2009 57th FAMAS Awards: articles, nominees, winners, comments...

HALL OF FAME WATCH

A noticeable oversight was the non-awarding of the FAMAS Hall of Fame to Albert Michael Idioma, who won his fifth FAMAS Best Sound award last year. For the 57th FAMAS Awards, he will be joined Jesse Lucas (who won his fifth FAMAS Award this year for A Love Story) for the Musical Scoring category in being due for the coveted Hall of Fame designation.

‘Caregiver’ premieres to a jam-packed audience

    by: Crispina Belen

PARIS – Star Cinema’s last offering, "Caregiver" starring Megastar Sharon Cuneta premiered last night to a jampacked audience at the MK2 Bibliotheque where the ongoing 6th Paris Cinema International Film Festival is being held till July 13. Ms. Cuneta, Chito Roño, the director of the movie, Star Cinema producer Ms. Malou Santos, and Ms. Olive Lamasan, who directed Sharon in past two blockbuster movies including "Madrasta," were the special guests of honor. They were welcomed by Ambassador and Mrs. Zaide, and Rolando S. Atienza, chairman of the Film Development Council of the Philippines who headed the Philippine delegation to the Paris Cinema IFF, the focus of which is the Philippine movie industry.

As expected, fans of the Megastar excitedly awaited her arrival and cheered wildly when Sharon arrived with her entourage that also included her good friend and make-up artist Fanny Serrano. The premiere showing was delayed a little because everyone wanted to have a picture taken with the Megastar who obliged dutifully and happily. Sharon enjoined them to enjoy the movie because it’s really for them, the Philippines' new heroes (the Overseas Filipino Workers or OFWs). "With this movie, my respect for you rose 100%," Sharon said.

Since its opening, "Caregiver" has earned P200-M more or less, including from its screenings globally (it had five screenings in London, two in Italy ), this according to Ms. Santos. In Paris, there was just one screening scheduled but it could have been more because of the clamor for more OFWs who couldn’t buy tickets anymore when the July 4 premiere tickets were easily sold out.

And to think that the Philippine participation in this annual Paris Cinema IFF almost did not push through, Ambassador Zaide revealed at the cocktail preceding the premiere showing (held at the Hotel de de la Monnaie) and before the screening of "Caregiver" at the MK2 Bibliotheque. "It seemed there was no funding for the Philippine participation until someone told me to write to the Film Development Council of the Philippines, whose chairman it turned out was a contemporary and former classmate of mine, Mr. Atienza. So everything fell into place. The Philippine delegation also included another superstar, Judy Ann Santos whose movie "Ploning" also had its premiere showing the day after "Caregiver." Judy Ann and her boyfriend Ryan Agoncillo and "Ploning’s" director Dante Nico Garcia, attended the premiere of "Caregiver" and they were also given a rousing welcome by the very warm crowd.

Before the premiere showing of "Caregiver," there was a round-table discussion about Philippine cinema, with Jeremy Segay, program director of Paris Cinema IFF as moderator, and with Ms. Christine Dayrit of the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB), Engr. Roesholm Camaligan, president of the National Cinema Association of the Philippines, director Chito Rono and Martin Macalintal, cultural attach of the French Embassy in Manila as panelists.

After this, another discussion was also held, this time about the New Independent Filipino Cinema with film critic and staunch supporter of Philippine cinema Max Tessier, producer Arleen Cuevas, director Auraeus Solito ("Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros," "Tuli"), as director Jade Castro ("Endo") as speakers.

Interestingly, screened simultaneously with "Caregiver" is Regal Films’ "Temptation Island" which also drew a full crowd at another theater at MK2 Bibliotheque. Almost all of the audience were French and other foreigners who evidently were impressed by the movie. " "Temptation Island" is one of four Regal movies comprising the Joey Gosiengfiao tribute. The others are "Bomba Star," "Katorse," and "Underage." The two other Regal movies shown at the Paris Cinema IFF are "Gagamboy" and "Serafin Geronimo, ang Kriminal ng Baryo Concepcion."

Hindi ba joke ang iba dito? I cant believe it, si Richard Gutierez nominated pero John Lloyd and Piolo hindi? they have movies too. Anong criteria dito? Magaganda ang performance nila compare to Richard G. Kahit si JLC or Piolo or even Coco or Baron na lang instead of Richard, Kasali din ang indie films diba? sana isinali na rin nila si Dingdong para mas nakakatawa.. Dahil ba lagi sila nananalo, pagbigyan ang iba? Now, where's the credibility of this award giving body if thats the case. Richard is so lousy, he cant even act in FTFT.
