second hand compact cars

i'm considering a second car and i notice some good-looking compacts out on the street. my officemate swears by her hyundai getz and she takes care of if like it's a benz. there're also the later kias. i understand chevy-phils also has a new compact out. my friends say i'm going to pay through the nose for maintenance if i bought one of those things. they say i should just save up for a regular sedan like a corolla, or altis or civic.

so, is a less-than-500,000 brand new car a bad idea?

1.) Hyundai getz and the likes are not COMPACT SEDANS.

They're SUBCOMPACTS. (actually, technically, they're even SUB- SUB Compacts, since Jazz/ Vios are compact sedans)

2.) well, they should save you gas bills for your daily drive. so it's your choice, i suppose.

yeah i do plan to use it on a daily basis, that's why i reckon savings on gas will kick in.
  • get the small kia diesels. it'll do wonders for your fuel budget but not your sex life. :)

hey thanks guys and gals! you see, our "family car" is a casa-maintained 1992 lancer glxi. it's in great condition and we're kinda attached to it (our daughter even has a name for it). i want to preserve it as long as possible. so any other car i get is in for rough daily use.

i reckon a sub-sub-compact will suit my needs.

The Picanto offers a solid value. Php475k for the M/T gets you an MP3 head unit, front power windows, anti-theft system, among others. If you can pay a small premium, the Picanto's cousin (they share a lot of underpinnings), the Getz offers a bit more such as four power windows and adjustable rear head restraints (a nice safety feature considering how close the hatch glass is to the rear seats) on these types of vehicles.

Third party (non-casa) support is also strong for both Kia and Hyundai.

Chevy offers rebadged Daewoos in the form of the Spark and Aveo. But you don't get much more features than in the Kia or Hyundai while still having to pay a premium for the priviledge of having golden bowties for badges.

They won't drive you crazy maintenance wise. They need very little oil, have small oil filters (cheap even at casa prices). Their tiny tires are cheap, as well as their other consumables (filters, brake pads/shoes, etc.). They (at least the Kia and Hyundai) carry 3 year warranties.

If you can afford a bigger car then why not. But if your budget limits you, todays minicars won't make you feel like you're in the penalty box.

For a new sub-compact my vote goes to the Hyundai Getz. :)

For a 2nd hand car at less than 500k then look at a '03 Altis/Civic na slightly used or those 2001 and up model Sentra/Corolla 1300's amongst some :) Daming second hand cars dyan (Manila Bulletin Classifieds on weekends); but be prepared to shell out for some repairs.
  • for for a Honda Civic EK SiR :) (1999-2000)

Truth be told, many compact cars until 2002 can be found at below your PhP500k price ceiling.

The Getz and Picanto are pretty good options. If you can add to your budget, there's also the Kia Rio at PhP600k thereabouts.
