S.O.B.s in SUVs

But why do these politician SOBs (kung pwede lang mag mura dito eh) ang napakayayabang.

Kung sakaling maglabas siya ng boga at magkatutukan, so be it. Basta nasa lugar ako!

Kayo ba, have you encopuntered any of these SOBs in SUVs? :splat:

Please don't generalize and single out 4x4 SUV's.

You are making a hasty generalization.

I don't think you read the original poster's message. Specifically the following part:

Talk about timely. Here's the editorial from today's (5/23) PhilStar:

    EDITORIAL - Abuse of privilege

    The Philippine Star 05/23/2005

At one time or another, every motorist in Metro Manila has given way to a convoy of vehicles with blinkers and wailing sirens. The motorist gives way not because he believes whoever is being escorted deserves VIP treatment in the traffic-clogged streets of Metro Manila, but because he is often given little choice. If he refuses to give way, he risks being sideswiped by a gas-guzzling SUV or by a cop on a motorcycle who glares at anyone who blocks the path of the VIP.

A recent report said the Armed Forces of the Philippines spends about P500 million a year on security details for VIPs. The amount must be bigger for the Philippine National Police. The VIP is not always a public official. Often, spouses, children and even mistresses of public officials are assigned security convoys. Even businessmen in this country can get police or military security escorts if the price is right.

It’s not just the assignment of security escorts that can confuse ordinary motorists. Anyone can obtain a police siren in this country. And even privately owned motorcycles have police blinkers. Civilians have found these devices useful in parting traffic in Metro Manila. Campaigns have been launched on and off against the unauthorized use of police sirens and blinkers, with little effect.

Amid complaints from motorists, Malacañang has reportedly warned public officials against abusing the use of security escorts to flout traffic rules and harass ordinary motorists. We’ve heard similar orders in the past, but such campaigns always ran into one major snag: no traffic cop dared pull over a convoy escorting a vehicle with low-numbered license plates. These days the emasculated traffic aides of the Metro Manila Development Authority will simply look away when they see such security convoys beating a red light.

Certainly there are VIPs who are entitled to special privileges. Few people will begrudge such privileges to the President, Vice President, leaders of Congress and ambassadors. Motorists do give way to clearly marked police vehicles, ambulances and fire trucks. For the rest of officialdom and certain private individuals, there should be no escaping traffic at the expense of ordinary motorists.

With the recent furor over the perks, VIPs may behave better, but don’t expect such leadership by example to last long. For such officials, there is a clear line between VIPs and the hoi polloi. What are they in power for?
