You dont need any review center to pass the UPCAT. If you're for it, nothing can stop you. Though I wanted to attend reviews for added confidence, I wasnt able to. Come exam day, it was raining cats and dogs in our province. I was wet all over when i took the exam. Tapos nage-LBM pa ako sa nerbiyos. Imagine the precious time i lost in the restroom. By God's grace, I made it anyhow. Ahhhh, how time flies. It's almost 2 decades ago. Nothing beats my UP experience 'til this day.
  • I enrolled in SCRC's review program back in 2007 (?). It really helped me because na-review ko talaga yung dapat ma-review.

But then again, review lang iyon ng mga tinuro throughout high school. What matters more is what you learned during high school.
And also, if you're applying for a quota/double quota program, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt if you'll enroll in a review center. :)

review centers won't guarantee you that you'll pass if you enrol in them.

    andami kong kasabay nag-review center...UNFORTUNATELY

Pagkatapos kong mag-take ng exam alam ko kung pasado ako or hindi based on what I feel.

    Kudos to you anyway.

I took the UPCAT just this year. I don't expect to pass it but definitely it's easier than what I expected. I reviewed independently using my high school notes and didn't attend any review center or a study group whatsoever. But I'm proud to say that I was able to answer about 60% of the test, but then again, for emphasis, I don't expect to pass  So this proves that enrolling in a review center does not guarantee you to pass. It's all about what you have learned during your high school years and your long-term knowledge. *okay*

Nakakalungkot lang isipin ngayon na ang mga state U sa Pilipinas ay malapit nang madominate ng rich kids (no offense to them, but this pertains to the evolving concept of money = smarts and education) nagiging 3:2 na ang ratio with 3 as the real smart students and 2 as the product of expensively rigorous schools and review centers, alam ko na nagbabayad din naman ang mga mayayaman ng tuition according dun sa income ng magulang nila, pero, come to think of it, kunwari, sa course na kinuha nila may 10 slots, tapos the last slot ay pinag-agawan na ng galing sa expensively rigorous school at yung matalino talaga pero mahirap, pero, ang naging agwat ng points nila ay 1 point lang galing sa UPCAT and yung kakulangan na yun ay naituro dun sa rich kid but the rich kid himself ay hindi nya alam kung bakit ganun ang sagot, basta naituro lang, I guess makakapasok ang rich kid and leaving the real smart with broken dreams behind, and the second option of the poor one eh mag-aral nalang sa lesser than UP, nawala yung privelege nyang mag-aral sa university na ginawa talaga para sa mahirap, I'm not being hypocritical here because we're also victims of the poverty here in the Philippines, simula pagkapanganak ko, wala na tatay ko dito para mangibang bansa, siguro kung susumahin mga araw na kasama ko sya sa buong buhay ko, ang total lang ay 2 years, at ngayon sumama na nanay ko sa abroad kase kulang ang pangsustento samin dito

    anyway, back to the topic,
Nag try din akong mag review center, Academic Gateway, maganda din, pero, sa totoo lang, kung ang school nyo nung HS eh hindi advance or hindi nasakop lahat ng average na lesson ng mga advanced schools gaya ng Ateneo, Xavier, Miriams, Philippine Sci, eh medyo mahihirapan kang sumabay (General to all review centers), kase, fast-phased ang lesson - kaya nga tinawag na "Review" center, kumbaga kung hindi naturo sa inyo yun, irereview kayo nun kahit di mo alam yun, pero infairness naman sa UPCAT at DLSUCET , they test the real knowledge of the students by increasing more on the critical thinking test and reducing the advanced level questions, sa UPCAT talagang kelangan eh matindi common sense mo at logic in all parts of the test, at sa DLSUCET may part dun na tinetest nila yung logic at sa every questions dun ay may halong common sense lang at critical thinking, ACET naman eh - In my honest opinion, no offense to Blue Eagles pero medyo biased kase puro advanced talaga ang tanong na halatang winiweed out lang nila yung mga advanced schools gaya ng Ateneo, Xavier, Poveda, Miriams at para masabi nalang na hindi biased - Phil Sci. and other Sci schools,

overall, nung bakasyon nag-aral ako 1 hour per day or less at yun yung mas naging effective, focus on the basics at sa Biology, aralin mo yung Addison-Wesley Biology (Bible yan ng HS Bio) yung review centers ay bonus nalang at honestly, di naman sya masyadong nakadagdag sa pagsagot ko ng questions pero it boosts confidence lalo sa mga medyo kinakabahan, tapos kung nacover nyo lahat yung lessons nung advanced HS, magbebenefit ka sa Review Centers, pero sabi nga, mag focus ka talaga sa Basics at sa Critical Thinking kase alam nilang yung ibang magtetest ay hindi nacover yung adv. lessons and to be fair, they ask basic but deadly questions :bop:

How exactly do you define a good UPCAT review center? I've worked for several years sa iba ibang review centers and let me tell you, mahirap i define to..

halimbawa.. do you base an UPCAT review center's effectiveness sa passing rate niya?

if yes, the problem with this paradigm is the fact that walang unbiased 3rd party na nagbibilang and nag momonitor ng passing rates ng review centers.. basically, they can claim any passing rate and you'll never know if its the truth [I should know, naririnig ko yung usapan sa office dati on what passing rate yung ibibigay sa mga nag iinquire na students and parents..:D]

But review centers post their passers lists right? Tanong ko, who verifies these passers lists? May nagconfirm ba na lahat na the names na nakalista even reviewed sa center na yun? or did they even take the upcat? [isa isa mong i coconfirm yung names sa list nyan to say its accurate.] Or if they took and passed the UPCAT, tama ba yung year?

Second question is, what about the non passers? To get the passing rate, you would obviously divide the number of passers over the total number of reviewees sa isang review center. What DENOMINATOR do they use? may nag confirm ba ng total number of reviewees nila? let's say tama nga, 100 reviewees passed the UPCAT and you confirmed this.. how will you count the total number of reviewees na gagamitin mo as denominator? para mapataas nila passing rate nila, they just have to make the denominator smaller right?:D

You'll see the discrepancy sa figures na to:

    * most UPCAT review centers will claim na ang passing rate nila is 50% and higher..

    * yet the metro manila passing rate is only about 12-15%..

saan napunta yung 35+%?? take note, most upcat review centers are in manila wala sa provinces and most UPCAT takers in metro manila review before taking the UPCAT.. dapat significantly higher ang passing rate ng metro manila kung ganun and yet mas mataas pa passing rate sa province which is more or less 20%!

mahaba na masyado sagot ko..: D you can read my blog post about this for more details.^^

    http://academic-clinic.com/2009/04/practical-guide-to-choosing-your-upcat-review-center/

ps. marami rin UPCAT related blogs sa site, i would appreciate kung some of you guys here could help me out sa pagsagot sa mga tanong ng students dun. thanks!^^
  • The review center industry is one big scam. They're just capitalizing on students like you who would pay thousands for a fictional advantage in the UPCAT.

You can't outsmart the UP admission center just by taking a few hours of lectures regarding the UPCAT. They know how to get the brightest students.

I have taken more than ten entrance exams in my life. I've seen students review their eyebrows off then miserably fail and students who didn't flip a single page yet passed the entrance exams.

These things are out of your control. Kung mautak ka, chances are papasa ka. Pag medyo mahina ka, don't put too much hope in it. Ganyan talaga.

For me, ang best lang na matutulong sayo ng review center is FOCUS Yung lessons naman, natutunan mo na yun, eh. Pero yung fact na pinaparealize sayo ng review center na this is really it, di mo basta basta makukuha yun sa sarili mo. Lalo na dun sa mga refresher courses, gaganahan ka mag-aral days before the exam. MAGPRIRIORITIZE KA Kasi natututunan mo magfocus.

Biglang nag-cram the day before the UPCAT. Luckily, nakapasa. Pero kung gusto mo talaga, enroll in a well-established review center.
  • therealdaryltherealdaryl The real PExer

It really helped a lot, considering na yung teachers ay graduates ng UP, and yung iba professor pa dun. But then again, it's usually subjective kasi depende pa rin yun sa'yo. What I mean to say is, kahit gaano ka-mahal, ka-bongga, or ka-galing yung nagtuturo/review center... passing is always up to you.

Hindi talaga ako naniniwala dun sa nagsasabi ng "Pass the UPCAT the sure way!" Hello, the only sure way to pass the UPCAT is when they leak the answers. =))) @-)

Pero dahil nga hindi ako nagtake ng pre-test nung review center (nagkasakit ako for two weeks that time) at di rin naman ako nag abalang magretake nung test, nag pang 90+ ako out of the 150ish students na nagreview sa kanila kasama na yung mga students from their Naga branch.

Yung review center eh nag offer pa ng one on one consultation with their people na graduates ng UP. They told me na in order to pass the UPCAT daw, mas maganda kung magtetake pa ako nung supplementary review sessions nila kasi nga ang baba daw ng ranking ko. :D

Pinalad ako na makapasa sa UPCAT. At di na rin ako nagbother i-inform yung review center about it. Wala lang. Bahala na sila. Hehehe.

    Very True :D
And in my honest opinion ulit, ang pinakamagandang review center siguro eh yung kayang punan yung mga hindi naituro sa inyo nung High School, lalo ngayon saamin, laging hindi natatapos yung mga lessons sa bawat year, nung Geometry nga namin nung 3rd year eh hindi manlang namin natouch yung circles kaya nadedo kami nung UPCAT sa circle questions, eh sa review centers lagi namang pasadahan lang na inaassume nila na alam mo na yan kaya mabilisan lang tayo*peace*

WEAK ang mga nagre-review center! :))
    joke.

I myself did not go a review center and i passed the UPCAT. Review centers DOES boost your confidence IMHO, but in the end it all comes to your ability since the UPCAT is really unpredictable.

i know how some people have this general notion that review centers are for "bobo" or "slow" people but like for me, i just wanted to be sure. there are certain things that you won't be able to remember. and of course, hindi naman exact na yung review mo that's the exam. but it still helped for me. i went to Ahead Tutorial sa katipunan, they do test based stuff, so you get to feel how it is taking a timed exam. it was like practice. it's not really exclusively for knowledge but also for dealing with the stress on the actual exam. it helped me relax talaga. and guys, the topic is "Best review center for the UPCAT" so let's stick to that. :)

points on why i Ahead was good for me.
    - it had the sections for each part of the UPCAT
    - the time for each section was almost the same
    - they have personalized programs depending on whether you're taking the UPCAT or ACET so you get the feel of the exam
    - this one's minor, but i trust the fact that they're in the campus area and most of their teachers are from UP so they know what they're saying, they give tips pa nga eh. :D

Anyway it's up to you guys!
