saktan sila at ang mga kids, so kelangan nilang icontain ang sinapian while naghanap pa ng pari. in short hinawakan nila ang sinapian. tumilapon ang tatlo, tatay nila, kapatid nyang lalaki din at yung nephew kong youngest. ayun nakita nilang naglakad na nakalutang.

can science do the math on this?
