We can make a descent play in 12.8sec. Isang dagger 3 para OT. Kung hindi lang suspended is Taha the outcome of the game is not like this.

*okay*

Lastimosa ball-hog mode as usual. Buti na lang si Jan Tan ang hero! May souvenir siko pa galing kay Parada yan! :glee:

FFS! 0-2 na ang angry birds. 2 close games that could have gone either ways, hopefully it won't nip our chances in advancing in the final 4.

    Great game by the Blazers.

Do i smell trouble here?? MIT predicted to be in the F4 and even in the finals are 0-2? Hmmmm. Lets see. Second game pa lang naman. Saka tama sabi nila. Iba ang outcome nito kung nandiyan si Taha in the middle. Goodluck Cardinals.

Nag ala-Dirk na naman si Pascual kanina, imbes na sa loob trumabaho sa labas eh. :bop: Di bale, masyado pang maaga para magpanic! ;)

PS: Laki na ng improvement ni Ighalo at ni Cantos. Goodluck next game! Tiwala lang

    Blazers shock Mapúa

“MAPÚA’s more talented. They’re bigger. They’re more athletic. Everybody is expecting us to lose.”

This was what the College of St. Benilde’s Richard del Rosario told his players before the start of the game.

But, in an effort to make them believe in overcoming the daunting challenge before them, the third-year head coach said, “sometimes, it’s not all about talent. If you play with your hearts, it will make a big difference.” Del Rosario’s pregame speech did ignite a fire in the hearts of College of Saint Benilde as it stunned the Mapúa Institute of Technology Cardinals, 70-67 in NCAA Season 87 last Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at the Arena in San Juan City.

CSB picked up its first win of the tournament after losing its first two games to the Lyceum of the Philippines University and San Sebastian College-Recoletos. On the other hand, Mapúa, tagged as a preseason favorite, remained winless at 0-2.

Mapúa’s highly-touted center, Yousef Taha, did not see action in this contest as he was serving a one-game suspension for throwing the ball at Kevin Alas in their defeat to the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights on opening day. Del Rosario saw this as an opportunity to score an upset.

“We’re a smaller team compared to Mapúa and we’re lucky that Taha was suspended for this game. We had to take advantage of that. We stuck to the zone but we got badly outrebounded in this game. We just wanted to keep the game close. If they make their outside shots, so be it as long as we challenge their shots. We wanted them to get out of their rhythm kasi man for man, they’re more talented,” remarked the third-year tactician. The Cardinals dominated the boards as they caromed 54 rebounds against the Blazers’ 35.

Mapúa’s defensive strategy in the first half was focused on slowing down CSB’s Carlo Lastimosa as Andretti Stevens and Kenneth Ighalo took turns in denying the talented shooting guard possession of the basketball. But, while they were successful in doing so, it opened up opportunities for other Blazers to score.

Jan Tan led St. Benilde with 15 points, including a crucial baseline jumper with 4:33 to go to put his team up 67-63. But, despite this feat, his coach still believes that he can do more. “I think Jan Tan has to believe in himself more. Yun lang ang kulang sa kanya, confidence eh. He’s a big man with a good shooting touch from the perimeter. He just has to build up his confidence. Mas gagaling siya as a player,” said del Rosario.

Lastimosa, last year’s Rookie of the Year, finished with 11 points while noticeably making an effort to get his teammates involved on offense. According to del Rosario, he was instructed by him to do so. “I showed him (Lastimosa) the stats last game. He played 30 minutes, scored 20 points but had zero assists. So, I told him na ‘You have to get your teammates involved.’”

“I liked the way we moved the ball in the first half. He has to trust his teammates. He was not the top scorer today. Way below his average but we won. That’s the most important thing. We got everybody involved and that’s the only way we can win,” he added.

The Cardinals had a chance to tie the game with a three-pointer after coming off a timeout with 12.8 seconds remaining. Allan Mangahas, Jason Pascual, and rookie Josan Nimes moved the ball around the three-point arc, but all of them seemed tentative to take the big shot. With time winding down, Nimes decided to fire and missed badly.

The Blazers’ 2-3 zone defense sucked the redbirds into jacking up 41 triples. The Cardinals only converted on eight of those attempts, and shot a dismal 31 percent all in all from the field.

Now at 1-2, CSB’s next opponent is San Beda College in a game that will take place on July 22. The Cardinals, meanwhile, are still searching for their first win of the season and will get another crack at that elusive victory on Monday, July 18 against the Lyceum Pirates.

    The scores:

    CSB 70 – Tan 15, Romero 11, Lastimosa 10, Grey 10, Altamirano 8, de la Paz 5, McCoy 4, Sinco 3, Taha 3, Pate 0

    Mapúa 67 – Ighalo 12, Sarangay 10, Mangahas 10, Nimes 9, Banal 9, Cantos 6, Ranises 6, Pascual 4, Stevens 1, Parala 0

    Quarter scoring: 15-15, 33-30, 56-57, 70-67.
