    Carlo back to ‘home base’
DIRECT LINE By Boy Abunda (The Philippine Star) | Updated May 30, 2013 -

Carlo Aquino has signed a two-year contract with ABS-CBN and has been cast in an important role in the TV remake of Annaliza.

He has been called “one of the most brilliant actors of his generation,” and he has the awards to prove it: Nominations and wins from practically every award-giving body in showbiz, from the Philippine Movie Press Club’s Star Awards for Television (which conferred on him a Best Actor win for his performance in Maalaala Mo Kaya’s Scapular episode) to the FAMAS (which, in 1999, was the earliest to recognize his potential when it named him Best Child Actor for the Vilma Santos starrer Bata, Bata Paano ka Ginawa?)

Going by that record alone, Carlo Aquino should already be in the top tier of showbiz’s young actors. But he is honest enough to admit that his progress would have been faster had he not allowed himself to be swallowed up by his own fears and doubts. This is his first time to admit that he had a problem living up to people’s expectations. The irony of it all is that there were some projects that he turned down —projects that would have increased his visibility and challenged him as an actor — because he wasn’t sure he could do them, although other people believed he could. They couldn’t understand why someone like Carlo, who has been in the business since he was a child, and showed immense potential as an actor, would feel that way. Hinayaan kong lamunin ako n’ung kaba, n’ung takot na ‘yon,” he says. At one point, he even blamed the situation on his height, or lack of it. He believed the fact that he was shorter than some of his contemporaries was the reason why he wasn’t getting picked for certain roles, when the truth was it was his own internal demons that he had to fight.

Whenever those fears would hit, Carlo would take a temporary hiatus from showbiz and turn to other things to give himself a break. He tried doing indie films. He put up a business. He tried switching networks and changing managers. But nothing worked. He remained in this situation for about three years. This stop-and-start approach to his career is the reason why he has been held back. But Carlo knows there is no one to blame but himself. “Wala akong ibang sinisisi kundi sarili ko,” he says honestly.

Now he is back and trying to make his way through the industry again. He has returned to his “home base,” which is ABS-CBN and Star Magic — he re-signed with them late last year — and has decided that this time, he will try harder to defeat his fears. The key has been embracing his fear and accepting that for as long as he is in this industry, they will never really go away. He has to learn how to face them and make them work to his advantage instead of letting them drag him down.

Fortunately for Carlo, there are people who never lost faith in him or his abilities as an actor. One of them is no less than ABS-CBN’s president and CEO Charo Santos-Concio, also host of Maalaala Mo Kaya, the show on which Carlo enjoyed some of his best moments as an actor. “Kinuha ako ni Ma’am Charo ulit, eh si Ma’am Charo kasi, lagi niya akong ni-re-request, tapos minsan, nahihiya man ako, minsan ayoko kasi sobrang iniisip ko, ‘Ah, kaya ko ba?’ gan’un.”

Now his career seems to be picking up steam. With a signed two-year network contract, Carlo has been cast in an important role in the TV remake of Annaliza, and has other projects waiting in the wings. “N’ung una nga, sabi ko, ‘Totoo ba ito?’ Parang ang bilis kasi ng mga pangyayari. Nag-MMK kami ni Joem (Bascon), tapos Dugong Buhay, tapos Annaliza. Natutuwa ako. Sana tuloy-tuloy na nga.”

He draws inspiration from his family and his non-showbiz girlfriend, whom he has been with for three years. Carlo is hopeful that this time around, things will only get better — and we hope the same, because someone as gifted an actor as he is deserves only the best.

Carlo Aquino on his very convincing portrayal of gay roles: “Once na sumigaw na ng action, parang si Carlo Aquino nawawala na at ang lumalabas ay yung role.”

Carlo Aquino narrates how his role for Maalaala Mo Kaya's "Pulang Laso" episode came about: “Nasa shooting ako, ipinadala sa akin ang script at tinatanong ako kung gusto ko raw gawin. So tinanggap ko. At saka maganda talaga yung story.”

“Three episodes yung pelikula.

And… first gay role ko 'yon.”

For Movies during the early part of this year.

So tinanggap ko.

At saka maganda talaga yung story.

LOVE LIFE.

Kasi before, may singing group sila. Sa Viva siya dati. Ang pangalan niya… Kristine Nieto.

“Three years na kami. Pero wala pa kaming planong magpakasal.

“Bata pa kami. Twenty-seven lang ako. Twenty-four naman siya.

“Four to five years pa siguro bago ko maisipang mag-asawa.

Right now, I’m into business also. Meron akong tarpaulin business.

    by: Kristhoff Cagape

Carlo Aquino admitted that he enjoyed playing his kontrabida role in Annaliza. "Na-enjoy ko, first time kong maging ganito kasama ini-enjoy ko lang ‘yung experience."

When asked if that means that he would like to do more kontrabida roles in the future, the actor remarked that he is open to do any roles that would be offered to him. "Kung ano mang role ang ibibigay sa akin gagawin ko sa abot ng makakaya ko," he said.

Carlo shared that he is happily in a relationship at the moment. He admitted though that he is not yet ready to settle down with his girlfriend of three years. "Wala pa maaga, pa. Hindi pa muna siguro, mag-iipon pa. Gagayahin ko si kuya Zanjoe (Marudo)," he said. Would he want to have a baby though before getting married? “Hindi natin alam. Mahirap magsalita ng tapos eh," he stated.

On his advice for his co-star Kaye Abad who recently broke up with Guji Lorenzana, he quipped, "Maging happy ka muna habang single ka para di ka nananabang.”

    Ex-couple Angelica, Carlo reunite onscreen

MANILA - Former couple Angelica Panganiban and Carlo Aquino are finally reuniting on television, almost 10 years after their last project as a love team.

Panganiban and Aquino, who were in a relationship for five years until 2005, will topbill the upcoming episode of ABS-CBN's "Maalaala Mo Kaya" on May 17.

In the episode directed by Nuel Naval, Panganiban plays Susan, a married woman who falls in love with her husband's (Wowie de Guzman) younger brother (Aquino).

"Maalaala Mo Kaya" was also Panganiban and Aquino's last TV project together. They co-starred in a September 2005 episode titled "Paru-Paro."

While they did not act together on TV for almost a decade, Panganiban and Aquino recently shared the big screen in the 2013 supense-thriller "Ang Alamat ni China Doll," an entry in that year's Cinema One Originals film festival.

Before "China Doll," for which Panganiban won a Best Actress award, the former couple was last paired in a movie in 2003's "Mano Po III: My Love."

In an April 2013 interview with entertainment magazine StarStudio, Panganiban said her relationship with Aquino never had the chance to deepen and mature, recalling this to be the reason of the breakup.

"As in manonood kami ng sine, kasama 'yung parents niya, 'yung mama ko, ganoon. Pag kakain kami, magfa-fastfood kami," she said at the time.

After their relationship, Panganiban and Aquino were involved with other personalities, also from showbiz.

Panganiban had a six-year relationship with actor Derek Ramsay until February 2012, and is now in a relationship with fellow Star Magic artist John Lloyd Cruz.

Aquino, meanwhile, admitted to courting actress Maja Salvador after his breakup with Panganiban, but they never became a couple. He is now in a relationship with model Kristine Nieto.

MANILA -- Actor Carlo Aquino admitted that he is not yet ready to settle down with his non-showbiz girlfriend.

"Nag-iipon pa talaga ako," Aquino told reporters in an interview on Wednesday after the press conference of his upcoming series "Flordeliza."

"Siguro mga two or three years maximum. Ngayon siya ang nagma-manage ng food truck business namin 'yung Big Bite Avenue," he said.

But Aquino, who admitted that he really matured when it comes to love, is certain that he already sees himself marrying his girlfriend.

Tapos na ako doon," he said.

But this doesn't mean they are already planning their wedding. Dapat isipin mo kung ano ang pwedeng mangyari," he said.

    Working with showbiz crush

Meamnwhile, Aquino said he is happy to be given a chance to work with his showbiz crush, Jolina Magdangal.

Siyempre hindi ko mahihindian at kasama ko si direk Wenn (Deramas) at first time kong makakasama si Jolens," he said, recalling that he once had a guest stint on Magdangal's old series "Gimik."

"Pero one day lang ako noon," Aquino said.

Carlo Aquino admitted that he feels thankful yet pressured to be part of the upcoming ABS-CBN soap Flordeliza. Carlo will be working with Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal in the said teleserye. “Siyempre grateful kasi after Annaliza, March ‘yun natapos.

During the grand presscon of the soap, the actor confessed that he had a crush on Jolina before. “Alam niya ‘yun matagal na. Mga 13 years old pa ako pero crush lang naman, ano ba naman yun,” he said. Carlo shared that he found Jolina adorable way back when he was still a teenager. “Nakakatuwa kaya. Ang ganda niyang tingnan sa screen tapos ‘yung humor niya, nakakatawa kasi siya,” he said about Jolina.

With old love teams being reunited, is he open to working again with Angelica Panganiban? “Oo naman sobrang magkaibigan kami ni Angel (Angelica) nakapag MMK (Maalaala Mo Kaya) na kami so sana hopefully next year kung mabibigyan ng chance gagawin ko talaga.” When asked if what genre of show would he want to do with Angelica, Carlo relayed, “Dramedy (drama-comedy) para iba naman kasi usually pag nag-MMK kami drama-drama mas maganda kung medyo light,” he said.

Carlo remarked that he is truly happy with how his career is running at the moment.

Jolina Magdangal enjoys being Carlo Aquino’s newest loveteam
    4/12/2015 11:46 PM
    by: Leo Bukas

Never in my life sa show business ako nabakante.

And to think mas bata siya sa akin.

Parang ganun, ha, basta extended siya,” masaya niyang pahayag.

Two old movies seen recently on Cinema One which starred Carlo Aquino made me admire him as an actor even more; Kahapon may dalawang bata by Carlos Siquion-Reyna and Minsan may isang puso by Jose Javier Reyes.

“‘Tapos dito, ila-loveteam kami,” natawang sabi niya.
