The first 'do' is to consult an ENT specialist. Tinnitus can be caused by a wide variety of things like ear infections, earwax accumulations, tumors (like acoustic neuromas), noise-induced hearing loss, etc. Your doctor will be the one to rule out all these causes by doing examinations, etc.

On a related note, I'd like to point out that with the popularity of digital audio players nowadays, the incidence of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is on the rise. You should always keep your DAP volume at a moderate level and NEVER attempt to drown out loud noises by setting the volume louder. If you are in a noisy environment and wish to drown out the noise, you must invest in a pair of in-ear monitors (IEM), also known as canalphones. IEMs block out ambient noise, allowing you to use much lower volumes for drowning out the noise compared to open air (the usual kind) of earphones. Obviously, IEMs should never be used in environments where awareness of sounds around you is vital for your safety (crossing streets, riding a bicycle, etc.).

With regards to the ears, any headphones (regardless of make/model/size/whatever) shouldn't cover the ear for more than 2 hours. It promotes bacterial growth in the ear.

I am suffering from tinnitus for 3 years now, well at least 3 years, I think my ears started ringing way before then but it was on and off then. For the past 3 years, there has been a constant ringing/ buzzing in both my ears and it never goes away (sound only becomes softer or louder). I have consulted with an ear specialist in the U.S. but the doctor told me that 'there is no medical cure for tinnitus'. He said I can probably try alternative medication like acupuncture.
Is there anything else I can try to at least alleviate if not completely cure me of this ailment? :hopeless:

in my opinion, everyone experiences tinnitus once in a while, because ironically tinnitus seems to follow in the absence of sound - total silence. it just depends on how we deal with it. just ignore it. apparently, the more you listen to it (to nothingness), the more you hear it.
it won't go away unless you divert your attention and focus.
do something to distract yourself from unconsciously listening to it. don't let silence take over, or it can be very defeaning.
by the way, i'm not a doctor.

my partner has ringing in his ears... symptomatic... mayron din naman siyang teratoma on the left side of his head... behind the eyes... eniway, since constant ang ringing and he would hear it almost everynight that prevents him from sleeping - we consulted the ear doctor... ang prescription lang sa kanya ay sound spa - with nature sounds... habang natutulog, sabayan lang ng sound of nature Like - raining, sound of summer night, thunder and the like... para ma-cover-up ang ringing of the ears... okay naman siya.... nakakatulog na ulit siya ng medyo maayos

(pronounced as ti-NIGHT-us or TIN-i-tus).ito kasi ang problema ko ngayon.

I have this too.... hmmm... since 6 yrs old. I'm 23 now.
Psychologically, it's very painful. pero may cure ako diyan.
I cover my nose (normally i do not), then inhale hard.
It's gone, but after a few minutes (or when I yawn) it will come back.
But since I have this for many years now, it seems like I'm not conscious if it comes back (after inhaling hard).
The downfall of it, i have a slight hearing loss in my left ear.
When I was a kid, it was very painful. It's like a needle is inside my ears. I often cry nonstop. When I had my checkup with the doctor, he sprayed some medicine through my nostrils and it smells like alcohol. It's pretty effective, the pain is gone yet Tinnitus is still there.

Can anyone help or suggest for home remedies for tinnitus (the buzzing or ringing of the ears)..or..has anyone experienced going thru this problem? What did you do?

For the past two days, my ears have been buzzing which is preventing me from having a good nights sleep. I haven't had a good nights sleep in two days because of the sounds. I have to sleep with the tv noise on, just to try to go to sleep.

I came to this pex forum, because perhaps there are some filipinos out there who know of a filipinohome remedy or filipino herbs that I can use to help out for tinnitus.

During the past couple of days, I've been googling on several american websites on tinnitus. Some have suggested that drinking apple cider vinegar helps with tinnitus. I have been the drinking apple cider vinegar for the past 2 days now. Another website also said that taking gingko biloba helps with tinnitus, too. I haven't tried the gingko biloba yet, but perhaps I'll try to buy some at our local drugstore and give it a try. I got these info from different american websites. Now, I'm curious to see what the filipinos suggest and if there are any filipino remedies or filipino herbs to help out with tinnitus.

Perhaps there are nurses reading this or those who are in the medical field here who have heard of tinnitus. I would appreciate any suggestions on what I can do. I know that going to the ENT doctor would be best thing to do. But, I was wondering if I can do something at home first (such as home remedies/herbs) to help out with the tinnitus, before going to the doctor.

Thank you and I'd appreciate any suggestions!

nagkaroon din ako ng ganyang problem what i do is turn on the radio and listen to a music so i wouldn't hear the buzzing noise after a long time i get used to it but once in awhile it comes back and i ignore it.

as i remember right, the ears has two nerves which affect hearing and balance. with tinnitus, sometimes, one of the nerves is affected with the fluid in the ear kaya any form of pressure gaya sa airplane or plain swimming affects it. It is usually more common sa may edad and comes with complaints of lost of balance. I dont know kung may gamot pero supportive yan eh. I dont know about Gingko pero baka reseta lang nya yan alam mo na para may nareseta. hehe

it would be best to seek an otorhinolaryngologist (ENT) first before taking any medications.
