  • magmamartsa na ako this april 23 (college) and 24 (university) with a degree in political science ***** laude from diliman. ang advice ko lang sayo, and i hope you take this to heart, huwag mong seryosohin ang pag-ambisyon ng laude standing. consider yourself extremely lucky na nakapasok ka sa UP, and that means do not miss out on all the fun side of being a peyups citizen.do join an org where you will find some nice and permanent friends (remember na every sem bagong set ng classmates kaya it will help if you can have somebody na hindi transient sa college life mo).attend all activities that will spark your interest (most especially the UAAP games and the nestle cheerdance contest in araneta -- you will never know the meaning of the UP school spirit unless you went to any of these!). in short, enjoy your life, of course alongside your acads.kasi kapag naka-set lang ang eyes mo sa honors, the biggest tendency is that you become a mere academic..for me that is the worst option for every UP student dahil ang pag-aaral ay hindi lang puro tungkol sa pag-accumulate ng knowledge.it is more importantly an opportunity to develop yourself. marami kasi kaming kilala na nagpapakasubsob sa pag-aaral, graduated with honors, pero pagdating sa workplace (where we will all end up, ultimately) hindi maka-adjust. bakit? kasi kulang sa social skills. hindi sanay mag-work sa isang team. kulang sa mga practical knowledge that one gets only by being involved in society at large.kaya kung ako sayo, just enjoy your life, enjoy your course. be passionate about everything you do. if you graduate with honors, e di maganda. if not, ok lang din as long as you know for yourself na you have learned something in college that you will definitely carry with you after you graduate.being a UP grad in itself is an edge na, trust me. most employers don't make such a big fuss about honors lalo na kung taga- UP ka naman na.i'm speaking based on my own experience, kaya i hope i was able to help.
  • Funny, my experience was:

1st Year: Goal is to reach honors
2nd Year: Goal is to Survive Econ 101 and 102 without getting kicked out of Econ
3rd Year: Goal is to reach Dean's List
4th Year: Goal is to graduate

But my life in UP was full of experiences, orgs, lovelife, eating out, etc. After graduating, the Companies didn't ask me on my honors, its my leadership and personal skills, extra curicular stuff it you'd ask me.

Panopticon: Gragraduate ba c Mark Lim this year? Friend ko yun, along with ryan aninias, polsci yung mga yun.
  • mark lim won't graduate, classmate ko siya this sem sa isang subject and sinabi niya sa akin na he won't be graduating with us. he dropped thesis yata.major heartbreak nga for us kasi siya na lang ang inaasahan naming mag-magna ***** laude sa poli sci batch namin. tapos naudlot pa. according to our news, walang magna ***** laude ang poli sci -- medyo masama loob namin lalo pa't taga-psych ang college valedictorian and namumutiktik daw sa mga magna ang department nila. medyo may silent rivalry kasi talaga ang departments namin. si ryan a., gagraduate na yata. pano mo sila nakilala? debsoc ka ba? saya naman, hpair ako...

on-topic: lememoir, tama si cono guy, talagang pagdating sa hiring, hindi pinapansin ang honors. in fact, sa case ko nga, parang mas nagiging hostile ang dating ng interview kapag nalaman na honor grad ka kasi you have to prove that you deserve it. tapos kapag hindi naman pala ok ang communication and management skills mo, mas lalong hindi ka tatanggapin.kaya mas maganda talaga na you cultivate your personality and inter-personal relationship while in college, mas may pakinabang ka diyan kaysa sa honors, added bonus na lang yung medal kumbaga.
  • Panopticon, nde ako HPAIR or Debsoc, theyr just my friends, hahaha. Nwei, Im really sure now kilala mo c marie quimpo, hehe, mga barkada ko yung mga yun. I graduated 1 year ahead of them. Batch mates ko sa econ c mags tan. EI 10 ang summa this year!
  • ^^^yap, sobra.milestone year talaga ito as far as i'm concerned.to think pa na tatlo dun sa mga summa are from BS math, two are from BS MBB, one from BS BAA, and one from BS ECE. may isa ring econ. grabe. pano kaya nabuhay sa kolehiyo yang mga taong yan? hehe

ang galing ng mga batang yan kakaiba... sigh... nung first sem ko mataas pa yung nakuha ko bagong bago sa UP tapso pagkatpos nun wala na bokya na! hehehehe

Tama si Cono Guy. Pagpasok ko as freshie sa Engg, I was aiming for honors.

Five years later, I was just aiming not to get kicked out of Engg, haha!
  • there's no sure formula. may mga kilala ako, they will drop a course if they see that they will not reach at least 1.75. they will also research ung sinong teachers na nagpapaulan ng mga 1.0. i graduated a long time ago (1991) wth a ***** laude. it wasn't a conscious effort on my part. i just took all my subjects seriously and studied hard. i must admit di ako gimikero nung college. just wasn't my thing anyway.
  • yeah, some will drop courses if they think they wouldn't get a high mark. kanya kanyang style. lememoir, don't think too much of getting a laude. think of surviving first.
  • lememoirlememoir PEx Veteran ⭐⭐
you guys, have a point...I guess I should think about survival first...

  • Hmmm.

i'm an incoming sophomore sa UPd.

ganyan din ako last year, praying na maging "laude". sabi ko nun, ui, madali lang naman ang BA Journalism kaya kayang-kaya yan, baka nga summa ***** pwede pa...

and for the past two semesters, di pa ako nagiging CS/US. ngayong sem nga .1 na lang, CS na ako.

pero di ako nagwoworry, because alam ko naman that maraming akong natutunan. yun iba ko ngang classmates, they took up this so called "easy" subjects and got a higher grade. pero ako i believe na di importante ang "laude".

I mean, ako I ventured to the so called hard subjects, i took econ11 nun 1st year-1st sem ko, and some of my coursemates ayaw nila dun kasi mahirap daw. but i survived, kahit na di 1 nakuha ko, at least i learned a lot.

Laude ka nga, eh pag dating mo naman sa real world, wala ka naman maipapala.

There's nothing bad about be a laude, ako nga hoping pa rin ako, pero don't let that hinder your UP life.

Wag mong i skip ang UP fair kasi may quiz kayo, or di ako aatend ng freshie concert kasi may pasok bukas.

Enjoy mo lang ang UP. Welcome!

(yuck, last year, pariwara rin ako na makapasok sa UP) hehe.

Well, tama siya. So lelemoir makinig ka sa kanya.

But also listen to me when I say that you need to be realistic as well. If your abilities can land you a laude honor and make you well-rounded at the same time, then go for it. But if being a laude becomes the center of your life, and if you find yourself sacrificing learning outside the classroom (orgs, extracurricular activities), then you need to re-evaluate yourself. The essence of college is having the privilege to learn in and outside the classroom.

If you're used to being the number one in high school, then strive to stay number one in college. But be reminded as well that you will be in the company of smart people. Intelligence is not an exception, but the norm. It's very good if you excel, but accept the fact that there's a chance that in UP you'll just be average. Maybe you'll find yourself studying for an exam for a whole month and you still get a 75%, or an equivalent grade of 2, which is respectable but still will not make you a laude.

Set high expectations but know when to lower them. :) If ever you lower your expectations, do so because of the limitations of your abilities, and not because of laziness.
  • basta ako my philosophy has always been "enjoy what you're doing". if you enjoy your course and enjoy doing the things that your course requires (i.e., writing and reading for social sciences, computations and problem-solving for natural sciences, field assignments for education, social work, and mass comm), then definitely hindi na magiging problem ang pag-attain ng laude standing.kumbaga, darating na lang yan, baka nga magulat ka pa na may honors ka when all you did was enjoy your time and do the things you love doing.kumbaga yung extra effort ibuhos mo na lang sa mga subjects na di mo masyado gusto pero required kunin. one indication that you are on the right track is when you keep getting the highest marks on your major subjects. ako kasi ganun, puro sa mga majors ko yung mga uno tapos sa mga required courses yung mga line of two (itago na lang natin sa pangalang econ subjects hehehe).sabi mo kasi you have plans of shifting, maganda yun na ngayon pa lang malinaw na sayo kung saan ang direction mo, hindi yung habang nasa kalagitnaan ka na atsaka mo pa lang mare-realize na iba pala ang gusto mo.
