After failing to capture titles in their last two national tournaments, seven-time Cesafi champions University of the Visayas (UV) will be looking for redemption next month as they compete in a 16-team tournament pitting the best collegiate basketball teams in the country on April 21 to 27 in Manila.

According to head coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug, the competition, which is being organized by ABS-CBN, will be another opportunity for the Lancers to redeem themselves after defeats in the championship rounds of the Collegiate Champions League in December and the National Students Basketball Championships last month.

The road to redemption though, will not be a cakewalk especially with the participation of reigning UAAP champions De La Salle University, runner-up University of the East, CCL champions Ateneo de Manila University along with other UAAP and NCAA powerhouse squads.

Champion teams from the different leagues in the country are also slated to join the tournament.

“This is another chance for us to finally capture a national title and hopefully, we will make the most out of this time around,” Cabahug said in an interview with Cebu Daily News on Tuesday.

Cabahug added that his lineup will most likely be missing the services of big man Ariel Mepana, although stalwarts Greg Slaughter and Mike Luga will be around to man the paint.

Rino Berame, who is playing for Toyota-Otis in the PBL will also don UV’s colors.

Former Cesafi juniors MVPs Harold Cincoflores and Phil Mercader are expected to be activated for the tournament. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
