Once a church group dapples with politics, it can no longer lay claim to be serving for the Lord. It had "stained itself" with the worldliness of human governance, and should rather stop its ministering than continuing with it, for it would only bring shame to God.

El Shaddai asks 18 Senate bets to join rally
    By Aurea Calica
    The Philippine Star 05/12/2007

    http://www.philstar.com/philstar/NEWS200705120410.htm

ILOILO CITY - Eighteen senatorial candidates were invited by the El Shaddai to attend its rally today at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila and all of them were, in one way or another, assured of support by the religious movement.

Sources from both the opposition and the administration said the 18 bets from Team Unity, Genuine Opposition, and Ang Kapatiran, as well as independents would attend the rally, but the actual endorsement by El Shaddai leader Bro. Mike Velarde would be known only through "body language."

The STAR earlier reported that El Shaddai would endorse five candidates from TU, five from GO and two independent candidates. The report had sown confusion among candidates because at least seven TU bets had been invited to the El Shaddai rally.

Most of them felt that there was no reason to be invited if they would not be supported by the group.

The sources said no one among the 18 could actually be sure of the 12 names El Shaddai would carry.

Asked whether candidates gave "donations" or entered into a commitment with El Shaddai, the sources said there was no need to do so.

But they admitted some of the bets openly supported the Buhay party-list group of El Shaddai which has Velarde’s son Rene as nominee.

"But we see that as a ‘wise’ move on the part of Bro. Mike, to let his followers see the candidates and decide for themselves," the sources said.

The 18 candidates invited were Edgardo Angara, Mike Defensor, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Vicente Sotto III, Ralph Recto and Prospero Pichay of TU; Loren Legarda, Manuel Villar Jr., Francis Escudero, Panfilo Lacson, Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, Aquilino Pimentel III and Sonia Roco of GO; independent candidates Gregorio Honasan and Francis Pangilinan; and Martin Bautista and Adrian Sison of Ang Kapatiran. TU candidate Vicente Sotto III said he was surprised to see that his name was not among those to be supported by El Shaddai. – With Delon Porcalla

El Shaddai leader bares his ‘Chosen 12’

MANILA, Philippines -- El Shaddai leader Brother Mike Velarde on Saturday endorsed five candidates from Team Unity, five from the Genuine Opposition, and two independents.

TU candidates Edgardo Angara, Prospero Pichay, Joker Arroyo, Mike Defensor, and Migz Zubiri; GO’s Loren Legarda, Francis Escudero, Manuel Villar, Panfilo Lacson, and Benigno Aquino III; and independents Gregorio Honasan and Francis Pangilinan got the coveted nod of the influential leader of the Catholic charismatic group which claims up to five million members.

Velarde told the Inquirer in an interview that he would endorse his 5-5-2 slate during a big El Shaddai prayer rally scheduled tonight, Saturday night, at Rizal Park. He would not mention names, he said, but would do it by giving out obvious clues.

"The 5-5-2 will easily be discerned by our members through my body language," Velarde said.

While he revealed his chosen 12, Velarde actually endorsed a total of 20 candidates from whom El Shaddai members can choose. He said he wanted to give his members wider latitude in making their own choices of who deserve to be in the Senate.

El Shaddai sample ballots listing an 8-8-4 for TU, GO, and independent candidates will be distributed to members during the rally which organizers said will bring together as many as 300,000 people.

Aside from those in Velarde’s 5-5-2, the longer list includes Vicente Sotto III, Ralph Recto, and Cesar Montano from TU; Sonia Roco, Aquilino Pimentel III, and Antonio Trillanes from GO and independents Martin Bautista and Adrian Sison.

Velarde earlier said he chose the candidates based on the qualities of “Buhay,” meaning bravery, unwavering principle, honesty, ability, and being Yahweh- or God-fearing. Buhay is also the name of the El Shaddai party-list group that Velarde’s son heads.

The 12 senatorial candidates chosen by Velarde supposedly gave their commitment to carry the Buhay party-list group in their own sample ballots.

Velarde said the El Shaddai rally last night was called to pray for credible and honest elections.

"The cloud of doubt over the 2004 (election) still lingers and that should be erased,” Velarde said.

Bro. Mike names 21 Senate bets for followers to choose from

El Shaddai leader Bro. Mike Velarde last night left his flock to decide who to vote from among 21 senatorial candidates listed in sample ballots distributed during the Catholic charismatic group’s prayer rally last night.

Listed were eight bets each from Team Unity (TU) and Genuine Opposition (GO), two independents and three others from the Kapatiran party.

Velarde said he would not endorse 12 candidates, as earlier rumored, and would give El Shaddai followers the free hand to choose from among the 21 bets.

Endorsed from the TU slate were Edgardo Angara, Prospero Pichay, Mike Defensor, Joker Arroyo, Miguel Zubiri, Tito Sotto, Ralph Recto and Cesar Montano, and from GO, Loren Legarda, Chiz Escudero, Manny Villar, Panfilo Lacson, Noynoy Aquino, Koko Pimentel, Sonia Roco and Antonio Trillanes.

Independents Kiko Pangilinan and Gringo Honasan and Kapatiran candidates Adrian Sison, Martin Bautista and Zosimo Paredes completed the list.

“I will not endorse 12 candidates tonight; I will not impose my choice. Remember it is not good to vote 12-0 because we need check and balance even in the Senate,” Velarde said.

He advised his followers though to choose five bets each from TU and GO and two independent candidates.

He said wanted representations from the different tickets, likening it to a basketball game.

El Shaddai printed 10 million sample ballots with the names of the 21 candidates.

Velarde reminded his followers their right to vote and their power to choose their leaders by voting.

He also appealed to President Arroyo, the Commission on Elections and all the candidates “to make the elections acceptable and credible to everyone.”

“Our decision will have a long-term effect; think of the effect,” he said.

Except for Trillanes and the three Kapatiran bets, all of those named in the sample ballots attended the prayer rally.

Comelec to end Buhay factions’ feud over House seats

    http://www.gmanews.tv/story/45216/Comelec-to-end-Buhay-factions-feud-over-House-seats

The ongoing feud between two groups of nominees of the El Shaddai-backed Buhay party-list will be resolved by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr said the poll body is set to release its ruling on which Buhay faction will get three seats at the House of Representatives.

“We already have a resolution wherein we have resolved which of them will be recognized as (Buhay) nominees)," Abalos told reporters Tuesday at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

The pro-life group has submitted to the Comelec a total of 10 nominees or five from each faction.

The first set of Buhay nominees are composed of Hans Christian Señeres, son of former United Arab Emirates Ambassador Roy Señeres, Hermenegildo Dumlao, Antonio Bautista, Victor Pablo Trinidad, and Eduardo Solangon Jr.

The second faction of nominees on the other hand is headed by Rene Velarde, son of El Shaddai founder Bro.Mike Velarde. His co-nominees are Ma. Carissa Coscolluela, William Irwin Tieng, Melchor Monsod, and Teresita Villarama.

Abalos refused to divulge the content of the resolution pending its promulgation. “Let’s just wait for the resolution," he said.

It is not clear why the Comelec allowed Buhay's submission two sets of nominees when the maximum number of seats that a party-list can place in Congress is only three. - GMANews.TV

‘Iglesia votes made Shaddai party-list win’

    http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/nation/view_article.php?article_id=70330

    By Christian V. Esguerra
    Inquirer
Last updated 01:56am (Mla time) 06/09/2007

MANILA, Philippines—Who really delivered the votes for Buhay?

Two warring factions of the pro-life party-list group, identified with the El Shaddai Catholic charismatic cult, are grabbing credit for Buhay’s strong showing in the May party-list elections.

Of the 10 party-list organizations claiming victory, only Buhay is assured of getting three seats in the next 14th Congress.

Buhay Rep. Hans Christian Señeres yesterday said it was a misconception that evangelist Mike Velarde and his legion of El Shaddai believers had generated the votes for the party-list group.

“It’s not true. There’s so much trickery, so much deception going on,” he said.

“I was the one who climbed mountains and crossed rivers while they were out dancing on TV,” he said.

Señeres claimed it was his family, backed by the solid Iglesia Ni Cristo vote, that helped propel Buhay into the front ranks of party-list groups qualified to seat their representatives in Congress.

    No El Shaddai vote

At most, he said the Velarde-led El Shaddai may have delivered only 300,000 of Buhay’s more than one million votes.

“We should remember that in 1998 when El Shaddai supported two party-list groups, each of them got only 1,000 to 2,000 votes from El Shaddai,” Señeres said.

“So there’s really no such thing as an El Shaddai command vote,” he said.

Mel Robles, an El Shaddai leader who heads the Light Rail Transit Authority, countered: “You don’t exaggerate the obvious. Everybody knows who delivered the votes for Buhay.”

Señeres, 30, is in a bitter struggle with the Robles faction over who has the right to assign Buhay’s nominees for Congress. The case is now with the Commission on Elections.

    Insulted

Robles, who headed Buhay before being appointed to the LRTA, earlier submitted a list of five nominees, that initially included Señeres at the tail end.

Feeling “insulted,” Señeres, being secretary general and “acting” president of the group, countered with a list of his own.

Señeres said Robles’ move was “treacherous.” He said he was never informed of the Robles list until he was told of it by an employee who had seen a copy.

“I was out campaigning all over Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and Hong Kong not knowing that I had been removed from the list,” he said.

To Señeres’ claim of campaigning all over, Robles said: “Perhaps he campaigned in the mountains where nobody could see him. But anyway, we have a list of all those who voted and we’ll know how many came from the mountains.”

    Against Buhay spirit

Señeres also questioned Robles’ choice of nominees to join incumbent Buhay Rep. Rene Velarde, the son of the El Shaddai leader. They are Maria Coscolluela, Irwin Tieng, Melchor Monsod and Tessie Villarama.

Señeres said Coscolluela used to work for the Population Commission, a bitter enemy of pro-life groups, before joining Sen. Richard Gordon’s staff.

He said Villarama was the wife of Wilfrido Villarama, a former congressman who was among the authors of the Reproductive Health Bill, or HB 4110.

Señeres said the bill, which provides for P20-million government funding for contraceptives like condoms and intra-uterine devices, was “against the spirit of Buhay.”

Señeres’ father, Roy Señeres, who used to head the National Labor Relations Commission, said Tieng was the son of a very wealthy Chinese friend of Mike Velarde.

Robles said his choice of nominees was “okay. We’re just happy that by topping the [party-list] elections, Buhay has proven that the Philippines is still pro-life.”

Thankful ako kay God for my parents, kahit tryk driver at dh si mama from elementary to College namin ni ate sa prestigous school kami nakagraduate! Love lots..
