  • I've driven a Ford Lynx from Bulacan to Tagaytay and back. This was the company fleet / base model, which has a 1.3L engine.

The engine is adequate enough to go to the 100kph max speed limit of the NLEX and SLEX.

I was a bit worried when we approached Tagaytay. The lead car is a frantically-driven (includes overtaking on curves / hill-tops / yellow lines) Honda City (CVT) and am the one following. I was surprised that the Lynx was able to keep up and overtake other vehicles (not as dangerously as the City though). You just have to know the sweet spot of the engine, which was around 4K rpm. When we got to the some open and descending roads, the handling of the Lynx really shined. The brakes were good also. The suspension was quite noisy but the ride was comfortable enough.

I've heard wonders about the ride quality of the Lynx's suspension system...supposedly one of the best in the class. :)

Overall it's a likeable car. You get a lot of kit for less price than what is usual, even for a 1.6 (a comparable Honda Civic feels bare inside).

I also like how Ford Phils. has made the ownership experience easier; I've heard they will provide roadside assistance for you during your car's warranty period. Little things bundled in like that certainly help, right?

Only notable niggle I hear of from other owners is the rather thirsty engine lineup.

The Lynx is MAzda engineered (it's a 323 to be exact) Is it still Philippine-made? (i cant recall if Ford Phils exports their SUVs to Thailand then imports their sedans or vice versa)....

Value-for-money it is a good buy (esp. the 2.0L) but it will suffer in the resale value vis-a-vis HOnda, Mitsu, Nissan and Toyota. I drove a used model before and it felt much like our old MAzda 323 Familia... suspension and engine is good on the performance side (even the matic version was pretty punchy when floored) but i felt that the overall solidity/feel was a notch behind the Corolla and Sentra.

The Ford Lynx will be still on the market until 2005 when the Focus sedan will be onsale.Pero yung GSI at Ghia ang matitira.
  • Sorry to sound like a noob. But what does a Ford Lynx look like? Is it a rebadged for the Philippines Ford Focus? Like in the states, there are the Nissan Sentras, but in Mexico they're called Nissan Tsurus.

NOpe, it's not like the Focus but more like Mazda's Familia/323.

Here's a link to the FoMoCo Phil webbie site. :)http://www.ford.com/en/links/Global+Sites/Ford/Philippines.htm

The current-model Lynx takes its looks more from the European midsize Ford, the Mondeo.

The first Lynxes had the rear styling of the 4-door Focus.
  • The Ford Lynx is being built right here in the Philippines (alongside the Ford Escape, Mazda Protege / 3, Mazda Tribute). They are being exported to other SEA countries (like Singapore, Thailand).

The Lynx is based on the Mazda Protege Gen 3 (the Mazda3's predecessor). The Mazda 323 that you commonly see here is the Gen 2 & 2.5 (sold here from 1996 - 1999). It is also known as the Ford Focus on some markets.

The current-model Lynx is just an aesthetic upgrade of the previous model.

^ Yep, the production deal of Ford is that it produces the above vehicles here while it manufactures the Ranger in Thailand...or Malaysia. Basta one of those countries. :)

    mazdamazda,
So the local Lynx really has mechanical links (pardon the pun) to the gen1 Focus? Curious lang ako :)
  • Thanks for the info. Not a bad little car.

The Ford Lynx is in NO WAY mechanically related to the Focus. The Ford Lynx is based on the old Mazda Protege platform (before it gave way to the current Mazda3). As with mazdamazda, I have great praises for that plaform. Australia also gets a Ford version called the Laser (not sure about the local name).

If you really like the Mazda Protege/Ford Lynx, then buying one is not a bad decision.

Just be aware that the product is due for replacement as the Ford Focus is just around the corner.

It is already undergoing local evaluation mostly in the south of Manila.

^ The Lynx was called the "Laser Tierra" in other markets, the "Tierra" name probably to distinguish it from the previous 323-derived Laser of the 1980s.

Sigurado na ba makukuha natin yung Focus? Gen1 or gen2? Curious lang talaga ako :)
  • ^ I saw a Ford Laser in Singapore 2 years ago but it didn't resemble the 2002 Lynx. I don't know what year model that was but it looked new to me.

^ How many doors did it have?

If it was a 3-door model it was probably the Laser TX3, released there some time in the 1990s. You won't miss it...it looks WEIRD :D

I remember the old tale i used to hear in the 80's because of the Ford Laser... "Kalampagin ang auto na yan dahil Front wheel drive siya".

I don't remember exactly but it may have been that. Its shape wasn't angular (or what we commonly refer to as "box-type").

^ Mukha ba syang "ipis" with round headlights up front? :)

If it does, that was probably the TX3 :)

Funny thing is I tried to look online for photos but it doesn't have any. I did see some in an old issure of Autocar Asean (March 2002).

Ei, I thought that phrase was reserved for the new City? Okay, bad joke, bad joke :bonkself:

I only saw it from the rear, it was parked on a Church along Bras Basah road (not that that would help:*) ). I've been searching through the net and guess what, here's my possible conclusion. It may just have been a hatch version of what we locally know as the Mazda Familia hehehe  I now feel na yun nga lang yun after all. Di ko kasi nakita yung harap kaya siguro di ko na figure out yung resemblance. I saw a picture of the rear end of a hatch Familia on the net and mukhang yung nga.
  • As a Ford Focus owner, I'm thinking of trading it in for the Mazda 3. I live in the states so I think the engines will be different.
