Foreign Online Shopping and Custom Fees

Hi Guys! I'm sure a lot of people here are into online shopping. I have a few questions kasi I'm planning to purchase a shoe and apparel from a UK shopping website. They ship the items daw using Royal Air Mail and I have to claim it daw via the local post office. I have a few questions:

1. Do I have to pay custom fees in Pasay or can I just pay 35 pesos in the post office kasi I've read in Ebay forums that Postage Mails such as USPS in US and Royal Air Mail in UK are free from customs tax and I just have to pay 35 pesos in our local post office? Is this true?
2. Kapag EMS naman daw yung method of delivery like FedEx, sure daw na may customs tax based from the experiences of online buyers na nabasa ko from Ebay. Do you have similar experiences?
2. Second, can share your experiences with these kinds of transactions whenever you are buying from an online shop abroad?

I hope you can help me guys. Thank you!

  • 1. There is no such thing as free from customs tax. If I were you, I'd have the package delivered as far away from Pasay post office. Saken sa QC post office bumabagsak, mababait sila and I only pay the 40pesos storage fee. I once ordered TOMS shoes from the US, nung hindi pa uso dito. Ang nakatanggap was yung sa Pasay. I paid 1,700 for the shoes, I was charged 1,000 for customs!

    2. Again, no such thing na depende sa courier, whether FedEx ba or USPS yan. Everything dumadaan sa customs. Nagpa-FedEx ako dati ng designer bag worth $1400, I got away with just paying PhP500 sa customs.

I think ang main factors in determining yung icharge sayo is
    1) the item itself (mainit talaga sila sa footwear and gadgets)
    2) item description. Pag nakalagay na "used" or "broken", hindi na nila papansin.
    3) declared value. The higher the declared value, mas mataas ang singil. Kung babaan mo naman, your item will only be insured for that much and most sellers don't allow this.

If the item is worth $40 above, may tax na yun. Pero kapag di naman umabot sa $40, yung storage fee lang ang babayaran mo which is only 40 pesos. :D

ah so dito ba pumapasok yung 35 at 40 pesos na payment mula sa post office?

@Racetrack- thank you! super na-enlighten ako! So dadaan talaga lahat sa Pasay regardless kung postal mail or EMS? Ang sabi kasi sa Ebay forum, pag postal mail daw, they do not charge. Pero pag EMS daw, they will definitely charge daw based from their experiences. The downside of postal mail was wala daw tracking number.

Regarding na gusto kong purchase, dalawang sapatos worth 3.3k all in all kasi super mura nga dun sa UK website plus free shipping. Sorry if makulit. Pero thank you talaga!
  • Ay hindi. I mean, lahat ng packages dumadaan sa customs. There's a customs officer assigned at every local post office. Pero I live in QC kasi, so normally my packages go to the QC post office talaga. Never ako nagbayad ng more than 40pesos.

Kasi nasa Pasay yung hub ng most couriers.

Best advice I can give is, paship mo sa QC para sa QC post office mapunta yung package. Avoid having the package go to somewhere near Pasay.

Ok gets. So it means per post-office pala may customs officer. First time ko din oorder kasi online. Sana masagot ito ng ibang pexers based from their experiences. Pero thanks a lot race track! Gets ko na ngayon. Super enlightened ako.
  • my experiences: bought 3 perfumes sa strawberry.net, province namin ang delivery address na nilagay ko, dahil sa takot ko sa mga nababasa ko about sa customs nga sa metro manila. ok naman, walang bayad, deniliver ng post office kartero sa bahay namin, walang bayad at all! ewan ko lang kung may bearing yung kilala kami sa bayan namin and the mayor is a relative:) ang catch lang, matagal sya, halos nag one month from metro manila to province?!

then, ayun nga, nainip na ko dun sa 1 month na yun plus hassle pa na ipinadala naman ulit sakin from province to metro manila since i live here. next order, strawberry.net uli, 1 perfume and 1 face cream, dito ko na directly pinadala dito, pasig. 40 pesos lang binayaran ko sa post office pero took me 2 days to claim. nung una ko punta, i only had the post office notice to claim a package. sabi sakin, dapat dala ko din yung invoice or email copy nung invoice of my online purchase. so i returned the next day, and the invoice amounted to 120USD btw. the day before, nakipag chikahan na ako dun customs staff dun habang nakikiusap na kung pwede iclaim na kahit wala yung invoice. ayaw pero friendly naman na sinabi dalhin ko lang invoice the next day. when i returned and they saw the invoice, ayun, ni-release na sakin yung package with just 40 pesos payment, pero sinabi nila na above 50USD worth daw, dapat may tax na, hehe..so i guess it pays to be friendly, sinabi ko din pala na for personal use naman yun, obviously with the face cream hehe..

i bought in amazon.com na din pala, mga dvd's and books, 2 pcs. lang usually. delivered right in our doorstep lang din. no additional charges.

right now, i'm looking at pobox. i plan on buying a kindle,ray-ban, watch, clothes and a high end home theater speakers na di pa available dito. Anyone know about this service? it basically have items delivered at their california warehouse or is it new jersey? and the delivered to their warehouse in marikina and then to homes na of customers. Is this really that easy? walang catch and customs fees here as additional?? or di na ba to ini-inspeksyon t hinaharang ng customs dito?

Wow! thank you mam for sharing your experiences! By the way mam, through postal mail yan I guess kasi almost one month dineliver?

Regarding pobox,i haven't heard of it pa. Pero other pexers might already have experiences regarding it.
