Diane Desierto is First Filipina Yale JCD Grad!

(from UP Carillon)

UP Economics and Law professor Diane Desierto will be the first Filipina to be conferred the Doctor of Laws (J.C.D) by Yale University. Her dissertation entitled “Necessity and National Emergency Clauses: A Study on Sovereignty in Treaty Interpretation” was accomplished in approximately 1.5 years, long before her dissertation deadline, which is 2014. The JSD Committee unanimously found her draft submitted in August 2010 to be sufficient for the doctorate degree, and will officially confer the honour in June of this year.

Similarly, UP College of Arts and Letters Asst. Prof. and Theater Arts alumnus S. Anril Pineda Tiatco won the New Scholars Prize from the International Federation for Theater Research (France) for his research on ‘Cosmopolitanism and the Philippine Komedya’. The prize will be awarded during the IFTR conference in Osaka, Japan on 7-12 August 2011.

Congrats! Sana dumami pa ang tulad nyo!!!!!

remarkable and medyo unbelievable hehehe. minsan sa isang century lang mangyayari eto for a pinay. nasa ICJ (international court of justice) in the Netherlands ata sya now as the first SouthEast Asian to be appointed as a Clerk of Court. she was part of the winning UP Law team in the 2004 Jean Pictet Moot Court Competition in Europe.
  • Summa ***** Laude din ata sya sa Econ in 2000.
  • Is she the daughter of ex-Ombudsman Aniano Desierto?

She was also part of the team who gave UP Diliman its first win in the All-Asian Intervarsity Debating Championships in 2001. The latter is now known as the United Asian Debating Championships.

    Congratulations to Ms. Desierto!

By the way, Yale confers a J.S.D., not a J.C.D. (Juris Canonici Doctor, or doctor of CANON law).

Also, did the author mean she's the first FEMALE? Because if it's just Filipinos getting JSDs from Yale, Desierto is not the first. And if it's Filipinas getting JSDs (or equivalent) from Ivy-league law schools in general, she's still not the first.

Re-posting the ambiguous statement and using capitalized letters will neither remove the ambiguity nor answer my question. :)

yes. tatlo silang magkapatid. ang kuya (Dante) is a lawyer din from UP Law. tapos may kapaid si Diane na PhD grad sa UK who is now a professor at UP School of Econ. All three of them took their undergrads at UPSE.

Diane graduated as ***** laude and class salutatorian from UP Law in 2004. She did not place in the Bar Exams. The class valedictorian, Joseph Perez, placed 8th. Si January Sanchez (ranked third sa class nila) ang Bar Topnotcher that year!
