The Chevy Lumina is a front-wheel drive sedan. It is popular in the U.S. with the non-personal use market. Police cars, taxi cabs, rental cars, government agencies, fleet use, etc. Really nothing special about it. It's plain vanilla.

GM is pulling the plug on the Opel brand soon. And they plan to replace the Vectra with this car.

I heard of an entirely different Lumina being sold in Malaysia and Singapore. That car's based on the Opel Omega chassis (RWD, I think) and uses a 3.8L V6 with 200+ HP.

Methinks this is the one that will find its way into Philippine showrooms soon. HICOMOBIL, the firm that manages Chevrolet's sales in Malaysia, already sells the Lumina V6 along with the Nubira (basically a rebadged Opel Zafira), the Aveo and the Optra---since last year if I remember correctly.

For more information, grab an issue of Autocar ASEAN. :)

The "LUMINA" name is actually quite old in GM nomenclature.

Aside from the US-market sedan shown in the above pictures, there was also a Lumina MPV minivan from the late 1980s.

carlocaraddict did post the Opel-derived Lumina in Tsikot. Yep its RWD. Its also the basis for the Cadillac Catera sedan.

IMHO, GM should have just concentrated on the European offerings (even if it meant rebadging them into Chevy's). I don't know why they keep bringing the Chinese and Korean vehicles in when they have other better vehicles in their arsenal.
  • Hmmm.... interesting. i was assigned to the US for one year and this was the company car that was issued to me.

Funny thing is I can't really remember anything about it. Can't even remember how we named it. I think it was Po (after the blue TeleTubby).

For it's size, it wasn't really all that roomy. Wasn't all that quick either. Such a plain vanilla American car.

They're being used as police cars here in Saudi. At least they're using the big V8 engined ones, I guess. They're very popular with the younger set here. You'll often see dressed up Luminas driven by young Saudis. The ones in the picture above are somewhat older models. They already have the newer, sportier looking ones here. That's why they're very popular.

^^shun_sakurai Yup, the Lumina name was used in the '90s as a replacement for the Celebrity. I could still remember the Lumina APV plastic-bodied minivan - yikes that thing looks horrible until the Pontiac Aztek came along (which is more horrible!).

I was disappointed when I first heard that GM will finally introduce a "US sourced car" here in the Philippines hoping that it would be US sourced like the big SUVs (Expedition, Tahoe, Explorer, Trailblazer). The Lumina here is indeed made in China. I was hoping that finally the Philppine market will see real American sedans - even though they're not exciting and just plain vanilla. I would like to see and feel how it is to ride in an American car which has been ballyhooed for being too softly sprung (typical American boulevard ride) and underpowered most of the time for its size.

P1.3 M is just right for this market. The Honda Accord 2.4 VTi starts at P1.25M. The cheapest Camry starts at P1.325 M.

The last remaining Opel brand car sold here is the Astra - another GM car that has been ballyhooed for its poor build quality.

I wish Chevrolet or GM will introduce real American cars here like the Cobalt, Malibu/Malibu Maxx and even the car given away Oprah Winfrey - the Pontiac G6.

    .

You can say that again, my boss is still shocked at the repair price GM quoted for his suspension and A/C. :surprised: I ended up bringing the car to my suking tindahans and cut the price quite significantly.

If they sell it a 1.2-1.3, medyo dehado yung car na yan sa labanan IMO as people will still more or less look at the Accord/Cefiro/Camry trio.

Yeah, I think the Lumina will be a hard sell against the Japanese opposition.

Saw the Lumina in an article on the STAR's motoring section today. Certainly does look like the Malaysian model I saw before, except for the engine.

I wonder how well this will sell though.
  • Bland, tastless. who's gonna buy that for 1.3M, it doesnt offer anything special or extraordinary for that price. If they priced it at 1M flat then i think there are people who might be tempted or if they added stuff like four way zone climate control, 8 airbags, dynamic stability control, those techie stuff.
