Gabby Lopez and Charo Santos-Concio throw a ‘pa-burger’ party
by Fionna Abaca | May 31, 2009 12:36 AM | Share this article

ABS-CBN celebrated its record-breaking sales and number one ranking with a “pa-burger” party for all its employees. After a thanksgiving mass, ABS-CBN employees were treated to a salu-salo of cheeseburgers, apple pie, and sodas. Charo Santos-Concio opened her heartfelt congratulatory speech by shouting, “Number 1 tayo!” On behalf of Gabby Lopez, she expressed their gratitude to all the employees. “ABS-CBN is the only media company which is included in the Top 15 Corporations awarded with Good Corporate Governance. Also, we have obtained a record-breaking revenue of close to 1.4 Billion pesos for the month of May.”

Santos recalled the hard times and reminded people of the phase ABS-CBN lost its leadership. “Nagpapatunay lang na ang mga leksiyon na natutunan natin sa ating pagkakadapa ay nasa puso nating lahat. Tandaan natin na hindi ito para sa atin, para ito sa publikong sinisilbihan natin.” She attributed the success to the values Kapamilya employees live with. “Nakakatuwa po sa puso dahil sa lahat ng pag-renew natin ng ating values—value of excellence, the value of meritocracy, teaching and learning, the value of honesty and integrity, ito pong mga values na ito ang nagdala sa atin sa pagiging number one.”

Charie Villa, ABS-CBN Head of Newsgathering, shared the secret of this success. “Alam niyo po, ang sikreto diyan ay ang pagmamamahal sa trabaho. Pag sinabing public service, tatakbo at magpupuyat. Maraming-maraming salamat, iba talaga ang ABS-CBN!”

The pa-burger salu-salo was held simultaneously with the ABS-CBN Regional Network Group in Luzon,

GMA Network pays P1.1B in income tax

    Philippine Daily Inquirer
    First Posted 22:32:00 04/19/2009

Filed Under: Government, Company Information, State Budget & Taxes

MANILA, Philippines--GMA Network Inc. said it had paid the government P1.1 billion in corporate income tax for 2008.

This was 46 of the company’s net income and 65 percent of cash dividends declared for the year.

“GMA leads in fulfilling its responsibilities as a corporate citizen, as our corporate income tax almost equals our biggest competitor’s net income for 2008,” GMA Network chief financial officer Felipe Yalong said in a press statement.

The amount did not include other taxes paid for by the network including value-added tax (VAT) and withholding tax.

GMA Network, the most profitable broadcast company in the Philippines, has been cited as a top taxpayer by the government for the past years.

The firm posted a net profit of P2.37 billion in 2008, 3 percent higher than the 2007 level.

It sees growth in gross revenue and net income this year despite the projected flat growth in total industry advertising minutes this year.

The network recently declared a cash dividend of P1.7 billion, which was 70 percent of its 2008 net income. The record date for this year’s cash dividends is April 21, while payment date is May 11.

GMA profits up 10.4%; ABS-CBN down by 21%

    By Jenniffer B. Austria

BITTER rivals in the television wars yesterday reported contrasting financial results for the first quarter, with GMA Network showing a 10.4-percent rise in net income and ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. reporting a 21-percent drop in profits.

GMA Network said net income came to P501 million, up from P454 million in the same period last year, as it benefited from higher airtime and subscription revenues.

Airtime revenues from television and radio rose 1 percent to P2.41 billion from P2.39 billion last year as the networks’ advertising minutes climbed 5.1 percent in the first three months.

GMA Network earns P501 million in Q1
    By JAMES A. LOYOLA
    May 15, 2009, 7:50pm

Leading broadcast company GMA Network, Inc. expects to exceed its 2009 net income target of P2.8 billion, which is already 18 percent higher than the firm’s 2008 profit of P2.37 billion, based on its strong performance in the first five months of the year.

In a press briefing, GMA chairman Felipe Gozon said this optimism is based on the firm’s 10.4 percent growth in net income in the first quarter of the year despite weaker industry-wide figures as well as the P934.86 million revenues they have earned from May 1 to May 13.

GMA executive vice president Gilberto Duavit explained that the P934 million includes pre-booking for the entire month while GMA senior vice president Felipe Yalong noted that the firm should be able to hit P1 billion in revenues every month starting May to reach its target net income.

Notwithstanding the reduction in industry advertising expenditures, GMA managed to post a net profit of P501 million during the first quarter of 2009 versus the P454 million it netted in the same period last year.

Gross Revenues for the first three months went up by 3 percent to P2.65 billion despite the contraction in the ad spend of major advertisers. Revenues from TV and Radio continued to lead the pack with a 91 percent share in the gross revenue pie, despite posting a modest increase of 1 percent to P2.418 billion.

    ABS-CBN net income falls 21% to P191 M
    By JAMES A. LOYOLA
    May 15, 2009, 6:28pm

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. reported that its net income attributable to shareholders of parent company for the first quarter of 2009 fell 21 percent to P191 million, from the P242 million in the same period of 2008.

Based on the firm’s press briefing Friday, profits dropped due to the huge decline in airtime revenues of flagship Channel 2 as well as the effect of the consolidation of Skycable which reported losses due to its capital expenditure program.

Consolidated revenues of ABS-CBN reached P5.29 billion in the first quarter of 2009 inclusive of Skycable’s total revenue contribution of P878 million, registering a year-on-year growth of 24 percent.

Consolidated airtime revenues of P2.76 billion in the first quarter reflect an overall 2 percent decline from the same period last year.

ABS-CBN said it was able to maintain advertising rates at acceptable levels, such that airtime revenues from parent company of P2.52 billion slipped by only 5 percent from last year’s level, even if advertising minutes of Channel 2 declined by as much as 20 percent.
