It depends.

I'm no expert in nitrous oxide but I think it has something to do with the temperature. What nitrous oxide does is basically create a bigger explosion in your engine than normal. A bigger explosion means more power, however it can put more strain on your car's parts such as the intake and exhaust manifolds because they're not designed to cope with it.

It is not nitrous that destroys engines but the lack of fuel (running lean) and the components of the engine itself that determine when damage will occur. That is why it is vitally important to make sure you have done the proper research and performance modifications to your car prior to injecting nitrous into your engine.

Any modification that will make your engine run beyond the manufacturers specification can potentially ruin your engine or at the least shorten its rated lifespan.

nitrous can ruin your engine if it is not installed properly. if you put too much gas without adding the proper amount of fuel, detonation would occur. too much oxygen from the NO2 and too little fuel would still combust but with a very high temperature unsuitable to your car's pistons and cylinders.
