i'm a soon to be mom and always asking from friends na matagal ng mommy.. i have a friend/officemate na nagsabi na kin na pag new born, dapat talaga dr. edwards ang gamitin. maganda raw talaga although medyo may kamahalan ng konte compared sa ordinary distilled water.

Lord have mercy. Distilled water is distilled water. Don't be fooled by the hype.
  • HI weemom, wondermom,

Ako gumamit ako ng Dr Edwards nung naospital ang 1 month old baby ko then because of amoebiasis. Wrong handling kasi of water when I was washing her mouth.

Wala namang mawawala if you try it out. Pero eventually, after about 3-4 months, binigyan ko rin siya ng regular mineral water.

    hey brother,watch your steps now!
you don't want to do anymore damage here and listen to me,war in afghanistan is peanuts compare to the angst of mothers here.just sisterly advise.

on topic,i have friend who used mineral water all 1st year of her son's life and canadian water system is top class and i that find over the top.sa pinas, parang i would use something else in the first few weeks kasi di reliable ang water tap dyan.
  • I had my first child last year and from then till now, we have been using Dr. Edwards. During my son's first five months, we were using the one with the white cap (no flouride). But when his first tooth started to come out, we switched to Dr. Edwards Flouride Plus (the one with blue cap). It's quite early to tell yet if Dr. Edwards has good benefits on his gums and teeth. What I can share now is that using Dr. Edwards is very convenient kasi direcho na buhos sa bottle. No need to sterilize na. Also, my son hasn't experienced any water-related sickness.
  • Medyo masakit lang nga sa bulsa. Here in Davao, 39.50 per bottle
(700ml.) Kahit by box kami bumili, hindi binibigay at wholesale price.

weemall: if you feel that it is necessary to buy that brand of water, you know what's best for your baby.

Honestly, I think it's just marketing hype and quite overpriced and I liken it to those RTF Baby formula.

river517: Isn't it bad to give children under 4 flouride water? Your kid might get dental fluorosis.

weemall, ang explanation sa akin ng pediatrician is that Dr. Edwards is sterilized water. Ang kaibahan nito is that not all distilled water is sterilized kaya nung nasa Pinas kami, we used Dr. Edwards.

We used Dr. Edwards minimally for my son for the first 8 months or so... minimally, meaning, he was breastfed exclusively so I really only needed the Dr. Edwards water for cleaning his gums and tongue and only needed to give him some when we introduced solids to him na. Then we switched to Wilkins na for him till he was a year old and then switched to the mineral drinking water we drink after he turned one.

Ate first of all, I'm sorry.

Second, I'm replying to a post. Esp. the second post that said "if the water was more expensive, it's better for your child"---of course I didn't know the original meant sterile water, I'm replying to the previous one with 'distilled' which is TRUE Ate, don't believe the hype all distilled water are the same. You know that water cost 1000% more than it's original price when bottled.

Now, of course let's get off that horse, according to experts the likelihood of children being sick from encephalitis and other infection is really small. According to CDC the statistic of a child dying from infection from water source was one (in that year this article was written). Despite this however (SAFETY rather than likelihood) the American Academy of Pediatrics suggest sterile water for the first two months. The article is from the NY Times, printed last spring.

Another thing no one ever mentioned is: since babies suckle on their mothers' teats, are their breasts and breast-milk EVER sterile?

The only difference that I may note, between the article and the reality is: tap water and water sources in the Philippines and the US are different. I guess it's right to for them to buy sterile water. :glee:

being that breastmilk is a bodily fluid, of course it is possible for pathogens to be carried through it

    ^Well that's where I was getting to:

If children drink more from the breast and more of breast milk in his diet than water, and since that source of nutrients ISN'T sterile, then why emphasize so much of sterility of water?

Also another thing with sterile water is handling. Say you didn't sterilize or clean the bottle with which you feed your kiddo, all that sterility isn't going to do him no good.

Just my opinion, of course I'm not a mother, what do I know?

you have to realized that in the Philippines, that's how it supposed to be.Same thing with the milk they use, mas MAHAL na GATAS, MAS MATALINO ,MAS HEALTHY,MAS MAGIGING MATANGKAD, and all the other promises that will make their baby more superior than those who fed with generic milk. Yung ibang OB may style pa, they will prescribed the most expensive milk/vitamins and what-not, na sa botika lang nila mabibili and you can't blame the parents specially the first timer, they always want the BEST for their baby.*okay*

Because the common water-borne pathogens that we try to avoid in the Philippines (amoeba, cholera, typhoid) are not transmitted through breast milk. So no, it is not comparable.
Yan naman ang most concern sa tubig sa Pilipinas.

I used Dr Edward's to my baby when she was a newborn to 2 months only. She hated the taste of it. Ok sya i mix with milk but water alone has an unusual savor. She's now using Absolute distilled drinking water.*okay*

    hello..

i never introduced that to my baby.. :) although the pediatrician suggested that..

kasi pag sinimulan ko sya sa mga distilled water mamumulubi ako(single parent lang po ako).. and feeling ko mas magiging sensitive ang tummy nya..

so far maayos namang lumaki anak ko.. hehehe

(but if i am blessed with high-paying job by then, malamang tinry ko din yan).. ;)
