Why Can't Our Celebrities and Filipino Entertainment Go International Even in Asia?

Sometimes I'm wondering if this is part of the Western mentality that was bestowed upon us that a singer/actor/artist can only be considered "international" if it's a Hollywood achievement. Success is only equivalent when you can penetrate mainstream in the US.

But haven't they thought that before thinking of this, they should penetrate the Asian market first? You see Taiwanese, Korean and Japanese celebrities go on "Asian tours" and their dramas are bought by tv stations other than their countries. And they very well enjoy a stable fanbase in other countries, enough not to make them one-hit wonders. Our neighboring Southeast Asians from Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia have their own delegates to the three countries (Japan, Korea, Taiwan/HK) that are strong in the entertainment sector. (example, Nichkhun from Korean band 2PM is pure Thai, Nicholas Teo who is big in Taiwan is actually Malaysian etc)

It is also noticed that our neighboring Asian countries trade dramas and artists with each other. Multinational collaborations happen more often compared to the Philippines. Like their celebrities always find an easy link with one another and the only ones missing are Pinoy celebrities which sometimes make me feel we're left out of the circulation.

In comparison, I can't help but feel that our dramas and celebrities do have something to offer, especially recent dramas by ABS-CBN which evokes the right sense of balance with the charms of the cast and the storyline, though they fail at the execution at times. It would be nice to hear a homegrown Filipino making it big in Taiwan/HK, Japan or Korea or our celebrities arranging a fanmeet/promoting their dramas in Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam etc. I think Charice, Christian Bautista and Jericho Rosales are special cases because Charice's "rediscovery" was an exceptional situation and Christian & Jericho were not able to begin some kind of trend and sustain the entrance of Filipino artists abroad. I also find it weird considering the Philippine showbiz industry is one of the oldest to a point it has its own sense of culture but we aren't able to influence our neighboring Asian countries. :(

I think it's because of exclusivity - just about every marketable artist's rights are "owned" by the major networks - let's take gerald anderson for example - let's say some outfit from singapore spots him and approaches his manager and offers a project - but isn't gerald anderson's manager an affiliate or a subsidiary of abscbn? so now abscbn is in the picture [excuse the pun] and naturally from its business standpoint would demand perks [production credits etc] and that can stall negotiations and maybe even be a deal breaker

artists in the pi have to become smarter and start looking at the process from their own business standpoint - I think most of them look at themselves merely as "talents" and not business associates

The BRICK WALLS STILL EXIST IN HOLLYWOOD FOR ASIAN ACTORS which is extremely difficult to break despite skills and abilities! The sad fact is, Asian actors are limited to playing Asian roles, and there aren’t that many Asian roles to go around either. Chances are, when you see Asians on screen, they are either bit players (thus, they’re just a “number,” to fill the space for those “random Asian characters”) or you see the same actors (Chow Yun-Fat? John Cho? Ming Na?). Once in a while, an Asian actor may break out and play a character who was not conceived or written for Asians.. Sandra Oh’s character in Grey’s Anatomy, for example. Or John Cho’s in Flashforward. And these characters and actors make an impression long before they start performing the roles because of the rarity of such characters.

A cousin of mine was able to land some movie and tv parts .
Her screen name is Marie Matiko but her real name is Marie Gulmatico.
Her agent made her change her last name to sound Japanese and a little easier to remember.
She appeared in the movie The Corruptor opposite Chow Yun Fat but her scenes were edited . She did land the second lead in The Art of War opposite Wesley Snipes.
    Her career waned after that.
She was born and grew up in California.
It's tough for Asians to make it in Hollywood. For every Bruce Lee, there are hundreds of aspiring Asians.

Cesar Montano tried to make it here but who'd hire him?
Ruffa G. was laughable when she claimed she had an agent here.
So what? That doesn't guarantee you get parts. She didn't .

    1. Because Filipinos are not as well known as other Asians. When the West thinks of Asia it automatically thinks of the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans, yung dilaw ang balat at singkit ang mata. Hindi nila tayo ma-classify because we are so racially diverse at pa-lie low lang tayo. Some of us can be mistaken for East Asians, West Asians/Middle Easterners, Hispanics or even Caucasians and at the same time we don't fulfill the stereotypes they associate with each race.

    2. Because we are not as aggressive as other Asians sa pagpromote at pagrelease ng mga pelikula, TV shows, albums etc. We only produce shows and movies that will rate in our own vicinity, will top our own box offices, etc. In other words hindi natin iniisip ang gusto ng mga ibang bansa unlike Korea with their dramas and music and Hong Kong with their movies; sinisigurado nila pareho na magugustuhan maski ng mga Westerners ang mga gawa nila.

    3. Exclusive contracts. Enough said.

As long as Hollywood still sees Asians/Filipinos as exotic or foreign, the brick walls persist.

pag pinoy bakya pag foreign class

pag di magaling magenglish bobo pag magaling magenglish class

Kinda agree.

Happy na ang local fans sa "kilig moments" kasi they see the love team. Kahit hindi na-establish yung kilig within the storyline. Yung Asian Market wouldn't care about the inherent kilig of the loveteams Enchong/Erich or Kim/Gerald or JLC/Angel kasi di nila ito kilala. But if na-establish sa storyline kung bakit nagmamahalan yung CHARACTERS (not the artists), kikiligin pa rin sila. Kasi kinikilig sila sa characters and not the actors.

Tapos yung plots din kasi weird. Take the case of "Kung Tayo'y Magkaka-kidney...." Dapat medyo universal kasi yung theme, with a dash of local context lang para mas exportable.

Pero may silver lining naman. Sikat si Christian Bautista sa Indonesia, at na-franchise na yung Pangako sa Iyo sa Tanzania, and Tayong Dalawa in Singapore, I think.

I blame it to exclusive contracts as well.

But little by little we are conquering the Asian audience. In countries like Malaysia, China, Indonesia and other countries in the Far East, people there embraced shows like Pangako Sa Iyo, Lobo and other TV series. These shows even have fanbases as far as Africa. Suffice to say, I believe our shows have the potential to be a blockbuster not only in Asia but in other continents as well. In the Third World regions that is.

Nevertheless, North America and Europe =/= World. I think many here have the wrong impression that international standards only consist of the ones made by Westerners. I am already satisfied to know that many TV series in our country are being recognized in Latin America, Africa and other Asian countries. If by chance, they hit the top spot in North America and Europe, that will surely be a great bonus.

    hehehe.
