RPM = revolutions per minute, measured from your engine's crankshaft or distributor rotor. In other words it's an indicator of engine speed.

Usually the higher your engine speed, the greater the power your engine generates. Unfortunately this also means more fuel burned.

That's why gears are necessary. You can't be stuck in 1st gear all the time to reach highway cruising speeds; that'll be very wasteful on gas and strenuous on your engine. By having a set of gears, you can extend your engine's capability, travel at faster speed and save fuel.
  • gusto kong magpakabit ng external tachometer pag may pera. :D
  • tnx for your replies..

ung RPM-nirerepresent niya ung revolutuion per minute na ano(wheels) ba?

bakit ung ibang cars walang RPM?

    bakit x1000 ung rpm?

kailan ba advisable magshift by looking at the rpm?pag nasa red line na o sa may 3?

    Revolutions per minute ng crankshaft.

Walang tachometer to keep the vehicle price down (wala siya usually sa lower-end models), but you can add an aftermarket one.

Bakit x1000 rpm? Eh kasi yun ang nasusukat niya eh. For the sake of convenience eh in thousands yung measurement ng rpm.

Depends, naka-indicate sa car manual w/c is the best time to shift. Also depends on the driving style.
  • Ok lang ang redline shift kung
    a. kumakarera ka, or
    b. libre gas mo.

Otherwise, shift at 3k rpm or if possible 2k rpm.

On cars without tachos I usually go by ear. Kung maingay na ang makina then shift. Some people go by speed, i.e. they shift at 10, 20, 30, then 40 kph.

Not to be rude, but I already mentioned RPM measures CRANKSHAFT ROTATION. The closest approximation to this is the rotation speed of the distributor's rotor.

The device that measures RPM is the TACHOMETER or REVCOUNTER. Some cars don't have it---usually the cheaper ones, as it's a secondary gauge to the all-important speedometer, strictly speaking.

Why are tachometers calibrated to display x1000 RPM? Simple, it's easier to read that way. Some manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz set it to read x100 RPM, so the display is not 0,1,2...8 but 0,10,20...80. This is a very minor difference, the readout is still the same.

When is it advisable to shift? Redline shifts are only called for when you actually need all the power of the engine. In most driving situations, that just isn't the case. Besides redline shifts are a quick and surefire way to make you poorer from gasoline bills. Shift early to maximize fuel economy; use the midrange (literally the middle of your tachometer's sweep range) or the high-end (close to redline) for overtaking.
