Lost

this is not about the TV show Lost (which is my favorite show right now), but about my stolen car, I posted this on my blog, sorry for the long post, I hope you all learn from my mistakes, thank you for reading!
My car (see pictures below) was stolen last Oct. 31, I never thought that carnappers also target old cars (akala ko mga mamahalin lang). We parked the car somewhere outside our condo in QC around 11:30pm on Oct. 30 and found out in the afternoon the next day that it was gone (nawala ng parang bula). Of course, I was shocked and went to the police station to report it immediately. What was weird was that I had a dream sometime a week before that I lost my car, I dont know the exact details of my dream but I know that I woke up that day with a heavy heart.
The shock is now gone and I want to make this experience a positive one not only for me but for others and let me start by giving some tips for car owners:
1. Never leave your valuables (laptop, cellphone, camera, etc.) in plain view (This will certainly attract car thieves)
2. Always check all your door locks, even if it is in auto-lock (I always do this)
3. Always check if all your windows are rolled up (I always do this)
4. Install an alarm system (Sadly, mine was busted)
5. Buy a steering wheel lock (I had one but havent used it for sometime, I just lock the steering wheel every time)
6. Insure your car (Comprehensive insurance so you can claim if your car was stolen)
7. Park your car in a garage, if possible (We dont have a parking slot in our condo, we park our car on a common area outside the building)
8. Always park in busy, well-lighted areas, whenever possible (Of course at night we have no control over this)
9. Dont leave your OR/CR in your car (I left the original OR in the car and its a hassle getting a new copy in LTO)
10. If your car is stolen, report it to the police immediately (So that if your car was used for kidnapping, robbery, etc. you will not be held liable)
There are so many things I am thankful for in my life (I am going to be a daddy soon!). I am glad that my pregnant wife was not much affected by this and was not stressed out like me. And of course I am grateful for the support we received from our family and friends.
I know that I may never see that car again, actually, my wife and I were talking about buying a new car before the car got stolen (kaya nagtampo yung car at umalis), we would have used it as a downpayment. But life must go on, (ang drama ba?) I have always believed that everything happens for a reason and my mindset right now is that whoever stole my car, he/she needed it more than I do.

even with insurance. how much do you think he will be able to get for it?
that is a 92- 97 model lancer. msrp back then was about 400,000. he's lucky if he'll be able to get 100k for it sa insurance.
100k is even barely enough for downpayment nowadays.
Its certainly better than the advice of "piecing it back together" from chopped up parts.
OT: At least insurance companies are more sensible in appraising cars unlike car sellers. Cult classic or not, I find it outrageous that a bone-stock Honda Civic HB from '93 is still priced as P200k. Thats the same price as when it was sold by the dealer mor ethan 10 years ago!0 -

uh... it's actually a jab at what the car jacker did to his car than anything.
btw, how much is comprensive insurance? 20k a year? so at the end, eh nalugi pa sya. dahil obviously naman that the car is more than 5 years old na.0 -
For a 5+ year old car? About P10K-P15k. I just paid for a comprehensive insurance last May, amounting to about P12k, for a 7yearold car. For a payment of P15k you get P100k (assuming you are correct at the appraised value), not bad IMO, certainly better than moping around for a lost car. And comprehensive insurance not only works for carnapped cars either. I got involved in a car accident and the insurance company paid for the repairs, amounting to P30k.
There was a thread about a wrecked Mazda 3 in an automotive forum months ago. The owner was very desperate to salvage whatever money he can from the wreck because he did not get insurance for the car.0 -

I think I saw that too... pretty bad smack-up with no insurance.
Comprehensive insurance is a good investment not only against theft/carjacking (it won't make you think twice about giving up the car perhaps) and accidents.
m_ke2: Sorry to hear about that... usually the motive for a car like yours is to either chop it up for parts or use it in a crime.0 -
15,000 x 11 yrs (assuming 1995)
= 165, 000
Uh it doesn't work that way. Since the car value depreciates every year, insurance premiums also go down.
If you think insurance is not worth it, read up on that insurance-less wrecked Mazda. Insurance (like condoms) are one of those things you better have and not need, than ned and be w/o. Kung nanghihinayang ka sa P15k at makukuha mo lang eh P100k, mas manghihinayang ka kung wala kang makuha.0 -
how bout prevention.. do car alarms really work? are there cases when a car was STILL stolen despite having an alarm? how bout those steering wheel locks(ex. the Club) do those work? honestly 15k a year for comprehensive insurance on an older model car is really steep -- maybe we can invest in car alarms and steering wheel locks instead.0
-
Car alarms and wheel locks? Well they would disocurage car theft, at best delay them.
Yes it is a bit steep. But then its just not about the car, it also covers the passengers as well as pedestrians, w/c is even more important. Cars can be replaced or fixed, but as Slamm has implied, human lives are not easy to replace.0 -
wait, i have an 9 year old car. paid around 16,000 for the insurance. my car was appraised at 300k with 1% participation fee. so its not bad. why did i get an insurance? i got into an accident before. the amount i paid to the offended party was more than enough to get an insurance.0

cars stolen in QC and Caloocan end up in chopshops in Apalit. Those stolen in Makati, Pque, Munt wind up in Trece Martires Cavite.0
