The roman catholic church is a necessary evil

While atheists/agnostics continue to criticize the church and its dogma, I guess it's best to give them their due. At least the rcc allows a certain degree of autonomy under the church wherein more freedoms are observed unlike in islam wherein individual freedoms are clearly a lot more curtailed.
I guess we just don't realize what would happen if the RCC suddenly lost its clout to the "other" side.

sorry, but I can't agree with you there. existence, yes. necessity - let alone gratitude - NO. historically, the Church is the reason why the "other side" exists. if we'd lived before the Enlightenment, the practices of the Catholic Church would be indistinguishable from Islamic fundamentalism. giving the Church credit for the freedom many honest men and women died fighting for is like congratulating a murderer for getting caught. it's a cliche, but, those who forget the lessons of history...0

sorry if i happened to miss any cues, i don't frequent the RoT forum. i have no idea what the "other side" is. but i will say this:
EVERY religion is a necessary evil. people need something to believe in, a community to belong to, and every faith provides that. religion has a million uses, but social organization isn't the most pressing among them - emotional fulfillment, the need to have faith in the unexplainable, the need to feel like everything is part of a "plan" and everything is going to be okay, is religion's very first purpose.
having said this, i slide back into avoiding relatives until the pacquiao-morales match...0 -
as our good ol' friend David Lettermen once said:
"The Catholic Church is the biggest crime syndicate of them all"
The reason why the world cannot attain peace is that there are people who hate a particular group of people. Some people hate the Jews, no matter what they do. Some people hate blacks. And now, some people like this Letterman person hates the Catholics. These people are the ones we should blame for never ending war, hate crimes and discriminations based on ethnic, cultural and religious background.0 -
Ika nga ni Nigel Powers, "There are only two things I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures... and the Dutch."0

...and what is your basis that the RCC is evil?0
