FPj is a bedan. Si erap drop-out ng mapua
  • oo. mga co - mapuans...lahat ng sikat na MAPUA GRADS are either in private or govt practice....si dado banatao is the pinoy genius of silicone valley fame. he is now working as a consultant to the AYALA FOUNDATION. ang isa pang sikat na MAPUAN ay si nilo cruz of HP PHILS PERO NAG RESIGN NA CYA THIS YEAR FOR UNKNOWN REASONS. MAS SIKAT ANG MAPUA SA GLOBAL COMPETITION. WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT, MARAMING SUCCESSFUL MAPUANS SA ABROAD BUT OF COURSE THEIR NAMES ARE NOT PUBLISHED IN THE NET. LOW PROFILE LANG SILANG LAHAT........ANG FRUSTRATION NA LANG NATIN NGAYON IS THE DETERIORATING PERFORMANCE NG MAPUA SA BOARD EXAMS.....HOPE THE YUCHENGCO'S WILL SEE THIS AS A CHALLENGE TO IMPROVE THE RATINGS OF THE SCHOOL PARA MAGANDA ANG CONVERSION NYA TO A UNIVERSITY IN THE NEAR FUTURE. *okay* :)

Just would like to thank one of your alumni, Diosdado Banatao for supporting UP projects through the years. Recently, he pledged US$500,000 to the UP College of Engineering as per article below. Indeed we need more of him to make engineering in the Philippines world class. :D

    Entrepreneur calls for Eng’g R&D, pledges $500,000
    Francis Paolo M. Quina

Engr. Diosdado Banatao was cheered during the 2007 UP Alumni Association in America (UPAAA) General Assembly and Convention Gala Dinner held on September 2 at the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton in San Francisco, California when UP President Emerlinda Roman announced that he and his wife Maria had pledged USD$500,000.00 to the UP College of Engineering (COE).

During one of the convention’s breakout workshops earlier in the day, Banatao talked about the pressing need for technology development in the Philippines. He said that technology development is necessary for economic development as they yield high value products that have an almost limitless demand in the global market. He cited neighboring Asian economies of Taiwan, Korea and Japan as examples. Banatao said that the challenge for a developing economy such as the Philippines is “to identify products and services that create a competitive advantage in growth sectors of the global economy.”

However, Banatao stated that the Philippines’ current technology infrastructure is not ready to take on such a task, as it requires sustaining technologies transferred from foreign investments. The problem may be traced back to the shortage of research scientists and engineers in the country due to flaws in the higher educational system, such as the predominant use of teachers with only bachelor’s degrees. He also cited the lack of cutting-edge research laboratories in the country as a problem.

For Banatao, the country’s only sources for research and development are science and engineering schools. Unfortunately, they too have their own problems, namely the lack of support from both the public and private sectors. He said the public and privates sectors, as well as academe, need to develop a culture that respects and rewards people who choose to go into the fields of Science, Technology, and Engineering, especially in advanced research.

Banatao has a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Mapua Institute of Technology and a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Stanford University. In 2000, he received an honorary degree from UP in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field of Computer Science.

He has been a Silicon Valley fixture since the late 1970s, co-founding the companies Mostron, Chips and Technologies, and S3 Graphics. He has also served on the board of directors and as chairman of several emerging companies, including Marvell Technology Group, NewPort Communications, and Cyras Systems.

He is currently a managing partner at Tallwood Venture Capital, and member of the advisory committee for the Engineering Research and Development for Technology Consortium (ERDT), a consortium of seven universities led by UP, which seeks to develop the field of Engineering research and development in the country.

    really? ngee. didnt know this.

    off topic:

i think one of the most famous mapuans is doc. sison. ha ha ha.. is he still alive? havent heard of this mapua's einstein for almost a decade now.

i couldnt forget one of his theories he once told us:

'compression' members (concrete) do no actually fail just by pure crushing but by shearing or a combination of both. he he he he..

parang totoo eh.. kasi hindi lagi perfectly aligned at perfect ang section.. sabi niya kaunting-kaunti lang misaligment, wala nang pure compression, pag may tabingi, pasok na ang shear.. he he he.. that's from doc. sison, folks.

hindi pa ce ang tinapos niyan.. :)
