Just days after the Philippines boosted its reputation as a pageant powerhouse by being honored the Big 4 Performer of the Year, another Filipina added to the country’s rich harvest of international beauty titles in 2015 on New Year’s Eve.

Mutya ng Pilipinas-Asia Pacific International Leren Mae Bautista was crowned Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International Thursday night at the Putrajaya Marriott Hotel and Spa Grand Ballroom in Malaysia.

In besting 52 other candidates, the 22-year old Laguna native became the third Filipina to win the crown after Sherylle Santarin and Raquel Uy won it in 1996 and 1999, respectively.

Established in 1993 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International is one of two “homegrown” international pageant franchises owned and operated by Malaysia’s D’ Touch International, the other being Miss Tourism International. Both pageants have attracted contestants from over 50 countries around the world.

With her win, Leren also joins the ranks of fellow international titlists Pia Wurztbach (Miss Universe) Angelia Ong (Miss Earth), Ann Lorraine Colis (Miss Globe), Cindy Madumma (Miss Scuba International) and transgender Trixie Maristela (Miss International Queen) in what has turned out to be a banner year for the Philippines in the international pageant circuit.

In addition to these crown holders, other noteworthy pageant performances included runner-up finishes by Christi Lynn McGarry (1st runner-up and Multimedia Award in Miss Intercontinental) and Parul Shah (3rd runner-up in Miss Grand International).

Janicel Lubina and Hillarie Parungao also finished in the Top 10 in Miss International and Miss World, respectively while Rogelie Catacutan finished in the Top 20 in Miss Supranational.

Pinay hailed as Mrs. Grandma Universe 2016
by Ruel Mendoza posted on January 23, 2016

Pinay contestant Babylyn Decena-Newfield won the Mrs. Grandma Universe 2016 title,
besting more than 50 candidates in the coronation pageant held last January 21
in Sofia, Bulgaria. She also bagged the Best in National Costume Award.

Aniya, “Being one [grandma] is not all about taking good care of your grandchildren but also to show the other people and the universe that I can still be competitive in every goal and objectives that I will set in my life, whether personal or professionally.”

Pia immortalized on two commemorative stamps

When Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach returns (after a recent brief visit to shoot a commercial) on Friday, April 15, to crown her Bb. Pilipinas-Universe successor (to be chosen with three other Binibinis on Sunday, April 17, at the Big Dome), she will be welcomed by two commemorative stamps issued by the Philippine Postal Corporation (PPC).

According to avid stamp-collector Celso de Guzman Caparas (Funfare’s “other beauty expert”), “Issued were some 101,000 pieces of regular stamps costing P15 and 5,000 pieces of souvenir sheets at P40 each featuring Pia’s official Miss Universe photo. First Day Covers (FDCs) with special designs will also be released at P26 each for stamps and P54 each for souvenir sheets.”

The PPC formally announced on April 7 that the stamps and souvenir sheets will be released when Pia arrives. The PPC hopes that Pia will have time for the launch.

The Pia stamps join Celso’s prized collection that includes other beauties/celebrities featured on stamps: 1969 Miss Universe Gloria Diaz and 1973 Miss Universe Margie Moran (both issued on May 5, 1994), 2013 Miss World Megan Young (issued on Feb. 24, 2014) and Manny Pacquiao (issued on May 30, 2008 and April 20, 2015)…plus other Miss World winners, popes, Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth and other royalty members, 1958 Miss Universe Luz Marina Zuluaga of Colombia (three stamps issued on June 26, 1959), 1977 Miss Universe Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad and Tobago (three stamps and a souvenir sheet issued on Aug. 2, 1978), 1998 Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam of Trinidad and Tobago (four stamps and a souvenir sheet issued on May 3, 1999) and 1999 Miss Universe Mpule Keneilwe Kwelagobe of Botswana (five stamps and a souvenir sheet issued on Dec. 1, 1999).

Other Misses Universe honored on stamps by their countries were Georgina Rizk of Lebanon (1971) and Paulina Vega Dieppa of Colombia (2014). A special postmark was issued when the Philippines first hosted the Miss Universe pageant in 1974. Host countries that issued commemorative stamps included Mexico (1978), South Korea (1980) and Cyprus (1999).

    A big kudos to Pia!

Hers is a phenomenal achievement or a great feat at a major international beauty contest/pageant (Miss Universe) in the Miss or single/unmarried category. It's a great honor too for the Philippines and for the Filipino people.

With its counterpart, in the Mrs. or married category, the Philippines has not captured yet the Mrs. Universe Crown & Title.

So far, the closest was in 2009 when Mrs. Camilla Kim-Galvez placed 2nd Runner-up in the Mrs. Universe Pageant that was held in Riga, Latvia.

(NOTE: To watch the part of the video showing her placement at the 2009 Mrs. Universe Finals (Election & Coronation), kindly point your cursor @ 11 minutes & 15 seconds then play the video.)

It's interesting to mention the win of Engr. Muriel Moral-Pandi at the 2010 Mrs Universe Contest for through her the Philippines won the first-ever-awarded 'Intelligence Title' in the Universe!

People of the Universe, ladies and gentlemen, you know many are asking us why MRS. UNIVERSE is called or known as THE MOTHER OF ALL PAGEANTS?

Well, MRS. UNIVERSE was dubbed as THE MOTHER OF ALL PAGEANTS for the valid reasons of: it, being the most significant and relevant pageant of its kind, for being a parent-mother in the family/society, for its seniority to ALL Miss & Mister pageants, and for the real meaning of the word UNIVERSE and for the UNIVERSAL SCOPE of its Crown & Title of MRS. UNIVERSE. :)
