[Merged] 2006 Honda Civic

My Honda sales rep told me that they will launch the eighth generation Civic on April 3, 2006. Indicatively, the price range is from P790 thousand to P1.1 million. The high end of the price range represents the 2.0 liter, iVTEC variant, which now comes with paddle shifters.

At P1.1 million for the 2.0 liter model, the price is roughly equal to what I paid for my 2004 Accord VTI-L.

Kudos to Honda for never giving up on the good old synchromesh manual gearbox.

Their marketing has to work a lot better this time though...
  • Akala ko now that the peso exchange rate has improved eh bababa na ang presyo ng sasakyan. Tsk, tsk, tsk, P1 million pa rin! Dati ang high-end eh nasa P920k lang.

uh... from 55 to 51 isn't much of an improvement,. really. sa states, civics start at 15,000 usd. multiplahy mo ng 52, and it is 780,000.

and that's a really basic trim pa.,

I was already guessing some months back that the top end model would already breach the 1M mark as the 2.0L model from the ES body was already flirting with the high 900's before they discontinued the ES earlier this year.

This really shows that the vehicle classes are really going up by one notch... The sub 1600 cars (i.e. Vios, City, etc.) are already equivalent to our 1600 sedans 5-10 years ago while the Civic, Corollas, etc are already going into the midsize sedan category in trim, size and engine choices.

Consider where the Civic started when it first came out in 1974. It was roughly equivalent to a Kia Pride in size, engine and accommodation. I am pretty sure the Corollas started out much in 1969 like the Civic did: cheerful, cheap transportation.

Now look at how those two cars have grown over the span of 30+ years. It's clear to see people want more and more out of their Corollas or Civics. Case in point: My family had both an AE101 (1993-1997) and ZZE121 (2001-2006) Corolla and the difference between the two is frankly astonishing. The ZZE121 Altis feels better built and sounds like a silent limo compared to its older brother. I'm confident we're seeing progress, but of course progress always has a price.

Besides, it's not like you're restricted to buying a new FD-series Civic and nothing else. If you're irked by the Civic's new price bracket, you can always opt for a City or Jazz...or sniff around the used-car lots and get yourself a second-hand EG, EK or ES Civic.

yep. accord used to be civic's 2 door sedan brother in the 70s din. now it's the midsized car.

the size of the civic and corolla and lancer has been growing steadily every body change. look at the old civic hatchbacks from 92. They're not that bigger than a current model city. technology has played a good part in all of these. dati it's hard to fit 4 grown ups in a car. now.. 2 grownups can comfortably fit in a corolla/ civic/ lancer.

edit: one gripe i have with the new civic.. lack of colors . WTF.. 3 colors per trim WTF is that?

    that's crap.
  • A-attend kaya si Vernon Sarne sa launch?

I'm not really irked by the price bracket. I'm irked about the purchasing power of Filipinos today. While before, people can afford to buy the high-end models, nowadays all you can afford are the City's and the Jazz's - simply because salaries have been unable to catch up with the price braket increase. That's why like i said earlier, I thought that with an improving peso, i thought the price of commodities (Civics included) will go down.

well most pinoys nowadays get cars via Company Car Plan. filipino's salary might not increase as fast as commodities go up, pero campany car plan's always been a ompact sedan diba.

the civic will again set new standards in compact sedans just like when they introduced the civic vti and sir...

....also heard that the new civic's engine will be more powerful and yet fuel efficient.
  • Do you guys also get the Si coupe verson there in Pinas ??
  • GreatBop

nope.. No coupe since 92 model. we might get an SiR model. but that's a long shot still.

The Civic coupes are a US-only idiosyncrasy like the Ridgeline pick-up, they're actually manufactured over there by American Honda. Even Japan gets no Civic coupe whatsoever.

^ The EP3 Civic Type R came from the UK. And it was no coupe, like the question said; it was a 3-door hatchback.

The same EP3 chassis made it to US shores badged as the Civic Si, with -40 HP.
  • Is this the new Civic?

I was hoping for a radical design. Kinda disappointed.

    I like the Si better.
