Scientists decode ancient astral computer! Greeks Got it!

what a discovery!!., Greeks were in 500-600 BC before Christ. upssss to be politically correct: BCE-Before Common Era, not to offend any religions.
Antikythera Mechanism: World's oldest computer?

A timeshift in the history of astronomy

IF THE Antikythera Mechanism turns out to have been a machine for showing the movements of the planets around the sun, it would greatly alter our understanding of the history of astronomy.

Although at least one Greek thinker posited a heliocentric view of the solar system, the dominant view at the time was Aristotle's - that the Earth was the centre of the universe and that everything rotated around it in perfect, circular orbits.

It was not until 1,400 years later that Copernicus and Galileo conclusively proved the heliocentric view, which greatly altered man's understanding of his importance and position in the universe.

Their work was met with stern resistance, as the Church believed the Aristotlean view - which put humanity at the centre of the cosmos - was integral to man's direct relation to God.

Researchers are now searching for clues that the Antikythera Mechanism might have been governed by heliocentric principles. If they are successful, it would suggest the heliocentric world-view was more accepted by the Greeks than thought.

  • much much more value than monaliza, was discoverd by pro diver, and came accross the wreckage in 1901, whoooooooooaaaa.... wonder if it was valued at that time that is was very significant piece of history.

Some researchers believe the machine might have been among treasure looted from Rhodes that was en route to Rome for a celebration staged by Julius Caesar.

One of the remaining mysteries is why the Greek technology invented for the machine seemed to disappear. No other civilisation is believed to have created anything as complex for another 1000 years.

Bronze was often recycled in the period the device was made, so many artefacts from that time were melted down and erased from the archaeological record. The fateful sinking of the ship carrying the Antikythera Mechanism may have inadvertently preserved it.

Julius Caesar was the first "caesar" or sort of like a king, emperor.

    On to the animations!
The Antikythera Mechanism was discovered in a wreck near the island of Antikythera (hence its name). A detailed description of the device, which is considered the first computer ever made, is given in a historical article of Derek da Solla Price, who devoted most of his life in deciphering its workings.

  • ................................................................
  • you mean the first computer is not the abacus?
  • With this kind of discovery, it shows that the greeks had a higher technical skill to make such a mechanism than previously known.

if they can find out that the mechanism placed the sun at the center of the model with all the planets, including earth, revolving around it, it would prove that the greeks had a heliocentric model of space. In Europe, this concept was not postulated until the time of copernicus and Kepler possibly 1400 years after this mechanism was supposedly created.

This technology and astronomical knowledge may have been lost in time due to other belief system that came into power, eg. Roman religion followed by Christianity.

these kind of informations may have been disposed of or discounted as we now no longer belief in greek mythology, there is an old saying that, “ Don’t throw the baby out with bathwater”.

We are not for sure what happened with other mechanism like this, they could have been destroyed or allowed to fall apart over time because they didn’t match the beliefs of Christianity with the earth as the center of the solar system.

When Christianity came thru the Mediterranean region they got rid of old greek and roman statues of Gods, which is similar to when Christianity was introduced to new cultures, they removed old customs and traditions that competed with the teaching of Christianity.

Not many historians are happy about it because they lost the change of history in many cultures. How much knowledge and informations has been lost over time because it didn’t fit the contemporary beliefs of an age.

this is a good example of lost history in many cultures, little informations were left for us to record, the best records that we have are from maori's, probably they were in the other side of the world that christianity did'n't spread in their territory. *okay* . apparently for many cultures like philippines, we have little information of the histtory of our own indeginious.

tribal tattooes were status symbol and also part of heritage and their identification. There were many tribal traditions that were wipe out becuase of the spread of christianity.
