Dingdong and Marian:TV's newest, hottest and sexiest couple

Why 'Mari Mar' works

Manila Bulletin

There seems to be nothing new on TV these days except for recent noontime clashes that combined network war and reality TV. But save for that, we have the competing time slots practically presenting the same brand of entertainment, clashing networks on the side, controversial characters acting like heathen coals to an otherwise quiet fire that is the battle of the big channels.

After browsing through scandals on youtube.com and growing impatient on requests for sample episodes of "Marimar" from GMA7, we tried scanning uploaded episodes of the remake series and to our surprise, the youtube has nearly uninterrupted and almost complete episodes of the former Mexican telenovela that swept the country to nightly TV captivity years ago on RPN9.

Those who have been following "Mari Mar," the story of the innocent, fish-out-of-water (or in Mari Mar’s case fish-out-of-the-ocean) character know that she (Marian Rivera) is the central character used by Sergio Santibañez (Dingdong Dantes) to get back at his ex-girlfriend Angelika (Katrina Halili) who married his father Renato (Richard Gomez) for wealth’s sake.

While every other character in "Mari Mar" has his or her own self–indulgent intentions, good or not—even Mari Mar’s lola Cruz (Caridad Sanchez) and lolo Pancho (Leo Martinez) who both wanted Marimar to themselves initially—here is a she — protagonist with a heart too pure, a face too beautiful and a body too hot, she deserves to rule an island all to her own.

Like all other good beings and things in the world, she becomes corrupted because of love; love for the first gorgeous man she laid her eyes on. She fell hard on first sight that her pupils nearly took shapes of a drawn heart (which Marian so convincingly portrays).

But like all innocence corrupted, Mari Mar is thrown into a self-defining adventure in the presence of the aforementioned characters. While she is confined within the premises of the life-changing, resort-mansion as Sergio’s wife, Mari Mar discovers the world, for real this time: One that’s far from the free-wheeling sink then swim daily hunts for talangka she painstakingly did each day for her lolo and lola until coming-of-age-struck like lightning against a peaceful child’s slumber.

For the rest of the story, try to make it on time to see the pace of the plot breeze past like the TV commercials bidding for spots. Or trust youtube friends like PinkEspaniola and cutiemikee for nearly unabridged updates.

Marimar is entertaining. At a time when TV is nearly losing face and shape to reality shows of all forms and same-old talk show and power drifts, here is a revival show that actually works despite it being a remake.

To faithful fans of the Mexican telenovela, here is a tasteful try/success. After all, shows like "Betty La Fea" had been given the successful worldwide spin including the Hollywood triumph that is "Ugly Betty," so why not would the Philippines give it a shot?

What works most for "Mari Mar" is how it has essayed, scene after scene, its characters and situations that couldn’t be described but clear-cut telenovela that’s engaging. Even the parts where Marimar, due to her incomparable katangahan, gets clobbered and wasted by the scheming Angelika are funny.

Finally, here is a character you still root for despite being dim-witted and it’s all because she’s so pure at heart and lovable, one could never blame Mari Mar for being too giving and given.

Dingdong Dantes is finally given the role he so fit in, he’s even more believably handsome than the real Sergio (sorry Eduardo Capetillo). A jerk with a conscience, Dingdong’s Sergio (although we still couldn’t place how come he fails to see that Angelika is behind every Mari Mar shame-uproars and bloopers) defines a leading man, one that today’s TV tend to candy-coat recently with special effects. Here is an a****le who can get away with being one because he’s rich and gorgeous and he enjoys exchanging testosterone blades with his equally power–tripping father.

Richard Gomez, as the power-protective Renato is also good with his role. He’s smart and just happened to fall for the blinding Angelika. He hates the guts of his son, who is probably the only person who thinks he is not respect–worthy around the Santibañez household. Although sometimes the word war is overdone between Sergio and Renato, we still choose to suspend disbelief and enjoy the punchlines of having Sergio consistently putting one over his father nonchalantly.

Katrina Halili as Angelika also is a force on the small screen. It’s easy to be kontrabida these days and invite hate fromk viewers but to show the same hurt each time she gets jealous over Sergio and Mari Mar is something else.

Another extremely evident factor working towards GMA-7’s favor is the undeniably palpable chemistry between Dingdong and Marian.

Plain and simple: Sparks fly when Dingdong and Marian are together on screen. The bath tub scene and the tequilla sequence proclaim a new legitimate screen tandem we haven’t seen for a while.

Marian is one hot actress. With her beauty and sensuality could, she not be emanating such prowess in acting but guess what? She simply does. She is effective proclaiming herself as a friend to certain sea creatures as she is proclaiming to be a woman in love. A girl and a woman in one character that makes it hard for us to see her as another character other than Mari Mar.

Her supposed innocence betrays the flame inside her, which keeps on getting bigger because of unconditional passion for Sergio. She makes Mari Mar a must–watch because she is bedazzling both physically and acting-wise. How come a young actress this effective was allowed to exist lightly under–wings the afternoon teleseryes and minor roles?

Yes it helped that GMA placed high–premium hype on Marian and that she seemed to fit the requirements of a pawn to get back against a lost Angel Locsin. But all that’s out of the question the moment she appeared as Mari Mar on TV. It is one thing to throw burning coals of publicity on an impending TV debut and pumping the volume to max–mode as far as supposed ‘chemistry’ is concerned; but it’s another thing to see it work and be sustained.

"Mari Mar" just works by being engaging and funny (thanks to the original plot–line that solicits natural viewers’ hoook). And by the trend of the series, it seems sustainable.

  • TV Ratings (Aug. 31–Sept. 2): "Showbiz Central" beats "The Buzz" again

After lagging behind miserably for a good number of weeks, GMA-7's Takeshi's Castle is starting to show signs of life particularly last Friday, August 31, after it registered an impressive 17 percent rating. But it is still not enough to overturn rival Game KNB? which tallied 19.3 percent.

This is according to the recent survey conducted by AGB Nielsen Philippines among Mega Manila households last August 31 to September 2.

Saturday, September 1, however turned out to be a major upset as Takeshi's Castle grabbed the upper hand with a 16.4 percent clip compared to Edu Manzano's game show, which posted a 10.7 percent rating.

The two controversial noontime shows, meanwhile, are locked up in a much tighter battle following the wake of Wowowee's Willie Revillame and Eat Bulaga's Joey de Leon's personal and professional conflict.

Friday (Aug. 31) saw Eat Bulaga! hanging on to the lead with a 23.6 percent performance while Wowowee trailed closely with a 22.1 percent rating.

Eat Bulaga! still emerged victorious Saturday (Sept. 1) with 23.4 percent rating while Wowowee was almost a hairline away from pulling off a coup with a 23.2 percent rating to close the week.

Many experts believe that the ongoing feud between Joey and Willie helped greatly in bolstering the stocks of both shows, particularly in Wowowee's case as it managed to trim down considerably its rival's lead, most notably on a weekend.

Friday primetime was dominated by GMA-7 as five of its shows landed in the Top 5. Marimar led the pack with a walloping 37.2 percent rating. Mga Mata ni Anghelita, meanwhile, regained supremacy in its timeslot as it posted a 36 percent rating. Also in the Top 5 are 24 Oras, Impostora, and Jumong.

Kokey posted a 28.6 percent rating to lead all ABS-CBN primetime programs. Judy Ann Santos's Ysabella followed with 27.4 percent while the last episode of Claudine Barretto and Piolo Pascual's Walang Kapalit notched the No. 8 spot overall with 26.4 percent.

Startalk remained untouched as it once again dominated over its counterpart Entertainment Live with a comfortable 16.9 percent rating against the latter's decent 13.9 percent.

Celebrity Duets continues to gain ground as it gathered a 25.4 percent rating. Frederick Peralta bowed out of the competition last Saturday, a week after beauty queen Ana Theresa Licaros became the show's first casualty.

Typical of a Sunday, daytime viewing started slow before picking up at around late afternoon all the way to early evening yesterday, September 2. Kap's Amazing Stories once again reigned with 22.6 percent followed by Showbiz Central with its 17 percent showing.

This is the third consecutive week that Showbiz Central edged out its rival, The Buzz, which posted a 12.5 percent rating.

Paolo Bediones's Tok! Tok! Tok! Isang Milyon Pasok still leads the Sunday primetime race with 28.4 percent. Mel & Joey occupied the No. 2 spot with 27. 2 percent followed by Korina Sanchez's Rated K with 20.2 percent.

At the top of his game
    Article posted September 2, 2007

With his new hot and super tan look, Dingdong Dantes is currently the hottest man alive. We all know him now as the sizzling Sergio on Marimar. How did he go from wholesome to hot overnight? Text by Alula Love M. Dela Cruz. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio.

    The Change

Sergio is probably Dingdong’s most widely recognized role to date. The twenty seven year old actor was also surprised with his own transformation. “Nagpapahaba talaga ako ng buhok, but they had to cut it and color it, huwag niyo na lang tawanan”, he jokingly said when we asked him about his clean bad-boy hairdo.

The transformation doesn’t stop there. His once tisoy looks is now replaced with a firm and tanned body, “Kailangan magpa-tan eh, tapos Direk Joyce wants me to loose more weight para sa camera.”

The physical attributes are not just the only things Dingdong changed. He has also adjusted his priorities. “Right now I’d like to concentrate on acting muna.”

He revealed that as much as he love to direct films and TV shows, this year he plans on prioritizing his acting career. Being a well-rounded person is Dindong’s edge amongst other actors. His acting style which is very unique that it makes him a believable actor in any role that he plays. It’s no wonder that he is such a hit in Sergio's sexy skin.

    Sergio’s pereception

Being Sergio isn’t just all about the attitude but also keeping a tight relationship with your co-actors and directors. Dingdong attributes his success to the people he works with in MariMar, “Si Direk Joyce nakatrabaho ko na siya sa Sorry My love, nagiging kabigan, ngayon na rekindle yung friendship.” Aside from being buds with the director Dingdong also respects the unique style that Direk Joyce Bernal is implementing on the show, “You can deliver better lalo na kung trusted mo yung mga kasama mo.”

Director Joyce Bernal isn’t just the only person Dingdong is rekindling his friendship with. Almost everyone in the cast has worked with Dingdong in a show or movie, “Si Katrina, nakasama ko na siya sa Atlantika.

The only new actress Dingdong is working with is none other than MariMar herself, “I’m really surprised kasi di natin aakalain na magiging ganoon siya.” Dingdong elaborates this statement by saying that Marian is such a good actress that she makes every character believebale, “I mean we saw her before sa TV shows niya, iba yung projection niya and now we see her in MariMar parang wala kang iisipin na she was associated with another character before.”

With a skyrocketing career, a hit show, a hot leading lady and that sizzling new look, it's no surprise that Dingdong is at the top of his game winning the hearts of a new breed of fans guaranteed to support him way after MariMar is over.

  • September 3 to 7, 2007: Angelika’s Ploys
    Article posted September 3, 2007

Angelika had begun making MariMar’s life at Villa Santibañez as horrible as possible. After embarrassing both MariMar and Sergio at a reception party, Angelika made sure MariMar would make Sergio angry by sending the naïve young woman to an important closed-door meeting to humiliate Sergio further.

Renato had started to catch on to Angelika’s moves. And when Nicandro reported to him that he saw Angelika kiss Sergio on the lips -- he hired a bodyguard who will keep an eye on Angelika at all times.

MariMar and Sergio also had their first major fight, causing the former to run away from the Villa. Sergio ran after her, and they eventually make up. Had Sergio finally fallen for MariMar? When does pretending end and real love begin for the two?

Meanwhile, Angelika set another obstacle against Sergio and MariMar’s relationship by instating Inocencia as Sergio’s new secretary. Unbeknownst to Sergio and Renato, Angelika wanted Inocencia to lure Sergio from MariMar’s arms.

What new schemes will Angelika hatch this week as Sergio and MariMar return to the villa? Feel the MariMar fever every weeknight after the magical adventures on Mga Mata ni Anghelita.

"Sabi ko, ?you're so sexy.'

    By: Nitz Miralles

“It’s like having a child when I was 20 years old.

    * * *

Marian Rivera is Manual Magazine's Covergirl for October

Move over Angelica Panganiban, Ehra Madrigal, Katrina Halili and Wendy Valdez. A new covergirl will sizzle this October as GMA's next big star Marian "Marimar"? Rivera is gracing the cover of Manual magazine. Editor-in-chief RJ Ledesma said that the difference between Marian and the typical covergirls is that she exudes both the "sexiness"? and "class" at the same time.

After ng take, magkahiwalay naming nakatsikahan sina Marian at Katrina.

Masarap at magaan daw katrabaho ang aktor and the rest of the cast ng "Marimar."

No pork, no beef at fish lang ang kinakain niya.

    No restrictions

After ng take, gusto naming panoorin agad.

    Merry Marian

I teased Marian Rivera: “Now that you’ve made it big as Marimar, I’m sure Mark Herras regrets letting you slip away?”

Their romance got thwarted because Marian found out that Mark was still in love with Jennylyn Mercado at that time. She flipped her hair and pouted. “Ewan ko kay Mark (laughter)!”

I could sense some sarcasm in her tone. But all that is behind her now. If Mark has any plans of trying to win Marian back, he’d have to queue up and wait for
