TV Times' morning and afternoon TV guide for October 28, 1977. Photo courtesy of Leamsi Inovero Valondo (Memories of Old Manila). What are some of the shows from this TV guide that are still worth remembering?

This was how Martial Law television was like back then. Imagine showing Batman at 6:30PM, which today, is considered the most primetime (expensive) hour in PHL television.

Then you have public service programs like Damayan (starring Rosa Rosal) and Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko (Orly Mercado) shown at 6PM.

Too bad the next page wasn't included in the scanned photo. We could have seen the shows aired during the evening slot. The news was normally at 7PM (Newswatch, News at 7, IBC Balita, etc) with familiar faces like Bong Lapira, Tina Monzon-Palma, Harry Gasser, Frankie Evangelista, Lee Andres, Raffy Pedroche and Frankie Abao, Jr. as the personalities. Loren Legarda, Thelma Aranda, Ninez Cacho-Olivares, etc. came in much after to backstop Gasser at Newswatch.

Canned foreign programs were normally aired on GMA and RPN after the newscast. IBC aired old Filipino movies (Piling Piling Pelikula) or drama programs while BBC also had its share of Filipino telenovelas. MBS-4, the government network, aired the PBA games.

At 10:30PM, the news was back on air, at least for GMA and RPN. By 12MN, the stations went off the air.

Actually, IBC-13's evening newscast was titled "Newsday," which aired from 1975 to 1986. Following its cancellation, "Newsday" was replaced by "Balita sa IBC."

Meanwhile, we could say in the end that GMA had the monopoly of acquiring American TV shows for its line-up.

TRIVIA: According to that TV Times issue, GMA aired a 5-minute game show called "Lucky Break," sponsored by Philip Morris Menthols. It aired Mondays-Fridays at 7:25-7:30 p.m.

A rare find: This is one of the earliest TV recordings of RPN-9 that has been preserved for many generations; this was in 1980. Audio format only.

Not really monopoly, but yes, they did acquire the best TV shows from the 3 major networks in the USA back then (CBS, NBC, ABC). But the other networks had their own, notably RPN 9 which had "Six Million Dollar Man," "The Gemini Man," "The Bionic Woman," "Happy Days," "Diff'rent Strokes," "Fantasy Island," "The Waltons," "Dallas," "Hawaii Five-O," "Wonder Woman," etc.

IBC also had "Man From Atlantis" starring Patrick Duffy, although they showed more Filipino movies back then (Piling Piling Pelikula). BBC 2 had several local shows like Manila Files, Prrt Foul, Ang Makulay Na Daigdig Ni Nora, among others...

So, at least, there was fair competition on the acquiring and airing of American TV shows. IBC-13's excessive emphasis on Pinoy TV shows and movies must be the reason why it adopted the slogan "BPT: Basta Pinoy sa Trese," which was their last relevant slogan prior to the infamous sequesteration.

Speaking of BBC-2, I read from a June 14, 1984 issue of Movie Flash Magazine's TV Connection section (by BCMatignas) that despite frantic efforts to improve programming, BBC-2, by then called "City 2," was a poor performer, because the signal quality was a problem. According to televiewers being interviewed by the author, they can only receive City 2 from a bit-clear signal in Pasay, while those residing in Alabang, Muntinlupa, and Cavite complained that City 2 could totally not be received. This became the reason why "Okey Sha!" was cancelled, while Inday Badiday's programs were forced to move to IBC-13, since the latter has stronger signal. You may read more about this in http://pelikulaatbp.blogspot.com/2013/03/april-1984-tv-programs-survey-tv.html

mapunta lang ako sa commercials uli...

i suddenly remembered how unilever/PRC tried to revive the pepsodent toothpaste brand twice in the '90s...of course, a lot of '80s kids would probably remember orly mercado as endorser/"man-on-the-street" interviewer for the product back in the day--as well as the words, "lasang bebel gum"...

but in the '90s, when pepsodent was relaunched, they first had robert jaworski (then the playing coach for the la tonde?a franchise) and his son ryan (who would figure out in a shooting incident years later) as endorsers..."sa bisa, sa lasa, unbeatable!" was their tagline back then.

a couple of years later, though, the brand was given another relaunch...unilever perhaps wanted to target the kids for that, as they got a young paolo contis (he was already doing "ang tv" and "oki doki doc" by then) to do a series of pepsodent commercials about bad "animal-looking" smiles ("ngiting tsonggo," "ngiting aso", etc.) and how brushing with pepsodent can supposedly avoid these...

but of course, we haven't really found pepsodent in grocery shelves for a loooooooooong time now...

Orly Mercado is now on FM radio, Radyo Singko every morning at 6.

naku, 'di ko naabutan 'yan, although i did read about that before...i was most likely born already when mel tiangco was with channel 4, pero nung una ko siyang napanood, nasa "tv patrol" na siya...

speaking of weather reports...ang naabutan ko na sa channel 4 doing the weather ay si nanette lomarda at nathaniel cruz (who now makes some special appearances sa GMA newscasts 'pag may mga matitinding weather conditions)...PTV was, perhaps, the only station to use the term "weather specialist" to intro their weathercasters...at impyernes, at that time (mga early '90s yun), sa malaking board na sila nagwe-weather... :D

coincidentally, ang channel 4 noon, nasa ABS-CBN broadcast center for the longest time (until the early '90s, when they moved to visayas avenue just beside the philippine information agency)...the channel 4 frequency kasi used to be owned by ABS-CBN until marcos closed it down and seized the network from the lopezes...and after EDSA, channel 2 lang ang ibinalik na TV frequency ng aquino government sa mga lopezes...

ang nangyari kasi d'yan noon was, in 1969, when the old RPN wanted to have a manila tv station, hindi ma-accommodate...the frequencies being used were channels 3 (ABS-CBN), 5 (ABC--then under the manila times, owned by don chino roces), 7 (RBS--then under the late bob stewart), 9 (ABS-CBN), 11 (MBC--'yung may-ari ng DZRH) and 13 (IBC--then under RMN and the sorianos, former owners ng san miguel)...ABS gave the channel 9 frequency to RPN (then owned by roberto benedicto, one of marcos' cronies), and sold to them the old ABS building in roxas boulevard (because at that time, ABS-CBN had already moved to the broadcast center in QC)...all shows airing on channels 3 and 9 back then moved to channels 2 (which they still use) and 4, respectively...

Nathaniel "Mang Tani" Cruz now does Facebook live weather updates on the GMA News Facebook page aside from his weather reports on Unang Hirit and 24 Oras.

2011 bumalik pa ata si Angelo Castro Jr. sa pag-anchor sa The World Tonight. In 2012 he eventually died of (I forgot)... Prior to that, his wife, June Keithley was interviewed. She eventually lost her battle to cancer (I also couldn't remember exactly when).

Angelo Castro Jr. died of lung cancer. His son Diego now does the news for UNTV using the name Angelo Castro III.

Gone are the days when you could instantly change channels due to variety of good programs in different tv networks. I remember in late 90's-early 00's, buhay na buhay ang ibc-13 rpn 9 at abc-5. Wala pa masyado network war nun. Abc-5 used to air american tv series like f.r.i.e.n.d.s, baywatch etc.

  • James Ty IIIJames Ty III Member PEx Influencer ⭐⭐⭐
But you have to admire CNN Ch 9 for being a true alternative to the other channels that have sensationalized news.

I hope Sec. Andanar starts prioritizing the sale of IBC.

Parang di ko naabutan na pinalabas din sa abs. Early 90s ba? Late 90's na kasi naaalala ko :)

I remember din pinapanood namin ang sing galing sa abc 5. Didn't know na parang hawig *** sa format ng TNT. This I realized sa kakapanood ng TNt sa it's showtime hehehe

Watching tv was more fun and better back then. We had a lot of choices :)

Baywatch was shown on ABS in the early 90s. It's being aired now on Jeepney TV.

A movie version starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be shown in US theaters next year.

Sing Galing was more like All Star K.

Early 90s sa ABS-CBN ang Baywatch pero noong nagkaisip ako mas naalala ko ang stint niya sa Studio 23 na nga. :)

Nope. All Star K's format was completely different. Only one of the hosts was retained (allan k). If my memory serves me right, may 7 yata na na contestants sa ALK tas may mga missing lyrics each song in each round.

Sa SG may gong-gong din. Weekly champion (coz it was a weekly show). May 3 contestants then the daily winner would be up against the defending champion. I remember leah (the voice ph, season 2) became the 1st champion sa grand finals. Ethel booba was also a defending champ for more than 10 weeks :)

i guess i've explained it too long for your short statement :) ... Wala lang, namimiss ko sing galing hahaha
