MMFF 2009: JUAN -- Starring Dolphy, Gloria Romero, Jeffrey Quizon & Heart Evangelista

JuanBTS2-29-1.jpg

Heart plays the young Gloria Romero in 'Juan'

Heart Evangelista had actually two entries in this year’s MMFF. "But I heard that she has only a few days of shooting in ‘Juan’ (which Dolphy topbills and is produced by the comedy king’s RVQ Productions)," said Mother Lily, "guest role lang siya sa pelikula."

Dolor Guevarra, who manages the showbiz career of Eric Quizon, Dolphy’s son who is at the helm of "Juan," supported Mother Lily’s statement. "Ang alam ko rin Heart will play the young Gloria Romero, who plays naman the wife of Dolphy."

The young Dolphy is played by Epy Quizon, another son of Dolphy. "Si Vandolph naman ang gaganap na Eddie Garcia (who is Dolphy’s co-star) when Eddie ws still bata pa."

Is this the same movie which Dolphy was supposed to make with Willie Revillame?

"But only because he hosts ‘Wowowee,’ the TV program where Dolphy and Eddie supposedly meet.

"Actually, I have no idea yet how the story of the movie will end.

"Basta sabi lang ni Eric, maganda ito."

***

From Dolor, we also learned that Heart’s role as the young Gloria Romero was first offered to Kristine Hermosa, who, right away, agreed to do it.

"Ang alam ko rin, ipinagpaalam siya ng RVQ Productions kina Mr. M (Johnny Manahan) and Mariols (Alberto), heads of Star Magic, talent and discovery arm of ABS-CBN.

"Pinayagan naman daw si Kristine, kaya nag report na siya for measurements for the costume which she will be using.

"A few days before the shooting, nabalitaan ko na lang from Eric that she backed out.

"Why? I asked Eric.

"He refused to elaborate."

WHAT’s in a movie title? In the case of the 2009 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry "Nobody, Nobody But … Juan" – a lot!

The film features an all-star cast headed by the Comedy King himself, Dolphy, as senior citizen Juan who lives in a nursing home in the United States. The nursing home is managed by a couple played by Eric Quizon and G Toengi. Juan’s funny caregivers are Eugene Domingo and Ricci Chan. Essaying key roles are Gloria Romero, Eddie Garcia, Pokwang, Epy Quizon, Vandolph and Heart Evangelista. In a special role is "Wowowee" host Willie Revillame who links Juan to his loved ones in the Philippines.

In one of Eric’s trips to the US, he met with a friend who suggested making a film inspired by the Oscar best picture "Slumdog Millionare" and starring Eric’s dad Dolphy. The actor-director immediately got excited. "I loved ‘Slumdog Millionaire’," remarks Eric. "I loved the fact that it’s about a character’s affinity to a TV show. Filipinos are also like that. We are rabid followers of TV programs."

During the brainstorming, Eric had no other show in mind to be at the center of the film. "Hands down, it was ‘Wowowee’," says Eric, "I wanted something that was close to the hearts of Pinoys here and abroad."

As for the title, Eric suggested the name "Juan" to screenwriter Bibeth Orteza who found it apt. Eric believes that the title "Juan" works on many levels. "It does not only refer to the name of the character that my dad plays in the movie. Juan is the most common first name for a Filipino. Juan means ‘everyman’ which is just perfect because my dad is dubbed as the cinema icon for the average Juan. Juan also sounds like one, meaning No. 1. My dad is often described as the number one comedian in the land."

Eric also says, "We’re happy that our film is part of the MMFF, an event that holds a special place in my career." Actually a number of Eric’s major films were made for the MMFF, the historical comedy drama, "Markova Comfort Gay," the family epic "Mano Po," comedies "So Happy Together," "Crying Ladies" and "Juan Tamad" (these last two gave Eric acting trophies).

When principal photography commenced, the film was simply called "Juan." But when the Wondergirls’ "Nobody, Nobody" became a hit, the quickwitted Dolphy suggested adding "Nobody, Nobody" to the title. And that’s how our movie became ‘Nobody, Nobody But … Juan!" says Eric.

A catchy title, a brilliant premise, the number one comedian. It’s easy to see why "Nobody, Nobody But … Juan!" is set to be No. 1 when it opens on December 25.

  • Dolphy nasa nursing home sa Amerika
(Pilipino Star Ngayon) Updated November 04, 2009 12:00 AM

    showbis2.jpg

(Emma Bernardo)

i think MP6 will be number 1. this will be top 3 for sure.

tapos itong juan at i love you goodbye. my bet for number one is juan at i love you goodbye.. pero dahil star cinema ang i love you goodbye.. mukhang ito ang papatok ng husto.

i am really doubting that I Love You Goodbye will get the top spot.... i think its between Mano Po and Juan... with MP on top...
Vic needs a break from MMFF... his movies have been so formulaic for a while now... and based on his dwindling box office returns seems like the moviegoers are getting tired of his antics. but he will still be in the top 3 for sure.

my top 5... (without Pacman or Panday)

    1. Mano Po 6
    2. Juan
    3. Tatay Kong Aswang
    4. I Love You Goodbye
    5. Shake Rattle and Roll
  • Nobody, nobody... but Dolphy!

NOBODY, nobody… does it better than Dolphy!
Official entry ng King of Comedy sa darating na filmfest ang pelikulang Nobody, Nobody But… Juan.
Star-studded ang Nobody, Nobody But… Juan.

  • The “Juan” and only Dolphy!

There is Juan in every Filipino as there is only one King of Philippine Comedy, Dolphy!

He is back in “Nobody, nobody but...Juan!” or “Juan” for short, the much-awaited official entry to the 2009 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) which opens nationwide this Christmas, December 25. Directed by Dolphy’s son Eric Quizon from a screenplay by Bibeth Orteza and produced by Kaizz Ventures in partnership with RVQ Productions, “Juan” tells the story of US-based Juan (Dolphy), who lives in a senior home hooked on watching “Wowowee.”

“Juan” is Dolphy’s biggest project yet after the release of his bestselling bio-movie “Hindi Ko Ito Narating Mag-Isa” and the phenomenal worldwide concert tour held in connection with the said bio. This heartwarming love story and family-centered comedy movie is also Dolphy’s first after more than a year. Previously, he was in 2008’s “Dobol Trobol” with ace comedian Vic Sotto.

The MMFF is “home” to many Dolphy hits, some of which are the acclaimed comedy-drama “Markova Comfort Gay” (for which he won a Best Actor Award at the 2001 Brussels International Film Festival), the environmental comedy “Home Along da Riber,” the family picture “Wanted Perfect Father,” the magical fantasy “Espadang Patpat (for which Dolphy received an MMFF Best Actor trophy), the epic “Once Upon A Time” and other wonderful films.

Partially inspired by the Oscar-winning picture “Slumdog Millionaire” wherein a TV show is a major character, it is the top-rating “Wowowee” which becomes a favorite of Juan and his co-residents in the nursing home run by his marriage-troubled son (Eric Quizon) and daughter-in-law (G Toengi).

Juan, however, does not watch the show just for entertainment’s sake. Aside from wanting to connect with the Philippines that he dearly misses, Juan is lonesome for his first love Aida whom he lost touch with during the Japanese Occupation of Manila. “Wowowee” is Juan’s way of coping with homesickness and reliving the beloved past.

This grand love story encompasses the 1940s to the present, taking place between the United States and the Philippines. “Juan” is undoubtedly Dolphy’s biggest and most star-studded Metro Filmfest offering. Only “Juan” was able to assemble the most outstanding comedians in the country. Dolphy teams up inimitable Pokwang & Eugene Domingo plus respected dramatic actors Gloria Romero & Eddie Garcia as the Old Tu, Juan’s partner in the vaudaville duo Juan Tu, who are also known for their comedy prowess.

With a story inspired by the top-rating noontime show “Wowowee,” how can host-funnyman Willie Revillame not be part of it? And he is! Willie is said to be so honored to be in this Dolphy movie that he adjusted his schedule so he could shoot.

When principal photography started, the film was simply called “Juan.” But when the Wondergirls hit “Nobody, Nobody” became the ‘Kanta ng Bayan,’ the quick-witted Dolphy suggested adding “Nobody, nobody…” to the title. “And that’s how our movie became “Nobody, nobody but… Juan!” says Eric.

Heart Evangelista, Vandolf, Jeffrey Quizon, Metring David and Joe Aldeguer complete the cast.

With a catchy title, a heartwarming story and the number one comedian, “Nobody, nobody but...Juan!” must be your first pick when MMFF opens on Christmas!
“Juan” is supported by Samsung, Bench, Mang Inasal and Komeya 3Q Bihon & Sotanghon.

Dolphy, Eddie & Glo: Wonderful combination
    Ronald Constantino

    IT’S WONDERFUL – A great pleasure, a wonderful treat, a rare reunion.

Those thoughts come to mind as comedy king Dolphy, movie queen Gloria Romero, and versatile actor Eddie Garcia co-star in "Nobody, Nobody but… Juan," an entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival.

Imagine three of our greatest stars together in one movie. A triple treat, indeed.

Dolphy plays the title role, Juan, confined at a facility for the aged in Chicago, pining for a lost love Aida (Gloria) and reliving his bodabil days in the ’40s, in tandem with Tu (Eddie). They lost touch then World War II broke out.

Juan is an avid watcher of Willie Revillame’s "Wowowee," where he reconnects with loved ones back in the Philippines.

How "Wowowee" reunites them is the moment supreme of "Juan," full of joy and laughter.

Epy Quizon is the young Dolphy, Vandolph the young Eddie Garcia, and Heart Evangelista the young Gloria Romero.

FILMFEST AWARDS – Some of the finest movies topbilled (separately) by Dolphy, Eddie, and Gloria were shown at the Metro Manila filmfest.

Dolphy’s "Espadang Patpat" gave him the MMFF best actor trophy. Another one, "Markova, merited Dolphy and sons Eric and Epy Quizon the best actor/actress (yes, both categories for all three) at the Brussels International Film Festival.

Eddie’s first (and to date only) Urian was for a filmfest entry, "Deathrow."

Gloria won several best actress awards for "Tanging Yaman" (filmfest, Urian, FAMAS, Academy).

"Juan" is partially inspired by "Slumdog Millionaire," wherein a TV show is the major character, "Wowowee."
