  • Posters unveiled for My Love By My Side

    August 17th, 2009 // by javabeans

Wow. We’ve already heard that Kim Myung-min (Beethoven Virus) would be losing a significant amount of weight as he filmed his latest movie, My Love By My Side [내 사랑 내 곁에], but the end result is even more startling than previously noted.

You can see how gaunt he is in these new posters for the movie; in order to play a convincing Lou Gehrig’s disease patient, he lost more than 20 kilograms over the course of filming, which translates to approximately 44 pounds. And considering that his normal starting weight was around 160 pounds, that makes his final number under a worrying 120 pounds.

We saw Kim Myung-min’s weight-loss and character-building process chronicled to an extent in his MBC documentary (titled Kim Myung-min Was Not There, taken from his ability to shed his own personality entirely when getting into character). The character gradually loses control over his limbs and muscles, in the end only able to express himself through his eyes. Ha Ji-won plays Kim’s love interest, who watches over her husband as he gradually deteriorates.

The film sounds horribly tragic, but these are two pretty great actors who ought to be wonderful to watch together. My Love By My Side will open in theaters on September 24.

However, Kim was not able to personally receive the award as he is currently overseas with his family. Closer to Heaven co-star, Nam Neung-Mi received the award on his behalf.

"Nation" actor Kim Myung Min was honored as the Best Lead Actor at the 46th Daejong Film Awards held on November 6 in Seoul. This is his first major award in the film industry, as well as his first award for his realistic portrayal of Lou Gehrig's disease sufferer, Baek Jong-woo in hit melodrama, Closer to Heaven.

Kim Myung Min was recognized twice as Best New Actor in his debut movie Sorum (2001) where he co-starred with the late multi-awarded actress Jang Jin-young. This was followed by three other movies: Into The Mirror (2003), Return/Wide Awake (2007) and Open City (2008). Unfortunately, he did not gain much distinction in the mentioned movies.

On the contrary, Kim is widely known for his award-winning roles in the small screen. He bagged 6 awards as Maestro Kang Gun Woo in Beethoven Virus (MBC, 2008); 4 awards as Dr. Jang Joon Hyuk in The White Tower (MBC, 2007); 2 awards as gangster Oh Dal Gun in Bad Family (SBS, 2006); and 5 awards when he played the title role in The Immortal Admiral Yi Soon-shin (KBS1, 2004-2005).

Kim was also dubbed as Korea's Christian Bale when he lost a whopping 20 kilo in the course of the three-month filming of Closer to Heaven. Film director Park Jin-pyo praised Kim's performance saying that "by offering the best performance in the movie, Kim Myung Min almost lost his life." Kim is renowned for his dedication to immerse himself into every role he takes.

Top actor Kim Myung Min grabbed two awards at the esteemed 46th Daejong (Golden Bell) Film Awards - also known as Korea's Academy Award - held on November 6 in Seoul. Kim earned the Best Lead Actor and the Netizen's Choice/Popularity Awards for playing the challenging role of Lou Gehrig's disease patient, Baek Jong-woo in the tearjerker box office hit Closer to Heaven.

As Kim was not present to personally receive the awards, Closer to Heaven co-star Nam Neung Mi (Best Supporting Actress nominee) received the awards on his behalf.

In the Netizen's Choice/Popularity Award speech, Nam said, "If Kim Myung Min was here, he would be very happy. As you know, he did his best during filming without any concern for his physical well being. As a result, he got sick due to the rapid weight loss. He is a great actor and I want to give him a standing ovation as a senior actress."

In receiving the Best Lead Actor Award, Nam said, "I feel dizzy for standing here twice tonight. Kim Myung Min is worthy of winning this prize. If he was here, he would have said these words. "Thank you, Director Park Jin-pyo, all staff and crew of Closer to Heaven, and representative Lee You-jin. But the biggest appreciation goes to the audience who watched the movie. God bless you. Thank you!""

During the ceremony, the SBS announcer mentioned that Kim's absence was due to his confinement at the hospital. However, Kim's management released an official statement refuting this, saying that Kim was not hospitalized but he is taking a rest with his parents. All his schedules have been canceled so he can focus on recovering his body weight and improve his physical condition.

Kim Myung Min is known to have undergone a drastic weight loss during the course of the three and a half filming for the movie. He reduced from 72 kilos to a skeletal 51.6 kilos by the end of filming in May. Closer to Heaven opened on September 24 and it remained on top of the charts for 3 consecutive weeks.
