Despite the exit of Shell, the Philippine Basketball Association might keep a 10-team roster as it opens its 2005-2006 season in October with a prospective new team member now in touch with league commissioner Noli Eala.

Eala refused to divulge the identity of the firm involved but there were initial negotiations.

"They’re interested to join the league and we’ve discussed how they can avail themselves of the PBA membership. But I can’t divulge its identity at the moment for reasons that the company wants to keep our discussion very informal," said Eala.

Eala said they discussed the company’s possible takeover of the Shell squad or joining the league as an expansion ball club. "They want to know what could be more feasible or viable for them," he said.

Eala said they could easily change the approved format involving only nine teams if the new ball club decides to join the league starting the 2005-2006 campaign.

"We would discuss in a board meeting the tournament format for re-approval. And we could adopt our old format involving 10 teams," said Eala.

This developed as Shell formalized its indefinite leave of absence in the league through a letter by Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. chairman and president Edgar Chua to the Commissioner’s Office yesterday.

Pursuant to the league constitution, Shell is to forward to the Commissioner’s Office the contracts of its displaced players for proper dispersal.

Eala said they will hold the dispersal draft before the Annual Rookie Draft set Aug. 14 at the Sta. Lucia East Mall in Cainta.

Players to be involved in the dispersal draft are Joey Mente, Arnold Gamboa, Rob Duat, Eugene Tejada, Jerry Codinera, Jeck Chia, Edwin Bacani, Tonyboy Espinosa, Estong Ballesteros, Banjo Calpito, Chris Jackson, Celino Curz, Rensy Bajar, Carlo Sharma, Marlon Legazpi and Porfirio Marzan.

Before Shell’s leave of absence eventually took effect, the team was able to deal to other teams Rich Alvarez, Tony dela Cruz, Billy Mamaril, Ronald Tubid, Chris Calaguio, Roger Yap, Ervin Sotto and Kalani Ferreria.

  • in an expansion
the 9 teams will protect 8 players and the rest will be placed in an expansion draft
the new team can then select 1 player from each of the 9 teams unprotected list
those not selected return to their mother teams

but the key here is that
    if theres a new team
it has to be known before the rookie draft

the dispersal draft for the 9 teams only should go first
then the expansion draft for the new team
and finally the rookie draft for all 10 teams
the new team should get the 3rd pick in the rookie draft

is this new team really serious
    or its just eala babbling

    because if he's not
then he should move fast since the rookie draft is next week
or he should re schedule the rookie draft

  • Bakit kaya walang IT company interested in getting a PBA franchise? Syempre yung interested lang dapat yung mga merong mass-based products kaya malabo na yung Oracle, SAP, EMC, etc.

Ever thought of having teams like the IBM Computers, the HP Printers, the Intel Processors...or probably the Microsoft Pirates? :naughty:

    from Abante Online....

knowing purefoods, they're going to get jerry codinera and/or jun marzan in the dispersal draft. just like their key veteran additions last year were tonyboy espinosa and zaldy realubit...

sensya na kung cynical ako kung pinag-uusapan ang mga rebuilding projects ng purefoods...but my favorite team's been bogged down by bad management and even worse coaching for the longest time...
  • Looking at Anthony's list, and assuming the Kume isn't just blabbing, we just might see a Sun Cellular team in the near future.

pwede ba condom company sa pba?
like trust frenzies o sensation sensations?
  • It is very unlikely a new team will come in for this coming season.

After Shell has devalued its team by trading its best players, who would want to buy its franchise and assume the contract of its non-entity players- the kind of players very unlikely to be taken during the dispersal draft. Imagine, bayad ka na ng 45M, assume mo pa contract ng players who are practically discards. Kahit bumuo ka ng bagong line-up, babayaran mo pa rin yung mga live contracts ng mga yun! Paano pa salary cap?

Now, anyone who has a team in the PBL buying into the Shell seat, can't be considered an expansion team and cannot elevate a select list of players from their own team into the PBA. Mabigat na restriction yan, unless the PBA makes an accomodation. It is worse if the one contemplating on buying Shell has no competitive PBL team at all.

Kung may papasok namang expansion team, tanong ay kakayanin ba nila ang entry fee ng PBA and then be able to afford and endure the birth pains of being a new member? Last time a new member came in, the PBAs entry fee was 60M. Then, malamang mapagtatalo yan, coupled with the low TV ratings of the PBA, double whammy sila sa tv and print mileage.

No one wants to be labled a loser in a league with diminishing popularity.

If I were a corporation looking for a venue to promote a brand, the PBA, right now, is a very expensive way of doing it.

I would rather build on the surging popularity of badminton and volleyball. Affordable now, better prospects in the long term, and very easy to create a niche.

Of course, there's nothing to discuss if one has no qualms in parting with 45 or 60M and has high pain treshhold in seeing his team getting beaten black and blue.

sana naman maging 10 ulit yung team, matagal ko nang gusto madagdagan yung teams pero ang nangyari ay yung opposite, nabawasan pa....
  • But it's the PBA, you can turn a team around in one season provided you're willing to hustle.

And if Shell is willing to sell it's franchise at it's current value, then that's a great deal. Pay PhP 30-40 M right now for a a bunch of players worth nothing, then if you know what you're doing you can have a championship caliber team in a few years that's worth PhP 60+ M. And you paid a helluva lot less for it.

they should ask for concessions, the buyer of the shell franchise.

assuming shell made the salary dump alredy, which looks like what they did. i mean, come on. impossible naman atang equal in range ang tdlc and alvarez for tejada and duat contarcts...

    yung kay jerry mageexpire na.

dapat sabihin nila na hingi sila ng pera for whatever contracts are left, as a discount to the fee.
