Qtv-11: Extreme Makeover

TRANSFORMING UGLY ducklings into beautiful swans. This is what the US hit series “Extreme Makeover” is all about. QTV11 brings the reality show to local viewers and gives it a local dimension.

“We’ve done this several times—putting Filipino subtitles on canned shows to localize it,” said Wilma Galvante, GMA 7 senior vice president for entertainment TV.

With various incarnations of beauty makeovers in practically every variety show on cable and free TV, “Extreme Makeover” is in for an extreme challenge. Why would TV audiences want to watch it?

“It’s not all about vanity,” Galvante said. “It’s real life unfolding on TV.”

In one episode, Galvante said, experts discuss why three women need a physical overhaul.

“At the end of the episode, the women are revealed to the audience and to their family,” she said.

To spice things up further, the network tapped two beauty experts to act as presenters each week—Dr. Pie Calayan, chief dermatologist of Calayan Surgicenter; and Jessica Rodriguez-Bunevacz, talent manager, beauty consultant and marketing director of Beverly Hills 6750 Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Institute.

Said Galvante of Calayan and Bunevacz: “They are known in the field of beauty. They know about making other women more beautiful.”

Calayan has also had first-hand experience with makeovers, beginning with herself. “Eleven years ago, I had my eye bags removed surgically,” she admitted.

The show goes beyond vanity and drama, Calayan pointed out.

She explained: “Women want to look better. In most cases, looking better improves a woman’s life, her career and how she feels about herself. This is more important than any makeover.”

“Extreme Makeover” will air Tuesday nights, starting Sept. 19.

  • Infomercials are soon no more, as ABC launches the first live and interactive TV home shopping show in the Philippines titled Venta5 (read as ‘venta singko’) which starts airing nationwide this September with a 3-hour, 6-days a week deals on retail exclusives with unmatched value offers.

"Home TV Shopping is the fastest growing industry in TV worldwide," says ABC Allied Businesses Director Jose B. Javier. "Sales of existing local infomercials have been increasing steadily."

    The show

Like its foreign counterparts, Venta5 will be presented by credible and personable hosts which include veteran actress Boots Anson–Roa, public affairs personality Claudine Trillo Webb, sports anchor Patricia Bermudez–Hizon and 2002 Bb. Pilipinas Universe Karen Agustin. Boots will be the main host tying up all segments, while the rest alternate on different product categories, each according to his/her expertise. Unlike existing infomercials, Venta5 promises that product presentation will be straightforward and competent, providing customers with more choices for every item category from a wide selection of sources.

Because the show airs live, audience gets to interact with hosts regarding items on sale providing time for inquiries, testimonials and reactions. The show will feature live and pre-taped product demos. The timeslot was set to capture interest of homemakers attending to their daily house chores. The show begins with a "Buena Mano" deal of the day segment taking after the Filipino tradition of unbelievable offers for early buyers.

    Quality Products

Products featured vary from home décor and household items (Home Advantage); kitchenware and utensils (Kitchen Store); cosmetics, fashion and accessories (Beautiful You); hobbies and crafts (Pastime Passions); electronics, gadgets and car accessories (Fully Loaded); fitness and health (Body Wise), to groundbreaking Pinoy inventions (Pinnovations). Products are sourced locally and abroad.

    Unmatched value offers

Venta5 offers unmatched value offers. Says Gerry Castro, Venta5 Managing Director, "Filipino consumers will realize that what Venta5 sells on its show is the best value in the market. Venta5’s rights to exclusive products allows it to set prices below market standard. Quality is first and will never be compromised."

    Superior customer service

Viewers can call in to give comments live on-air. Each offer will also be pitched live. A separate call center (One Outsource) handles all sales and phone inquiries while Air21 and FedEx conduct end-to-end delivery and collection.

Venta5 shoppers can pay via Credit Card (MasterCard, Visa, BPI), Bank Deposit, Remittance Centers and COD (Cash On Delivery). Membership Cards will also be made available for rewards and discounts. An exclusive website is also in the works which will soon accept orders online, allow customers to keep track of purchases and reward points, and chat with a customer service representative.

Also, as its social advocacy, Castro adds that Venta5 will donate P5.00 for every sale to a chosen charity.

With crowded malls, traffic, pollution, and questionable canned infomercials on-air, Venta5 could be the next prime option of the urbanized Pinoy.
