Cars in News Articles

I just noticed something whenever I read news articles involving cars, especially like carjacking incidents, speeding and the like. (Not including the weekly motoring section of the newspaper.) When the car involved is from the mainstream brand, the article mentions what the brand and model of the car (e.g. so-and-so's Toyota Corolla...) but if it is from a luxury brand, the news item only mentions the brand (e.g. a white BMW was...) and never the model. Why is it like that?

News reporters are not that technical when it comes to cars.

Mainstream cars need to be detailed in order to be identified amongst the crowd.
