Like any red-blooded American teenager, John Tyler Hammons digs rock music, fast cars, video games and...fiscal planning?

Apparently so. The AP reports that the University of Oklahoma freshman trounced 70 year-old Hershel McBride to become the mayor of Muskogee, Oklahoma, making it the first city in the nation to be governed by a self-admitted gamer. Read More...

Juggling calls from people around the country Thursday, he took an important one from his mother. She wanted to know what time he would be home for dinner.

The U.S. culture nurtures and encourages its youth to mature beyond their years.

It is very difficult to say the same with the Pinoy culture in which even the maternal family system suppresses the independence of its children. At most the Pinoy youth is made more and more dependent on the parents and most parents find it very difficult to let go of their kids. If the parents can have their way, they would rather have their kids stay kids forever.

Yes, US culture encourages early maturity, they encourage independence at 18, that you should live on your own, or else shame on you. They soon realize this is not economically sound.

A close-knit family system that suppresses the independence of children is the norm so far as the whole world is concerned. Only the US culture is unique in encouraging independence...that is kicking teenagers out of the house as soon as they graduate high school.

It's so amusing to see another self-hating social expert obsessed in making comparisons between filipinos and americans....please spare us your colonial mentality. It's so "filipeenow" of you. :rotflmao:
