with your budget, you can't go wrong with a corolla gli. its very reliable and fuel efficient.

With 200K, I'd look at a 150-170K priced vehicle then spend the extra 30-50K for the possible repairs that usually accompany a old, used car.

    Some choices:
    - 1993 to 1995 Corolla Gli
    - 1995 to 1997 Corolla XE
    - 1997 to 1999 Nissan Sentra LEC
    - 1995 to 1997 Nissan Sentra Super Saloon

Take your time, look at several cars, test them well, don't buy the first car you see... and as much as possible, buy the car from a direct owner.

If you do get a 1993-97 Corolla, check the suspension. We had one of the first units (bought it October 1992) and the springs sagged with time and wear, necessitating careful negotiation of humps to avoid scraping the belly.

Also check the clutch for slippage, it might have seen its share of abuse. Ours lasted 8 years before it wore down to the rivets. A "slipping clutch" on a manual transmission means that even if you've engaged a gear, the power doesn't go to the wheels and your engine just revs.

Other than that you will be well-served by a Corolla. Like Slamm says, reserve PhP30k for repairs---a clutch replacement job cost us around PhP10k, including additional repairs. Hope this helps. :)
  • Definitely a corolla gli 1\93-97 model.

An esi civic won't be a bad choice either

For EG (1992-95) Civics, try to avoid the automatics. These have nasty shift shock. It was only on more recent cars that Honda got to remove this. :)

Check out the Manila Bulletin classifieds on Sundays, they have a lot of cars there and the prices you see are more or less market value (as compared to the overpriced vehicles on Buy and Sell, etc...).

one more thing about eg's is the bubbles on the paint. specially on the roof and rear fenders. but its nothing a good paint shop can't fix.

^ Yeah, that happened to one of my friends. Weird "flat" paint bubbles formed on his EG's roof.

Was in the same exact situation 4 months ago, ended up buying a 95 Corolla GLi.

If you know the seller and it's in very good condition, ok lang na kahit 180-190, depende siguro sa condition. What I can tell you is look around and ask around, and do it a lot. You have to learn and know what to look for para pag may dumating na auto na seemingly mispriced (medyo mataas or medyo mababa), you'd understand why and judge for yourself if it's worth it.

(syempre, may huhulugan ka (whether 0% interest or may interest plus the maintenance and the cost of fuel).

With an additional 100K to your 200K budget you can get a 1998 to 2000 model car already like a Civic 1.5Lxi, Corolla Gli (AE111 body), Sentra Exalta, etc. :)
  • i'm selling my honda city 97 model. 185k lang. 85k palang ung mileage.

Those used car dealer lots usually charge a premium (as much as 100K over market value from an actual owner-seller) and may do a lot of "Retoke" to the cars. To get the cars shiny, they use voluminous amounts of paint shop grade rubbing compound; not good. It does get the car shiny but your topcoat is gone and the shine will disappear after a sometime and all the paint wear and tear will show.
  • Im selling my 1996 Honda Civic LXi 200k :)
