TV5's 5-STAR SPECIALS starring Ms. MARICEL SORIANO
in Showbiz - TV

TV5 will soon premiere its weekly anthology show titled 5-Star Specials and network executives have chosen the Diamond Star to topbill its first few episodes.
Maricel Soriano lends her undeniable star power and showcases her acting prowess through her portrayal of different characters that can induce tears in one episode and elicit chuckles in the next.
On its pilot episode (March 22) directed by Soxie Topacio, Maricel stars in a comedy special where she plays the role of a balikbayan. She returns to the Philippines to get her daughter upon learning that her gay ex-husband is already dead. Now together with her boyfriend (played by Carlos Morales), Maricel meets her ex-husband's gay lover (played by Roderick Paulate) and engages in a funny dispute over the silliest of things.
The next episode (March 29) will feature Maricel in a horror-themed story together with child actor Nash Aguas. It will be directed by Ryan Carlos.
The remaining episodes will be megged by Joyce Bernal, Joel Lamangan and Eric Quizon.
Maricel recalls her working experience with Soxie Topacio and her good friend Roderick Paulate.
"Of course, nakatrabaho ko na sila lahat pero ang treatment na ginawa namin, it's going to be a lot different. It's been a long time na hindi kami nakagawa ng project together."
PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) asked the Diamond Star which genre she enjoys the most.
Perci Intalan, head of Creative and Entertainment, told the press, "We are very proud and honored that Ms. Maricel accepted our invitation to be part of the new TV5. Although, to make it clear, we are not under any illusions na sa amin lang siya."
At this point, Maricel quipped, "Pwede rin 'yon [maging exclusive]! Pwede nyo akong i-adopt." [laughs]
Perci continued by saying, "When we offered it, we were fortunate that she accepted it. We're still conceptualizing a movie project."
TV5 network executives are also conceptualizing a sitcom for the veteran actress. 5-Star Specials will air on TV5 every Monday starting March 22 at 8 p.m.

IN A LOT of ways, moving to TV5 was a homecoming of sorts for actress Maricel Soriano.
For her first project with the revitalized network, she returns to a format she popularized in ABS-CBN in the 1990s.
Maricel is headlining the TV5 Star Drama Specials with five episodes to be megged by five leading directors. (After Maricel, TV5 will tap other award-winning actors to top-bill the series.)
I feel blessed that TV5 gave me this opportunity Thankful na kinupkup nila ako [that they adopted me] and excited to act in the drama-anthology format again, she told Inquirer. I did Maricel Drama for 10 years and I missed doing it.
The Maricel Soriano Drama Special ran from 1988 to 1997 on ABS-CBN.
Varied roles
For the TV5 show, which will run from the end of March to April, she is set to tackle a variety of roles in just as varied genres.
For the first episode (Dalawa ang Nanay Ko), which reunites her with fellow Regal star Roderick Paulate, she does comedy, under the direction of Soxie Topacio.
The second episode is horror, under director Rahyan Carlos who also handled her last Kapamilya series Florinda. Shes doing romance, drama and comedy, too, under directors Joyce Bernal, Eric Quizon, and Joel Lamangan.
Biggest challenge for her is to give justice to each role.
She explained that not one genre is easier compared to the others. Theyre all difficult and require dedication, respect and commitment.
She follows a simple process in preparing for a role: I read and study the script.
Skipping meals
She is also known to skip meals prior to a big scene.
Shes intense as an actress, said Perla Bautista who plays Maricels mom in the horror episode entitled Batang Putik.
Interestingly, that episodes director, Rahyan Carlos, is the grandson of Luciano Chaning Carlos who megged Maricels biggest hits for Regal Films in the 1980s: Inday Bote, Inday, Inday sa Balitaw, Super Inday and the Golden Bibe and Horsey, Horsey: Tigidig-Tigidig.
After Florinda, Im looking forward to work with Rahyan again. Im proud of him, said Maricel.
A blast
It was also a blast reuniting with Roderick, her partner in another Chaning Carlos comedy, Gorio en Tekla.
Its great to work with him again, especially now that weve matured as actors, she said.
Manager Malou Choa-Fagar hopes that Maricels planned sitcom with Roderick will push through on TV5.
Said Maricel: The people of TV5 feel for you. I hope they will not change even if they achieve success.
Reynang-Reyna Sa TV5!

I feel like a star.
They make me feel like a star talaga.
Ha! Ha! Ha! tawa ni Marya.
Walang problema sa akin. Basta ganito kaganda ang ginagawa nila for me at sa ibang artista, aba eh di ituluy-tuloy na natin. Puwede akong exclusive sa kanila! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Ive been in the business for 39 years.
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Its written all over my face! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Its not always about the money, ang importante ay kunsaan ka masayang nagtatrabaho.
I dont burn bridges.
I love it at sana nga ay marami pa kaming gawin, nakangiting sambit na lang ni Marya.

A very bubbly Maricel Soriano faced the entertainment media at the press conference of TV5's newest drama anthology called 5 Star Special last March 11, at Mario's Restaurant on Tomas Morato, Quezon City.
The Diamond Star, who is known to her showbiz friends as Maria, openly talked about her decision to make a project with the revitalized TV5. Although she's much identified with ABS-CBN, she said that it's sometimes good to welcome "change" in one's life.
As her fans know well enough, Maricel had been a Kapamilya since the early '80s. Her own drama anthology called The Maricel Drama Special aired in ABS-CBN for almost a decade.
She also did a number of TV shows in the same network. These included sitcoms like Kaya Ni Mister, Kaya Rin Ni Misis (1997), Bida Si Mister, Bida Si Misis (2000), Mary D Potter (2001), and John en Shirley (2006). She was also seen portraying the lead character in television series such as Vietnam Rose (2005) and Florinda (2009).
Now that she's doing the first five episodes of 5 Star Special in TV5, Maricel says she has learned to accept such changes in life.
Unlike some celebrities who jumped from one network to another, Maricel said that her case is different because she did not burn bridges when she accepted TV5's offer.
"I did not say goodbye," she smiled. "Wala naman 'tong goodbye, di ba? Ano lang 'to, in the meantime, di ba?
"I'M AN ARTISTA." Maricel agreed to appear on TV5 because it offered her a venue that would showcase her versatility in acting.
"This is a special special. Ginagawa natin ito [dati], pero ang treatment and approach na gagawin natin and execution, is going to be a lot different," she described.
The 45-year-old actress said TV5's offer was just timely because, "Kailangan, by this time, gusto kong gumawa ng isang trabaho na alam mong tratrabahuhin mo pero mukhang madali palagi dahil mayroon tayong dedikasyon, respeto, at pagmamahal sa ginagawa namin.
Maricel underscored the network's encouragement while taping for this project.
I'm an artista!'" she gushed.
"PUWEDE AKO KAHIT SAAN." During the media conference, Maricel and TV5's Creative and Entertainment head Perci Intalan didn't answer directly if she would be doing other shows with the network.
Maricel just told the media, "Depende, gugulatin na lang namin kayo. Ito muna, isa-isa para may suspense naman!"
When asked what kind of show she prefers, she replied, "Alam mo naman ako, fight anywhere ako, puwede ako kahit saan."
She gave a similar answer about other roles she wants to do in the future.
TREATING HER JOB AS A BLESSING. From child actress to multi-awarded Diamond Star, Maricel has proven that she can handle different genrescomedy, drama, suspense and horror.
She shared her outlook as a professional actress:
She also recalled the instances when she had to separate her own feelings from her job.
Then, she reminded everyone, "Life is so short, di ba?
LETTING GO OF EXCESS BAGGAGE. If other stars experienced complications in crossing over from one network, she was happy that hers was a breeze.
She said, "I consider everything as a blessing. Smooth sailing lahat.
Maria attributes her unfading sophisticated look to her positive attitude.
"I'm very at peace with myself," she said.
She even managed to joke about burdens in life, "Naku, mahal 'yan, magbabayad tayo diyan.
Then, seriously she told the media, "I let go of everything. I have learned to accept kung ano ang dumating or darating. Kailangan buong ningning kong tanggapin masakit man o masaya.
In her 39 years in showbiz, Maricel has definitely made her mark. Although she's known as The Diamond Star, she doesn't think about it too much. She said, "It's not the label, e. I want the people to know the real me. This is me talaga. Everything will fade.

A very happy and pleasant-looking Maricel Soriano met with the press last week in connection with her brand-new drama series on TV5 titled Star 5 Specials. The Diamond Star was in her best element, gamely answering all the questions thrown at her except the one related to politics, simply saying she doesnt want to talk about it.
Maricel is going back to work after doing Florinda for ABS-CBN, which ended some months ago.
She had been inactive for a while so the offer from TV5 is, indeed, very timely. This makes the Diamond Star one of the premier stars of TV5, which is making a strong bid to become a network to reckon with when it makes its big launch this month.
Star 5 Specials is headlined by Maricel, who will get the chance to work with different directors. For its initial episode, Star 5 Specials will feature Maricel with good friend Roderick Paulate.
I really like the special treatment that TV5 is giving me, said the Diamond Star during the presscon held at Marios Restaurant located at Tomas Morato Avenue in Quezon City. She said if TV5 would be willing to take her under its wings permanently, she would gladly accept it.
Maricel said she didnt have any problem with regards to her transfer from the Kapamilya network to TV5. We had a good parting of ways. After all, I have been with the Kapamilya network for a good number of years, but I guess there comes a time when you see the need for change. Kung bukas ang puso mo sa pagtanggap nang pagbabago, hindi ito magiging mahirap, said the actress.
She said that she and the Kapamilya network had a long relationship and while she may have crossed over to another network, it doesnt mean that shes closing her doors on the possibility of working again with the Kapamilya network in the future.
The actress also gives the assurance that the viewers will see a different kind of drama series in Star 5 Specials. Shes excited at the forthcoming episodes and shes looking forward to working with the different directors like Ryan Carlos, Joyce Bernal, Joel Lamangan and Eric Quizon that TV5 had lined up for her.
While she declined to give details, Maricel said that aside from the drama series that shes doing for TV5, the network is cooking up another project for her. It could be a movie or a project that would feature her alongside comedy king Dolphy.
In the first episode of her Star 5 Specials, she will be directed by Soxie Topacio. Maricel stars in a comedy special where she plays a balikbayan who comes home to get her child back when she learns that her former partner (who happened to be gay) has died. She comes home and meets her ex-husbands gay lover played by Roderick. This sets off bedlam and misadventures.
