‘Review Philippines’ and ‘Hot Seat’ now on Q!

By WALDEN SADIRI

In Q-11’s bid to win over the A, B and higher C market with its arsenal of quality shows, it now has fortified its news and public affairs programs with the inclusion of two GMA Pinoy TV shows – "Review Philippines" and "Hot Seat" which will debut on Aug. 11 and Aug. 12, respectively.

Both "Review Philippines" and "Hot Seat" started airing on GMA Pinoy TV, the global channel of GMA Network last June 2005 for the former and July 27, 2006 for the latter show. Catering to the Filipinos living abroad, including the Overseas Filipino Workers, the said programs have received quite a following. It was only after Q-11 tweaked its shows for a higher market that the two shows were deemed a perfect fit for the network.

Lee Escudero, head of Regional TV and AVP for Expansion, News and Public Affairs intimated the idea of airing "Review Philippines" and "Hot Seat" to the network’s CEO and President Atty. Felipe Gozun and COO Jimmy Duavit who both agreed that Q11’s growing and expanding audience will appreciate the said programs.

She explained that "Review Philippines" fits the lifestyle of busy people since it is a wrap-up or round–up of all the important news for the week on a Saturday. Their objectives since they began airing on GMA Pinoy TV have always been to provide comprehensive reporting of significant news stories in the country for the week, to promote nationalistic pride and optimism through inspiring stories and features and to provide indepth understanding of current issues through short and analytical one–on–one interviews.

"Review Philippines" is anchored by Mike Enriquez, one of the country’s renowned broadcast journalists and also the anchor of the No. 1 news program in the country, "24 Oras. " What sets "Review Philippines" apart from Mike Enriquez’ "24 Oras" and "Imbestigador" is that it is a weekly English news round–up!

"It will be a Mike Enriquez you’ve never seen and heard before. And this is not all about hard news only," explained Lee Escudero. "As you all know Mike Enriquez started out as a disc jockey, as Baby Michael, and he is really excellent in English!"

She also pointed out that since the Philippines is tagged as the "Sunshine Capital for Call Centers," it is ironic not to have an English newscast with a veteran broadcaster. That is why they felt that "Review Philippines" was compatible with QTV-11.

"Review Philippines" is divided into different segments – from pertinent issues to light materials. The interesting segments are "Burning Issue" which touches on political, controversial issues and current events, so expect the top controversial newsmaker for the week to be the subject; "ChitChat" which is a light-feature oriented segment that will have celebrities, even socialites as guests like rising actress Marian Rivera who’s playing "Marimar," GMA Network’s mosy ambitious soap opera to date. Other noteworthy segments are "Reviewing History," week’s historical event, people and places, trivia bits on "Did You Know?" feature stories from the regions on "Around the Philippines," success stories on "Good News" and "Pinoy Exchange" which is about business and economy of the Philippines.

"It’s simply like a multi-vitamin of news for the Filipinos," Lee exclaimed.

Another esteemed veteran broadcast journalist, Jessica Soho, returns to her roots with the 50-minute talk show "Hot Seat."

One of the country’s best investigative reporters, Ms. Soho (also GMA Network’s VP for News in GMA News and Public Affairs and Q-11) in "Hot Seat" will offer Qviewers dynamic, informative and interactive discussions of various topics on current political events, economics, socio-cultural events and even the field of entertainment. Short segments will have backgrounders on the issues to be tackled, facts and figures relevant to the topic, interview with analyst by experts and even case studies.

"Hot Seat" contains "Sabi Nila, Buwelta Ng Iba" which is a man-on–the-street interview, "Mga Isyung Dapat Tutukan" which are news stories viewers can comment on and "Barometro" which are all about viewers reactions, questions or opinions on "Hot Seat" episodes.

Insiders from "Hot Seat" pointed out that their vision is to present a very special and unique Public Affairs program even if it’s in a traditional talk show format. Topics presented would always have ample space for discussion and exchange of relevant information. Such format would open the show for Qviewers to listen and voice out their views regarding the topics for the each episodes.

Topics though for "Hot Seat" will focus on stories that pushes "optimism." This is prompted by the International Programming’s report that subscribers have been warmer and more accepting of feel-good "Hot Seat" episodes in the past.

"Hot Seat" brings back the investigative Jessica Soho. Since she started, her TV persona has evolved and her current shows like Q’s "Sana’y Muling Makapiling" and "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho" have shown a softer side of the broadcast journalist.

"Even with those shows, Jessica has still maintained her investigative persona as she still delves deep into issues like the problems of economy, military, health issues, etcetera," Lee explained.

Unlike her past shows like "I-Witness," "Brigada" and "Jessica Soho Reports" which were all investigative and documentary types of reporting, "Hot Seats" has her seated throughout the whole show displaying her prowess in interviewing her guests and handling interactions among her guests and her Q-viewers.

After their debut in Q, what’s in the works for "Review Philippines" and "Hot Seat" is their inclusion in the website of GMA News and Public Affairs!

People tend to underestimate Mike Enriquez, when actually he's a graduate of La Salle and is very fluent in English. We just don't see him use it on TV since he became popular with his style in Filipino.

Sana di basta basta nanlalait at sarcastic yung iba dito. Sabi nga, di lahat nadadaan sa gandang lalaki.:bop:
  • GMA PTV shows a different Mike Enriquez dahil sa REVIEW PHILIPPINES. He's also good in this one.
