Help: Im new in driving

I finished my ten hour driving class months back. My problem is grabe ang anxiety ko when driving alone. Im so anxious that hindi ko matimpla yun pedals ng car which i usually can easily do with the instructor around. I have a two hour session where i drove alone but i was still confident coz alam ko na nandun lang yun instructor nearby but now that i have to drive on my own, im felling jittery as in grabe ang anxiety level ko. Is this normal to some? What should i do to battle and conquer it? Im so conscious of other cars and feeling ko lagi ko silang maaabala. Geez, i hate this coz some people i know could easily drive without feeling so anxious.

Please give me some tips naman to boost my confidence in driving. Thanks

  • hehehe! I kinda know what you mean. I just finished my 5 hour automatic driving class last Sunday, and I think I did a good job naman. Actually, I studied na before when I was 16 yrs. old pero manual, at hirap na hirap talaga ako! I wasn't able to practice so wala rin nangyari. I get what you mean about feeling conscious of other cars... Feeling ko rin I'm gonna hit them especially pag traffic at siksikan! But I think practice definitely makes perfect. I tried driving kanina sa village and I think I just have to master the things I'm weak at. It's all in the mind.
  • ganyan po talaga. sa una, akala mo lahat babanggain ka. or lahat mababangga mo. in my first weeks, pawis na pawis ako while driving, kahit may aircon. hehe.

ok lang yan. just follow traffic rules, be nice and considerate, and have fun. The next stage of early driving is kapag nakuha mo ang confidence mo, minsan sobra. kala mo naman invincible ka, until you get in an accident, which I pray doesnt happen. tapos you mellow out, and find driving second nature. hindi na umiinit ulo mo sa traffic, mga nag cut, mga barumbado etc.

    happy motoring

Dati nga sobrang conscious ako sa gears, gas, brakes tsaka clutch, conscious as in i have to really look at it. But after sometime, naging parang second nature ko na, part na ng system when I'm behind the wheel.

So, just relax, you'll be ok after sometime.

hey timmy, just remember that every driver on the road went through that stage

dont be too uneasy, they'll probably understand

and always, have presence of mind. happy driving!
  • got a suggestion, get a automatic car..a lot easier
  • What boosted my confidence while driving is knowing the fact that I have CAR INSURANCE.

Part of your anxiety is due to the "what if " that is always running through your mind while driving. I suggest you join a car enthusiast club like Wheelers Club so that you can have peace of mind that whatever happens to you, somebody will help you. You will soon find out that once you build your confidence in driving, you will seldom encounter the "what ifs".

And try to drive a lot. Experience is the best teacher and confidence builder. Usually, you will hear yung mga mayayabang na driver tell you "I have been driving for 30 years! Don't tell me what to do!" ... so ibig sabihin, experience is giving them the confidence. So drive a lot to gain experience too.
  • ganyan tlga pag bago k lang. bsta always remember to take ur time while driving. minsan kse napre-pressure ka lalo na pag may sasakyan sa likod mo. the more na magmamadali ka sa pgda-drive, the more prone you are to create mistakes yaan mo cla ang gumawa ng diskarte para i-overtake ka, and i agree with wat mr cyborg said. make sure you are insured and always stay in your lane, para jst in case magkaron ng accidents, you can emphasize na nsa tamang linya ka. and one final advice, its not really good if ure too careful bsta relax ka ln lage and have fun, coz driving is fun. :)

Learning how to drive really isn't a one-shot deal. It's a continuous process that needs constant practice, and with practice comes confidence.

Here's my story: After passing my 7-hour course, I had to drive under the watchful eye (and shrill voice ) of my mother every couple of weeks from Bicutan to Caloocan and back, using a stick-shift Corolla. I did that for 1 year, and I committed all sorts of stupid mistakes that no doubt gave her momentary hypertension. The whole point of that was to gain confidence and practice.

The same confidence has to be built up again when driving some other vehicle, such as an SUV or van. It's a matter of getting used to the bigger dimensions and the more sluggish responses of the controls (compared to most cars).

I've been driving for 6 years already and like Tunasashimi said, there are moments when I have too much confidence. We're only human after all. It takes self-restraint, discipline and a fear of the law to keep things civil on our crazy roads. I'm beginning to approach that "third stage" when I can care less about people cutting into my lane and stuff, though. Must be my age.

Tama lang yang ginagawa mo, learning on a manual-equipped car. Don't worry, you'll get used to it eventually. Praktis lang yan! ;)
  • Just like they said practice. Whenever your not the one driving or just commuting observe mo ung driver ng jeep/fx/taxi/ private car. youll learn a lot. Observe and imitate at home pag ikaw lang mag isa use your imagination. Another thing is if your practicing dapat ang kasama mo na magtuturo eh yung medyo authoriative yung voice, sanay magdrive. para habang nagdrive ka sinasabi nya kung tama o mali yung ginagawa mo.

^ In line with that, I got a few tips.

    - As much as possible, make yourself an island. Distance yourself from other cars, especially from the sides. The distance between you and other cars is what's called "active safety."

    - On the highway, leave the left lane clear except when overtaking. After an overtaking maneuver, return to the middle lane to give way to faster drivers.

    - Want to overcome your car-related claustrophobia? Learn how to park! Parking practice will help you judge and remember just how far the corners of your car are. This will give you the confidence you need and lessen your fear of hitting other cars. Parking in reverse and parallel parking in particular will help you get used to your car's bounds a LOT.

    Hope this helps :D

oo nga pala ONE more thing..

I agree with the whole U-turn scheme thing, the norm is for overtaking cars or traffic that's going farther on to stay on the left lane. The U-turn scheme screws with that, but at least it seems to solve some of EDSA's woes.

  • just be confident....
  • sanayan lang yan! basta be calm when driving. ako kase ung first time ko na mag isa magdrive, konting busina lang saken natataranta na ako lalo na sa edsa ang taft avenue, lagi ako nabubusinahan ng mga bus kaya tendency ko nun namamatayan ako ng makina kase nawala ung concentration ko sa pagtitimpla ng gas hehe and ung first time ko pumunta sa mall nakabangga pa ako ng van ung nagpapark ako nun hehe

Practice & practice lang, but be sure to to the correct driving techniques. soon you'll be driving like the best of em.
  • thanks to everyone. its a relief to know that what im going thru is common to most new drivers. at least nakakabawas ng kaba knowing that marami palang tulad ko rin out there. when i read the posts, mejo lumakas na yun loob ko. di naman totally coz lagi pa rin akong napapatayan ng sasakyan esp pag natataranta ako but im learning to deal with it. thanks again guys! and i hope you keep the other tips coming. good am to all! and drive safely na rin to all! (and to me na din, hehehe!)
