Shannon Ashley Garcia Mitchell or better known of her stage name "Shay Mitchell" (born April 10, 1987) is a Canadian actress and model. She stars in the ABC Family original series, Pretty Little Liars as Emily Fields.
Early Life
Born to a Filipino mother and Irish/Scottish father, Mitchell is a native of Toronto, Ontario. Even as a young child, Mitchell was interested in the performing arts, declaring to her parents that she would pursue such a career. Mitchell began dance lessons at the age of five, and she and several of her classmates toured the city to compete with a variety of other dance schools
At the age of 10, Mitchell's family moved west to Vancouver, British Columbia. Within a year of their arrival, an international modeling agency held an open casting call for teen and pre-teen girls who were vying for representation. Mitchell was one of the girls selected.
Career
By her late teens, Mitchell had successfully modeled for a variety of companies in cities as varied as Bangkok, Hong Kong and Barcelona. Wanting to focus on her true passion, Mitchell returned to Toronto and began to study acting with great focus and determination. Her hard work paid off and, after signing with her first theatrical agency, Mitchell appeared in the hit series Degrassi: The Next Generation and booked several national commercials. Mitchell also landed a recurring role in the Disney XD series Aaron Stone," is featured in the music video for recording artist Sean Paul's hit song "Hold My Hand" and appeared in the Global series Rookie Blue. Emily is dedicated. Dedicated to swimming, to her parents, and to her unrequited lovessome of them girl crushes. Shes also a little superstitious, which helps her cling to the hope that . . . if the next car that drives by is red, Ali is still alive!
Emilys strawberry blond hair is tinted green from the chlorine in the pool, and her dorky Swim Chick t-shirts are the height of Fields fashion. Ali definitely questioned Ems style, but she knew Emily would pounce on anyone who threatened her. Thats why Ali nicknamed her Killer. (Too bad it wasnt enough, Em.)

Exclusive! Nia Peeples Discusses Whos Best for Emily on Pretty Little Liars
Pam Fields (Nia Peeples) gets bashed a lot on Pretty Little Liars, but can you blame her for being a protective parent? Sure, shes made mistakes, but she's come a long way. Nia explains that her character always looks out for Emily (Shay Mitchell) and will continue to next season. In Part 1 of our exclusive interview, Nia defends Pam and reveals which girl she thinks is best for Emily. Maybe Em should take her advice they say mothers know best!
Wetpaint: We know your character has hired a realtor to help sell your house in Rosewood. Can you give us any more clues about this plan to move to Texas? Is there anything Emily can do to change your mind?
Nia Peeples: Ah ha! The thing to remember is that Emily is really important to Rosewood, but shes much more important to her family. Emilys friends are very important and Pam understands that and respects that, but at a certain point, you have to weigh how important your family is as well. In the overall scheme of things, Emily hasnt been with her father for years and its starting to wear on her family. So I think the decision for her family to be together for a year is really the best choice that Pam can make.
You sent Maya away to juvie, but youve also stood up for Emily and finally accepted her. How have fans responded to your shift in attitude?
The fans love that Pam has started to accept Emily. When I was having issues with Emily and caught her on her bed with Maya [Bianca Lawson], they were really non-supportive and very vocal, but I had to point out to them, you have to look at it from a parents perspective. I would never let my teenage daughter feel that its OK if she was in her bedroom with her boyfriend or potential dating partner behind closed doors when Im not there. It really comes down to how quickly you want your children to learn about that and to focus on that. Its not something you can turn your back on, but you want your children to be able to grow into it at a good pace.
Youve started to accept Emily and her sexuality. Will we see more and more of that next season?
Yeah, I think what we were able to see in the first season was that Pam really loves Emily and Pam is having to come to grips with her own beliefs. Pam is a good person, she has her hang-ups for sure, but she really loves her family and is willing to explore it. So well be exploring more of what that means.
We know youve interacted with Maya, but will you be interacting with Emilys other love interests Paige and Samara?
As much as she lets me know about them! Its a funny thing being a recurring character on the show because Im gone more than Im there. A lot of times as an actor, Ill show up on set and read the script and think, Hmm, what has gone on between today and the last time I was on the show and how much does Pam know? So its always really interesting and a precarious position as an actor to pick and choose those things because I dont really know where my character is going.
Who do you personally think is best for Emily Maya, Paige, or Samara?
I dont think Maya is the best choice. Im saying that as a mom. Nor is Paige. I think Samara, but theres still so much you dont know. You dont know someone until you lived with them for three years--thats my rule of thumb! And when youre exploring your own sexuality at this stage in your life, theres a lot more discovery. So Emilys exploration of herself is even more complicated, and as a mom, Id say slow down and take your time, especially because youre questioning your own sexuality.0 -
