Guardians Brotherhood endorses Manny Villar for President

NP solidifies ground support;focuses on vote delivery

Press Release
April 27, 2010

With barely two weeks to go before Election Day, the Nacionalista Party (NP) said it is focusing more on solidifying its ground support and vote delivery to ensure victory for its standard-bearer Manny Villar and his slate.

“While we acknowledge the veracity of pre-election polls by various survey firms, we believe that surveys do not make a candidate win. The war has now shifted from media battles to capturing battlegrounds that will deliver the actual votes. This is the real deal, and we are prepared to go for the kill,” NP spokesman and senatorial bet Gilbert Remulla said.

A pre-election survey conducted from April16-19 by BusinessWorld-Social Weather Stations (BW-SWS) showed Villar trailing his closest rival Benigno Aquino III by 12 percentage points.

The nationwide poll, conducted last week and three weeks before the May 10 elections, saw minimal change on the numbers of both Villar and Aquino. Compared to the BW-SWS survey conducted last March 19-22, Villar had 26 percent while Aquino garnered 38 percent. Six percent of the respondents were classified as "undecided/others."

As in two earlier surveys, the respondents were 2,400 registered voters, divided into random samples nationwide. The survey had a ±2 margin of error.

“A lot of things have taken place since the survey was conducted. NP believes that Aquino’s lead has gone back to the single-digit level with two weeks before the national elections.

“We recognize that it is an uphill battle but a lot has happened since last week and a lot will still happen. We have suffered continued attacks by both contenders and we are wondering why the concentration is on us, the number two, and not on the number one.

“Despite all the attacks, we are still very much in the running and that our supporters’ resolve has only strengthened further," Remulla said.

“We are consolidating our troops and response from the ground has been overwhelming since the start of the campaign. This is it. With two weeks to go before the D-Day, we are going all out to victory,” the NP bet said.

NP has a wide cluster of representation, support, and endorsement from all concerned sectors that no other party can boast of.

Villar’s sectoral support, conservatively estimated to deliver 15 million votes, include endorsements from the following: Bayan Muna, Anak-Pawis, Gabriela, Kabataan, COURAGE (government employees), Migrante (OFWs), ACT (teachers), Katribu, Suara Bangsamoro, and Associate Labor Unions/TUCP. Villar is also being supported by the Magdalo Group, Guardians Brotherhood, and various religious groups.

To date, NP has fortified its political support-base in the following areas: “solid North” composed of Regions 1, 2, and the Cordilleras; Mindanao, Bohol-Cebu-Capiz in the Visayas, and other areas where NP has become the dominant political party.

In Metro Manila, NP counts on the support of Manila Vice-Mayor Isko Moreno and Asenso Manileno, Pasig City Mayor Robert "Bobby" Eusebio and Vice-Mayor Rosalio "Yoyong" Martirez and their slate, 100 barangay officials from Kalookan, and the Gatchalians of Valenzuela.

SARIAYA, Quezon, Philippines – An official of the Guardians International Inc., a nationwide fraternal brotherhood organization, has declared the group’s support for the presidential candidacy of the Lakas-Kampi’s Gilberto Teodoro Jr.

“The decision has been reached by the Guardians national council during its recent meeting,” Guardians International head Nestor Gualberto, former chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), announced to over 6,000 members gathered at the Sentrong Pamilihan ng Produktong Agrikultura ng Quezon Foundation Inc. here Sunday afternoon. The group celebrated the "Guardians Day."

The announcement was greeted with wild applause and the raising of clenched fists by members, who came from different parts of the Calabarzon (Cavite-Laguna-Batrangas-Rizal-Quezon) region.

Teodoro, who was the guest speaker during the event, stood up from his seat on top of the makeshift stage and also raised a clenched fist in acknowledgement and appreciation of the declaration and display of support.

The Guardians, composed of civilians, government employees, active and retired police and military, claims a membership of more than one million in different parts of the country.

Its founders were former key officers of Philippine Guardian Brotherhood Inc. associated with Senator Gregorio Honasan. Political differences triggered the split and the eventual formation of the new group.

In Frbruary, the Honasan-led Guardians declared support for the candidacy of Nacionalista Party standard bearer and Senator Manny Villar.

In his speech, Teodoro, the former secretary of national defense, recalled how the organization supported the government in its decision to take a hard line stance against the Muslim bandit groups in the south and how it also assisted the state in providing help to the people during times of calamities.

“Our solidarity and partnership have already come a long way. We will continue to work together for the betterment of the Filipino people,” he told the assembly.

Earlier in the day in Tayabas City, Teodoro met with the local grassroots machinery of Lakas-Kampi-CMD composed of village officials, health workers and party coordinators.

“These grassroots Army will penetrate every corner of this town just to deliver the wining votes for you,” Tayabas Mayor Faustino Silang told Teodoro before the jam-packed assembly held at the “Silungang Bayan” covered court at the back of City Hall.

“In traffic lights, green means go, while yellow (referring to campaign color of LP candidate Senator Benigno Aquino III) means the motorist will still have to wait. So it’s a go for all of us. Let us bring Gibo to Malacañang!” Silang added.

Teodoro, in his speech, tossed a challenge to the local party members.

“If you don’t believe that I’m the most qualified and the best of all presidential candidates, do not vote for me. But if you believe that I’m the man for the job, it is your obligation as responsible citizens of this country to campaign and vote for me,” Teodoro told the crowd, who responded with thunderous applause.

The Lakas-Kampi-CMD standard bearer also met with candidates from Quezon’s first district, who came from as far as the island towns in northern Quezon facing Pacific Ocean.

The meeting – organized by Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez, Lakas-Kampi-CMD deputy secretary general and former Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera, now running for a congressional seat in the district – was also attended by administration senatorial candidates, Silvestre Bello III, Raul Lambino and Rey Langit.

Showbiz star Jolo Revilla pitched in for his father, Senator Bong Revilla, while a teenage daughter of Ramon Guico spoke in his behalf.

Vice Presidential candidate Edu Manzano was not present in the campaign sortie.

“This (election) is war. We will take no prisoners. We will defeat them all,” Suarez, himself a re-electionist in the Bondoc Peninsula area, told his party colleagues.

Local administration candidates led by gubernatorial candidate David Suarez, all vowed to campaign hard for the victory of Teodoro, Manzano and the entire Green Team senatorial slate.

Although lagging in major surveys, Teodoro has expressed optimism that he could still surpass his political opponents and finally emerge as the winner in the coming May elections.

“Like in a baccarat card game, I only have four but I can still ask for another deal while the other players who already have six can no longer ask for more,” he said with a mischievous laugh.
