Leftwing solons ordered killings of Akbayan members

MANILA, Philippines -- A self-confessed triggerman in the alleged New People’s Army purgings in Bongabong, Nueva Ecija, came out on Friday and claimed that Bayan Muna Representative Satur Ocampo had congratulated him for a "job well done."

Gunman Julie Flores Sinohin appeared with the two widows, Madelyn Felipe and Isabelita Bayudang, and Cleotilde Aguilar-Peralta -- their faces covered with bandannas and shades -- at a press con in Ermita, Manila.

Felipe and Bayudang filed on March 16 a disqualification case against party-lists Bayan Muna, Gabriela and Anakpawis at the Commission on Elections. The widows said that with the additional testimonies of Sinohin, Peralta-Aguilar and a Jose Avila Princillo, the disqualification case against the party-lists "strengthened."

Sinohin, who said he was integrated into the rebel group in 1999, said he and other comrades were ordered to "erase" Akbayan supporters Danilo Felipe and Carlito Bayudang -- the widows' husbands -- by Bayan Muna partylist representatives Ocampo and Teodoro Casiño, Gabriela Representative Liza Maza and Anakpawis Representative Rafael Mariano.

Another victim supposedly silenced by Sinohin was Jimmy Peralta, who was mistaken for his brother Ricardo Peralta, another active community organizer of Akbayan.

As a member of the NPA's close-in security group guarding a "pulong" (meeting) in 2001, Sinohin said he overheard Ocampo and others saying "all rebel returnees who were supporting Akbayan must be removed."

"Nakita at narinig ko lang po yung pag-uutos, kasi di naman po pwedeng sumali yung security sa pagpupulong (I only saw and heard the orders, because as part of the security, I can't join the meeting)," he clarified.

In the gatherings that followed, Sinohin said the leftist leaders ordered to speed up the killings and to form the group of assailants. The murders were ordered, he said, because the targets hindered Bayan Muna's campaign in the 2001 elections.

Sinohin said Danilo Felipe was the first one he killed in February 2001, followed by Carlito Bayudang in 2004, and Ricardo Peralta, nephew of Peralta-Aguilar.

Casiño had vehemently denied the charges and slapped a perjury and libel case on March 26 against the group for "defaming him and the party-list Bayan Muna."

He said his colleague Ocampo would have filed the same case but could not do so due to his detention at the Manila Police District headquarters for another allegation.

Isabelita Bayudang and Madelyn Felipe alleged that in 1998 and 2001, they received threats from party-list groups Bayan Muna, Anakpawis and Gabriela for supporting Akbayan in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija, and that their husbands would be killed by armed members if they did not withdraw their support.

In his affidavit, Casiño countered that Bayan Muna was not yet in existence in 1998, adding that Comelec records would show the party-list was registered in February 2001. He also said Anakpawis and Gabriela were not yet conceived as partylist groups in 2001, while Bayan Muna also did not have armed members.

"The statement is so general and is intended more to destroy the good name of Bayan Muna, Anakpawis and Gabriela for political reasons," he stated.

Bayan Muna topped the most recent Social Weather Station survey for partylists, but Bayudang said this was exactly the reason why they came out.

"The people are being fooled by these partylists, which are fronts of the CPP-NPA. They just added 'Muna' to Bayan, which is known for being associated with Joma (Jose Maria Sison)," she said in Filipino.

Casiño retorted that there was nothing wrong in using for their party-list the word "Bayan," which also happens to be used by Akbayan.

Bayudang later admitted that there were discrepancies in the dates cited on their affidavits but attributed the lapses to her “confused” state as she was still affected by her husband's death.

But the inconsistencies, Casiño said, were fatal to their case. "If they don't change their affidavits, and as far as I know they haven't, it would be defective," he said in Filipino.

Still, Bayudang insisted that Casiño and his group should answer their accusations and not engage in legal maneuvers such as the filing of the perjury and libel case.

Casiño countered that the libel and perjury cases were their legal recourse against persons who made careless statements against them. He said the witnesses recently dropped their names from the Comelec disqualification case, thus weakening their case.

"Why did they drop our names if they were convinced that we did it? If they removed our names, how can they prove that the partylists were engaged in illegal acts?" he said. "If they have nothing new to say, they should just answer the perjury case we filed against them."

The four witnesses, who said they were "afraid for their lives," had yet to show their faces to the public. They also claimed that there was no group financing them in their case against the militant party-list groups.
