Red Cubs beat Junior Pirates by 135 points

The San Beda Red Cubs showed absolutely no mercy yesterday when it humiliated the Lyceum Juniors Pirates by an astounding margin of 135 points, 163-28, yesterday in the juniors division of the 2011 National Collegiate Athletic Association at the Flying V Arena in San Juan.

In hacking out the gruesome win, the boys from Mendiola had set a record of a 44-0 start in the first quarter alone.

That set the tone of a long, embarassing struggle for the Pirates as the defending champions never gave them a centimeter of a chance until the final horn.

The margin was the biggest in the NCAA since August 9, 2009 when the Red Cubs, led by then stars Baser Amer, Art Dela Cruz, Dan Sara and Ponso Gotladera with legendary coach Ato Badolato at the helm, beat guest team Angeles University Foundation juniors squad by 144, 168-24.

Red Cubs coach Britt Reroma said they never planned to beat the Junior Pirates by a wide margin, but only asked consistency and intensity from his young squad.

"Siyempre as defending champion gusto namin consistency and good habits for us. Iyon gusto namin, hindi naman namin in-expect na ganun. Gusto lang din namin i-maintain yung ganung laro. Mataas ang intensity at excited ang mga bata kasi matagal bago kami nakapaglaro ng first game namin," said Reroma.

A total of eight in Red Cubs finished in twin-digits.
