    [official] ☜♥☞ Joongbo Couple ☜♥☞ Newly Wed's 1st Open House ♡Kim Hyun Joong (SS501) & Hwang Bo (GENERAL)♡

Hyunjoong's Nicknames: Shillang, Kid Groom, Hyunjoongie
Hwangbo's Nicknames: Hwang Buin, Buin, Yeobo (Honey/Darling/Sweetheart/Lover)
What Fans Call Them: Ssangchu / Ssangcho / Lettuce Couple, Awkward Couple, Joongbo Couple, Older / Younger Couple

Ssangchu's love story started on the 11th of May 2008, as the variety show "We Got Married" introuduced their new cast, to portray an older/younger couple.

Kim Hyunjoong charmed his way to a lot of the audiences' hearts with his 4 dimensional character and witty comments. Many believed that his way of escaping arguments (following his wife, sidetracking her by making her laugh) made their married life more carefree and full of happiness.

Hwangbo, most popular because of her "General" or rather tomboyish character, was unexpectedly a very feminine wife. Understanding and loving, Hwangbo received a lot of love after the viewers saw how she takes care of her husband, making clothes for him, cooking for him & even preparing medicine when she felt Hyunjoong was stressed with his schedules. But not only is she the perfect housewife, she can also catch up with her husband's competitive nature in the many games they played in the show.

"Honestly, I didn't express it but in my heart.. you helped me a lot. Before I met you.. I wanted to tell you this.. I used to live a very confined life... I don't know if you'll believe this but besides my friends, no one knows me, what kind of person I am... But I think Buin now knows.

A lot of my dark and gloomy ways,.. This goes on tv but I'm not just saying this, I think you really changed me a lot.. at the right time.

In a way I strongly feel like you were someone sent by God. Honestly I just wanted to tell you this."

  • SS501

SS501 (pronounced as Double-S 501 or Deo Beul E Seu Oh Gong Il in Korean) is a South Korean boy band under management of Daesung Entertainment, also known as DSP Entertainment. The name of the band is a combination of the alphabet and numbers that have special meanings in them. The first “S” stands for “Super”. The second “S” is an abbreviation for "Star". The number 5, 0, and 1 means "five members united as one forever".

    2005-2006: Debut
SS501 debuted on June 8, 2005 with their first single "Kyeonggo" (Korean: "경고", "WARNING"), with a second single "Snow Prince" released in late 2005. The group was inactive in Korea for most of 2006, although they had a fan meeting in Japan in April.[citation needed] The reason was due to Heo Young Saeng's throat condition which required a surgery, thus resulting in a need for time to fully recover.[citation needed]. In mid-2006, they held their first concert, "Step Up Concert" in Osaka, Japan. In late 2006, they returned to Korea in order to promote their first full album, which was released on November 10 and titled S.T.01 Now. Singles from the album included "Unlock" and "Four Chance". As well as promoting the album on various variety and music shows, they also filmed a show on MNet called SOS. The group also lent their voices for the 2006 animated movie Pi's Story.

2007-2008: Japanese activities, 'Boys Over Flowers'
Later in 2007, the group debuted in the Japanese market. A Japanese fan club has been established with the name of "Triple S Japan"; it officially debuted on March 25, 2007, when SS501 had their first official meeting with the group. The group released their Japanese single "Kokoro", alongside multiple versions, including one with all members and five others featuring the members individually. The single debuted at #5 on the Oricon chart, and move to #3 the next day. A full album was released later in the year.
In 2008, SS501 returned to Korea with their single Deja Vu released on March 8, 2008. The title track was the first song to be promoted, and they started their comeback on music channel M.Net's M Countdown.[1] After success with their single "Deja Vu", they began to promote their second single, "A Song Calling For You". They performed their Goodbye Stage on Music Bank on June 6, 2008, to return to Japanese activities.

On October 2, 2008, an official announcement confirmed that leader Kim Hyun Joong was part of the cast for the Korean version of Hana Yori Dango, officially named Boys Over Flowers. It was broadcast on KBS in the first half of 2009, with a total of 25 episodes and a few special episodes.

With both Park Jung Min (Danny Park on the musical Grease) and Kim Hyun Joong on solo activities, the next SS501 album was pushed back to July 2009. As such, the other three members released a project album named U R Man in November 2008. The first single released was "U R Man". They also promoted their single for the Boys Over Flowers soundtrack, "Nae Meoriga Nabbaseo" (Korean: "내 머리가 나빠서", "Because I'm Stupid"). Due to the success of the drama, the song had a high number of downloads.

2009: Solo collection, second mini album and first Asian tour
They released their official second Japanese album on May 13, 2009 titled All My Love and had a promotional tour in Japan in support of the album. The group also released their Solo Collection, consisting of the individual members' songs.
After concentrating on their individual activities, the group made a comeback and released their second mini album titled Rebirth, with the limited edition being released on October 20, 2009[2][3] and the normal edition on 22 October. The limited special edition album included two posters and a 100 page photo diary. Their comeback song "Love Like This" was well received, winning two Music Bank awards and one Inkigayo Mutizen in November. The group ended promotions for the album on November 29, 2009.
On August 1, 2009, the group started their first Asia tour,[4] visiting Seoul, Tokyo, Taiwan, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

    2010: Third Mini Album
The group held a concert in Thailand, February 2010 before holding their final concert in Seoul to conclude the tour. They were initially going to release a new mini album on May 1, 2010 (which signifies "501"), however the date was later on pushed back because of the need to "add the finishing touches."
On May 22, SS501 was one of many popular groups that performed at the 2010 Dream Concert. And being that Kim Hyun Joong was still recovering from his injuries, they only sang ballad songs, which are Only One Day and Let Me Be The One.
A day after their performance at the Dream Concert, one of their mini-album tracks, "Love Ya" was leaked on the internet. Not long afterwards, the teaser for the comeback track was released. On May 24, 2010, due to the leaks, DSP Media decided to release SS501's new mini-album, Destination online, which contains six tracks in total. Their first win for their title track "Love Ya" was during their second week of promotion in Music Bank, on June 11, 2010. They also took first place the following week. It was announced from Daesung Entertainment on June 18, 2010 that SS501 will end "Love Ya" promotions due to contract expiry with DSP on June 7, 2010.
On June 28, 2010, It was officially announced that the group's leader, Kim Hyun Joong, signed with a new entertainment(KeyEast Entertainment) Bae Yong-joon's agency to reach his goal as an actor . It is unclear if SS501 will stay as a group, or will go on with solo activities.

Although most of their music is composed by various people, the members of SS501 have also contributed to their albums. Kim Hyung Jun and his brother, Kim Ki Bum (U-KISS) composed, under the name "H&B", the songs: "Want It", "The One", "I AM", "Hey G"[5]. Kim Hyung Jun also wrote the lyrics of the song "Obsess" in their Rebirth album. Heo Young Saeng composed his solo song "Is It Love?" and "Until Forever", one of the tracks in SS501's album Destination. Park Jung Min composed the song "Kiss" which is sung by Rainbow, he performed the song at their Persona concert.

Knowing A Man Thru His Sports

Soccer-Another way to Know Hyun Joong?

    Written by Aprilstarr for http://hyunniespexers.wordpress.com

    in Australia

We have seen the most recent flood of soccer pictures and videos provided by Korean media and fans of KHJ. The feared drought did not materialize. I hope I don’t have to say- not yet which I think it doesn’t need to. Let us just co-exist peacefully in this world because we are aiming for the same goal anyway (that is to quench our thirst for infotainment about Hyun Joong ) .

Given such an inundation, I think it is about time we reflect on the role of sport in our lives -particularly in the lives of our men, some men, a man (pardon the seemingly gender insensitive at this point). Sport is often said to have played a prominent role in society – whether first world, third world or any other worlds in -between. Engagement in it is like a rite of passage. Sport allow men to prove their masculinity which is supposedly always under challenge according to Peter West. But at the same time allow them to express their emotions in public -bonding through hugging, crying, laughing. Closeness with and attachment to other males are excusable in a milieu of rule-bound structure of the organization which have set and transparent boundaries at the same time.

Sports also permit men to exhaust themselves where being idle is a no-no. Sports as we know it has been a significant complement to academic achievement or sometimes a substitute. Sport is an achievement by itself/ a separate category even likened by West to conducting wars without bullets.

We know that sports if not carried to extreme is beneficial not only to physical health but also to mental health. It permits for the release of pressure and tension specially for those who must achieve, prove reliability and dependability.

There are many kinds of Sports. A man’s favorite sport supposedly tells you a lot about him as well. Let’s take soccer as an example. Keen in Vision Works tell us a man who is into soccer seriously, not just as an spectator but as a avid player is…

“Tolerant yet obsessive over his grand vision, has patriotic streak that translates into loyalty and strong desire to reproduce. Fortunately, unlike their sport men do like to use their hands in physical intimacy.”

Can you see Hyun Joong in all of the above? Some of the above? Or none of the above?

There are images in our minds that gets fixed because they are replayed repeatedly…repeatedly …repeatedly. The gallery of images in our minds .

We have soccer in our minds and the images of a player in various live action, not poses, frozen by shots taken by the camera for all time. Hyun Joong came to us as if it was only a second away in the past tense thanks to those who have taken the photographs -who have the sharp exacting eyes to shoot the memorable moments.

Many of us were not there-I was not there when Hyun Joong played soccer with his teammates and against the opponent. But the pictures delivered to us made us occupy the best seats in the house. Then we were there…I can almost hear the screams of spectators, and my heart would have stopped beating for a second watching Hyun Joong make his calculated moves out of split-second decisions. Run here, run there, the feet almost not touching grounds. Did he turn into an angel whose wings were attached to his heels instead? How come he could be up in the air as if it was an easy thing to do?

Kick here, kick up there-Hyun Joong showed his flexibility, strength of upper and lower body, doing short sprints, all these in appropriate timing. If only I was there…then I would have screamed with the rest. I would have been on my feet giving him the applause he so deserved.

The camera captured his emotions, his persona-engaged in his world of sport-forgetting the other world he inhabited before. He was truly immersed that what we now see is no longer the Hyun Joong that played Jihoo, Shillang, Jitjoong guy or Baek Seung Jo. I did not see traces of his being leader of SS501, either. He had cast them all aside. He had become Hyun Joong Soccer Player Number 9 .

Hyun Joong a complete athlete, a skilled athlete, oblivious to his surroundings remained focused to the game and how their team played. His facial expressions and his body language spoke soccer. His verbal communication to his teammates is understood within the context of the game .

Then there were the images of unguarded times when Hyun Joong was carefree and in touched with his inner child, liberated and happy to be whatever he wants to be .

Playing soccer, we saw a natural Hyun Joong, no makeup, perspirations and all, everything in his manly glory for the game. The camera also gave us a natural Hyun Joong momentarily exhausted, pausing to recharge hands on the hips , assessing the situation and then readied to resume attacking once again in the field. These images are now embedded in our heads. Can we reconcile them with his other images when he returns to his other world?

Oh, what a difference a game made to our minds .

  • Singing Solo

    Written by Aprilstar for http://hyunniespexers.wordpress.com

Kim Hyun Joong sshi, ‘don’t be afraid to be amazing’

Singers past, present, potential and wannabees all have dreamt one time or the other to sing solo. Kim Hyun Joong is no exception to this dream. He knows singing solo is to claim the stage alone, to have the spotlight all to him. The main order of the moment to do for singers like him is to grab the audience’s attention. It must have been nerve wracking for any singer the very first time .Others say, it is nerve wracking all the time to aspire to sing the perfect song , to aspire to leave a lasting impression with the audience .

Kim Hyun Joong has been interviewed many times while still in the dressing room before a performance. Besides being made up and getting dressed, he continues to practice his dancing while humming to himself (actually he does that even in between shootings of commercials and dramas). To someone who is familiar with the concept of multiple intelligence, a person like Hyun Joong will receive high marks for musicality .His music had become second nature and has expressed he cannot choose between singing and acting. He wants to continue doing both, but music will always stay with him. His co-workers say his eyes sparkle when he talks about his music. He tries releasing tension backstage before performance by joking and in case you are wondering why he has or must have a water bottle all the time, singers must drink to prevent dehydration and fainting on the stage. The stage is not an ordinary terrain .You and I, the audience, who sit at the other end watching can only see the overall effect of the performance .The singers and performers in general must endure all the practice sessions, the punishing lights, all the last minute preparation to be able give the perfect show of their lives. Anything can happen while performing. Some experts say it is also alright to make mistakes that showed the performer’s vulnerability as the audiences love them as well. But some happenings bring apprehension to the audience. You must have seen Hyun Joong’s video where he fell twice while performing because of a leg injury. And yet it only distracted him for a few seconds, he came up on his own two feet and continued. Did you also see the video where Hyun Joong was shocked but for a split second when a stage fireworks exploded beside him? Occupational hazard you say, for Hyun Joong, the show just must simply go on.

Effective singers they say must connect to their audience, emotionally. This is why experts advice singers to sing not only with their voice but with their face, in fact, sing with their entire body. It is the total expression of a commanding stage presence. If you were in the 2007 Japan SS501 concert where Hyun Joong performed “Never Again” or at least watched the video footages (if you haven’t seen it, Hyunniespexers blog’s playlist included that number) you would have seen him the totally involved singer, singing the song he loved, emoting, dancing with the appropriate feelings, in control of the voice range he is comfortable with, you know what I’m trying to say. A sad desperate love song must be sung with sorrows .Kim Hyun Joong sang with his disappointment in love in “Never Again”. In an early MV “Black Glasses” he sung in a duet another emotional love song and went on to perform it before a live audience.

Happy songs are for singers to lift you with joy; they are playful and are enthusiastic. They may add a gimmick or two like an outrageous costume or even bring stage props. They may rearrange the songs with adlibs to take you in, or pause to let you participate in community singing of a favorite and well known song. Hyun joong is no stranger to that scenario as he and the other members of SS501 in their Asian concerts of late typically ended each one with playful water splashing, prancing around the stage, enjoying relaxed moment with their audience-fans. It was the time to let go of the stage persona, to show the real person.

There are multitasking singers –they accompany themselves using the piano, guitar or other musical instrument, dance while singing, talk, some even do acrobatics. You know that Hyun Joong dances very well, plays the guitar and the piano. He showed that skill in the reality show “We Got Married” and in earlier shows. He has not only developed fondness for it but mastered the dance music genre itself. There were many videos showing him practice with gusto and later do it so well on the stage. Of course he was not alone; the audience was always there to applaud him, entertained by him and had a good time together.

There are singers, but some better than others and recognized for their extraordinary talent. Have you ever watched auditions and talent search shows and listened to what the juror say they were looking for? They always look for the singer’s affinity with the song, so that the song and the singer becomes one –as if the song was created for the singer .Or could it be the song waited for the singer to interpret it? Hyun Joong‘s solo songs while he was actively performing with his boy band fit his image, his voice of breathy and mid –high vocals, even his disposition. His latest solo song, if you haven’t heard yet the acoustic version of “One More Time “then listen to it now. The barely audible musical accompaniment allows you to enjoy very clearly his beautiful and warm singing voice matched to that slow-beat ballad. Whoever gave him that song or other solo song he had sung must know his caliber very well, or Hyun Joong might have chosen those songs for himself.

Singing means interpreting the song. We have many interpretations of a song . Singers who understand their uniqueness in approaching songs are well loved and remembered. You don’t even have to see their faces, their voices and their rendition will tell you who they are. That is why we have the word version in our vocabulary. People acclaim the version of the singer. Many who have listened to Hyun Joong’s version of “Creep” agree his version is very good . I say his is the best version .As reader of this article I grant you entitlement to my opinion.

Singers are awarded for their singing whether for the theater, movies, television series –all “legitimate” venues .Has anybody been awarded for busking? Maybe not, but some known singing stars started there. Do you remember Hyun joong as Jihoo who went busking to earn money in Macao? Even if it was not shooting for Boys Over flowers, with a handsome, well dressed singer (he wore a pink blazer there), in a voice so full of confidence singing “Because I am Stupid” would you not stop , listen and give money, too ? If I was there in the crowd, I would definitely even ask for his autograph.

Kim Hyun Joong, has declared in several interviews his intent to sing solo as part of his to-do list for 2011. Yes, its Kim Hyun Joong, the singer, wants to sing solo, to do his dance music and release an album no less. Historically, being a member of the SS501 boy band, he opens up the song and his voice dominates in the chorus. Who would not recognize his voice when it is like the honey that binds all of their five voices together? It cannot be denied he had also been given solo songs to perform as part of the group’s repertoire.

Besides performing his solo numbers in concerts and fan meetings his songs became part of the Original Sound Track of Boys Over Flowers in the 2008 drama where he was Yoon Jihoo the second lead character. In 2010 in his latest drama ,Playful Kiss ,the Korean version of anime and manga turned drama ,he starred in as leading man Seung Jo and sang “One More Time “as part of its Original Sound Track . His latest solo, Hohoemi was done for the Smile Charity Show in Japan last December .He sang it with children in that show.

Those of us who followed his career path know his first love was playing the bass. But it was a career in bass playing nipped in the bud so to speak by his talent management company then. Instead, he was told to sing and dance. The SS501 dance instructor even noted in an interview, that Hyun Joong had 3 months training just to master the basic steps as trainee. But whatever he lacked in dancing skills at first was compensated by his stage presence .But when he finally acquired the necessary skills his teacher considered him the best dancer .Hyun Joong ‘s singing and dancing had become inseparable from that time on .

Five years and several months since debut time with his band SS501 in 2005 Hyun Joong had claimed many stages. But the solo to top all his singing solo was his “Please Be Nice To Me “complete with crotch grabbing steps and fantastic attires . That song had become more famous with his jitjoong and reinforced the hotness image for him. SS501 concert goers always look forward to Hyun Joong ‘s jitjoong where he bares his upper torso.

I cannot blame them when they get disappointed when he does not do it. Fancams uploaded in Youtube of that number will let you see how the audience reacted, wildly screaming at the top of their lungs, while waving their green lights.

In December of 2009, he did a song dance number, Rainism for DK, a soft drink being sold in South Korea. A relatively difficult number to do with his dancers, Rainism without Hyun Joong baring a single patch of skin has received enthusiastic and approving response in internet blogs. Just like “Never Again” solo number, there seemed to be no repeat performance for Rainism .

Hyun Joong had also done rapping by himself, and sang Korean and Western songs in several radio and television shows .MC’s of variety shows who had become fond of him always ask him to sing impromptu.

Looking back, it appears that Hyun Joong has had enough exposure, immersion and experience as a multitasking performer in the singing –dancing field and certainly not a newcomer .In spite of his track record there are others not thoroughly convinced of his capabilities citing that among the members of the band he has the weakest voice. That claim lacks validity. As the singers have different range in their singing voice not all songs are created the same way either. Singing coaches say a singer to be successful must find his voice range and the song that fit that range. And then the rest of other attributes of a successful singer follows. Singing is more than talent and skills: it is the singer’s mastery of what he is presenting and establishing rapport with the audience. Successful singers are known to project that elusive stage presence.

Kim Hyun Joong has the audience figuratively in his palms when he performs. He has commandeered the stage from the very first day he stood up there. His stage presence is extraordinary and has made the stage his natural playground. From his already recorded solo songs it is very apparent that his voice range had matched what he sang. The invitation he received to sing the theme song for the Asian Sports Meet held at Guangzhou, China last year is an international recognition and affirmation of his singing talent and drawing power. The acknowledgement was repeated when he sang the theme song, “Hohoemi” for the Japan Charity Event.

Kim Hyun Joong has revealed he has chosen five songs from about a hundred songs given him for a solo album to be released this year. He has further intimated that he had started practicing for that as well. I think Hyun Joong has received all the good signs from heaven. He has nowhere else to go but use his gifts and share it with us. As Kim Hyun Joong pursues his solo dance singing career path there is only one thing to say to him, If I may quote Andy Irwin, ‘DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE AMAZING.’

(This article does not claim to be an exhaustive discussion of the singing career of Kim Hyun Joong but just a representative sampling of his musicality. Thanks to Andy Irwin for his famous quotation. I think he had Hyun Joong in mind. -Aprilstar)
  • Of Dreams, Anxiety and Personal Aspirations

    By Aprilstarr for htttp://hyunniespexers.wordpress.com

Why do we dream ? An eternal question with multiple answers spanning from the ancient times to the present. Dreams had launched wars that became victory or even resulted to a shameful disastrous end.

Dreams were sweet, hopeful, depicted scenery that were not even humanely possible .

We see our dearly departed in our dreams or those about to leave us .

But dreams can be extensions of our mundane tasks not yet fulfilled thus full of anxious expectations …if only we have the oracles of Delphi, use the tea leaves of China or use divination from liver conducted by priests of times past …then dreams may explain, may give us clarifications of things troubling us. But then Sigmund Freud suggested for us to look deeper into our subconscious and what lies there .

Hyun Joong had his dream and only him will actually know what that dream meant. Apparently he knew that it was his anxiet, now he shared with his public and anyone who cares. He shared his dream to his fans, he now considered his friends or people close to him. In turn we listened , we empathized and gave him our collective attention . We understood what he is going through-if we can only give him a hug, envelop him in a warm embrace that can say it all : It’s going to be alright Kid ! We will all be there for you .

He had time and time again laid bare his personal aspirations-and we cheered him on to his finish line. We knew he could make it-his dedication, passion, work ethic, the self discipline, the sacrifices all cleared the way . There is no turning back for Hyun Joong, he is all gung ho. Even in his dreams he knew what to do , it may have been a struggle , but so what ,that what makes victory even more meaningful and worth striving for.

Unlike other dreams ,of just faraway ,misty clouds of uncertainties-Hyun Joong’s dream prepare him to his physical realities and he knows what to do about them .
  • Why We Buy Korean Celebrity Merchandise

    By meteor2010 at 2011-05-21

    By : Aprilstar for http://hyunniespexers.wordpress.com

    Seattle, Washington

In the 90’s Paco Underhill used to lord it over the analysis of retail consumer behavior –detailing what shoppers buy, how they buy, when they buy and who are buying until the advent of online marketing . But what this guru has actually studied ethnographically is buying in general, not the specific niche that has now occupied retailing though was not paid serious attention then. I am referring to selling and buying of celebrity merchandise. This was a Hollywood monopoly for a long time –ask any Las Vegas visitor who had inevitably encountered Elvis in mugs, commemorative plates, TShirts , caps and assorted knick knacks . Now, you don’t even have to travel and leave your house just to get into the mood of showing your affection to your favorite celebrities. They are now available online to global buyers. How convenient. While they are usually harmless looking touristic stuff, they could be funny, outrageous and ridiculous.

Similar phenomenon has happened to fans’ adoration of Korean celebrities such as pop idols and the actors and actresses. When fans buy celebrity products it usually is called emotional purchases .It used to be fans had to go to the Mecca of shopping in this case Korea, in Myeongdong, Seoul for memorabilia, souvenirs and collectible items . Now with the concert circuits and active promotion of films and dramas in Asia, celebrity merchandises also travel and made available during the shows.

Online marketing has also boosted sales of these merchandises ranging from posters to photo books playing cards, mugs , jewelry made popular by these celebrities in their shows ,mouse pads ,light sticks, calendars, umbrella ,socks, towels ,pens ,tumblers ,DVD’s and many others . They are not cheap considering they still needed to be shipped entailing additional expense. There are legitimate online sites selling them like YesAsia and EBay. Blogs and Forums, Facebook and Twitter have become exchange centers of sorts in buying and selling of these celebrity items.

Korean celebrities and their fame have provided incentive for an underground manufacturing and marketing to thrive. On a trip one ordinary day to a local wet market in one Asian country, posters and pictures of the F4 of BOF fame were observed being peddled next to vegetables, laundry brushes and detergent , rubber slippers and pots and pans .Fake DVD’s or pirated copies also proliferate in sidewalks, malls, markets and any place where there is at least a wall to display the wares. It was of course tempting to manufacture fake items because the merchandise is now an industry. The originals are expensive and many times difficult to obtain, thus the imitation serve the purpose of bringing the price down to very affordable level. Imitation allows the ordinary person to enjoy what is usually available only to those with disposable income. Entrepreneurship always is creative.

Creating the Demand, Providing the Supply

One can say business definitely exist because there is a demand for the products. A quick look at the internet yield there are fans bemoaning the “scarcity” and where can buy these celebrity products. These fans always start their query with “I want …”. Are the products essentials of daily living? Of course not . And yet they are sought after, thus one can say demand has been created. Demand came as the byproduct of the global spread of the Kpop mania and Hallyu phenomenon and the broadening of the fanbase of the celebrities. The celebrities had become a very real public fascination with the accessibility of their work such as dramas, movies, videos uploaded in YouTube and viewing online sites that have mushroomed in the internet. It looks like the demand for the product is directly proportional to the popularity of the celebrity or how visible the celebrity is at the moment. When these celebrities visit another country through their concerts, Kpop conventions, fan meets, promotion of their works, fans who want to remember their positive experiences with them and resulting good mood buy memorabilia and souvenir items.

Social media, according to Viral Blog (March 2010) citing Chadwick Bailey’s study, has affected buying behavior .Blogs, a type of social media dedicated to specific celebrities have also contributed to the continuing interest of the fans to buy these products. In these blogs, items of interest are featured and are even made open for ordering at discounted prices to their registered members. Membership in fan clubs and organizations that span across several countries have encouraged buying keepsakes as way of bonding together.

Retail stores have opened up in many countries that are said to have sourced their goods through frequent trips of owners to Korea. Or they could have stocked up from underground sources that are typically cheaper in cost. Business establishments regularly have collectible promo products and giveaways like mugs, tumblers, calendars, posters with the celebrity image stamped on them. Hotsun and Face Shop do this to increase sales and patronage. Even a credit card with Hyun Joong’s face can perhaps encourage more spending with it .

Buying at auction of the celebrity’s (whether living or already dead) clothes , accessories and other memorabilia is the high end way of owning them . In the United States, these memorabilia command high prices as they had been part of the star’s estate or some objects could be said already part of entertainment history. In Korea, stars themselves donate and sometimes participate in auctioning their clothes and other materials where the proceeds go to charity. At the recent Smile Project held in Japan Kim Hyun Joong donated for auctioning the attire he wore when he sang the theme song for the 2010 Asian Games Event held in Guangzhow ,China. Hyun Joong’s two standees fetched high prices in an auction held in Singapore last December when he visited as the new spokesperson of Face Shop . In another charity auction, Hyun Joong also parted ways with a beloved hat. The most thrilling part is making a used personal item of the star yours, that is, if you can afford it.

The celebrity also directly encourage fans to buy . When celebrity use the products while attending media events, in their projects ,when they model and pose with them ,they have created the fans’ desire to also own them for personal use or to make them part of their collection. Imagine the special feeling and thrill using the ring just like what Hyun Joong joong wore in a show , or that of Kim Bum’s earrings when he went to a fanmeet. Or wearing the jackets that looked so well on Yoon Eun Hye. Or travel light and be stylist using Hyun Joong‘s bag in the airport. The glitter and glamour might just rub in and stay. Becoming fashionistas like the stars are now possible.

Who is being catered to by this market?

Obviously, this market is dedicated to the fans who have formed a subculture of their own. They are the ones who share similar attitudes, values, appreciation and have attached special meanings to these objects. Attendance at concerts and other public events reveal their demographics to be overwhelmingly female and of school age. It means they are still dependent on their parents for their spending money which can place some limitations on their spending habits. On the other hand, there are female fans who are married, have children , single and professionals ,house managers , older adults who are already retired thus have access to income of their own . There are male fans but they remain in the minority. While many products are bought in cash , online products are bought using credit cards and PayPal. It is of interest to know to what extent this generated business have made a dent on the overall economy. Or are they delegated and lumped under “others”?

This market will remain vibrant and dynamic for so long as the fans are interested in the stars. Not to worry, print and online marketing will see to it the interest are sustained. Advertisements placed in well trafficked areas where people movers such as buses and subways are found and in other public spaces will reinforce the messages. Happy are the fans who can have the stars as part of their day . Wakeup and drink morning coffee in a mug with Hyun Joong or Rain . Dry the wet face with a towel with the favorite KPop idol in it . Brave the sudden pour of rain with the SS501 umbrella. Go to the interview appointment using the calendar and planner with Hyun Joong smiling and encouraging to go fighting ! Wear Jandi’s star necklace and may be meet one’s Jun Pyo around the corner .In an instant, why , you’d become the celebrity !

It used to be that fans only see their favorite celebrity’s personal effects in museums and in Halls of Fame and Fortune. But why wait, till they are placed in glass cabinets in some faraway rooms, in some distant land when you can enjoy them here and now ?
