Nalolongkot ka ba at walang makaosap? Mag TEXT ka na lang!

What about a trivial topic for a change? Seems all the serious people have converged here in Pinoy Culture, not that I'm complaining. icon6.gif

First it was pagers, then it was cellfones, now it's cellfones with text. This thingamajig has become so important that a recent survey among Filipino teens revealed that their cellfones were their most important possession, and that they would "absolutely die if I lost my fone." It is no wonder then that cellfones are selling faster than you can say Nokia.

So, have you ever wondered where the text messages which get passed around originate from? My friends suspect that there's a department in Globe whose specific task is to make these messages. After all, who in his right mind has the patience to type the messages and make those graphics?

If you've got text, why don't you post some of the cute texts you've gotten so we can compare if we've received the same ones.

Here are some of the more interesting texts I've received. Don't be offended by some of them ok? I wasn't the one who made them in the first place. ;)

The most important possession huh? I'm not surprised at all. Each time I lose my Phone, I always get this nagging feeling that someone is trying to contact me. I hate that.

I don't think that there are people from Globe who create the strange texts we always seem to pass around. In fact, junk texts are Globe's greatest nemesis. It slows down their message centers a great deal.

Hey last week I read that the Philippines sends more text messages than the whole of Europe! It's not even available here in the states.

I'd rattle off some of the forwarded text I received, but my fone's busted...I think I somehow locked it accidentally. Bummer! You only realize how big text is in your life when you lose it...(sigh!) (Background: theme song ng 'Lovingly Yours, Helen')

You may not believe it but some people consider these graphics in text as an art. They get a kick out of making them and sending them out. I know of a couple of people who shell out money to buy the programs just to make these graphics. O diba? :)

Honestly, I'm all for text. It does have a lot of advantages such as less money spent on phone calls, it's something to do when stuck in traffic, you CAN bond with friends through text.

But honestly, I just have to ask this, don't you think that texting is more of a status symbol nowadays? You'd see grade school kids who have nowhere really to go but to school and their houses with text messaging? I would like to think that people who get text messaging need it. People such as businessmen, college students and others with more important things to say than to forward jokes and dirty graphics.

Also, I think texters have gone out of control. Do you know that Globe has restricted each person to only 300 msgs a day because apparently someone sent about 1000 msgs in just one day? Talk about unbelievable...

I was the first one in my barkada to have a phone. I bought it for business purposes so it doesn't matter kung scrolling text lang sya and not capable of forwarding. Plus ang bilis bilis pang magtxt at that time. Eh ngayon, almost everybody I know sends me junk txt (some with matching graphics pa which takes a long time to read... scrolling ba naman ?)
I do enjoy the jokes sent to me, it's just that I wish that what I receive in the wee hours of the morning or during class hours are much more important than those jokes, forwards and cute little graphics and that the significant messages would reach me in time.

Chiqui's right, some people create those cute graphics and sell them. Yung iba naman, they sell ringer tones.

yep, text messaging is not "in" there in the states (i've seen some na old models pa yung phones)... but you know what they use there? (especially the airport-hotel shuttle service drivers) NEXTEL =)

There won't be a lack for text messaging advocates. And true, as ChiQui (and most everyone else) pointed out, it does have its great uses.

However, aside from the "status symbol" sour point, you WOULD wish that users would exercise a little more etiquette. Not even etiquette, but rather, common sense and decency. A classroom is hardly the proper place to be sending or receiving messages, for example. There's that story how in a school's audio visual room, the lights go out for the presentation and immediately the room is aglow with an eerie green. Talk about short attention spans.

And what about the (lost) art of conversation? At a restaurant once I spotted two girls at a table, their food almost untouched before them. Lost in animated talk with each other? No. They never spoke, each mesmerized by her own phone as her fingers -- her thumb, really -- did the talking. I only hope their messages were not for each other.

I finally got a phone in September last year, having been convinced of the necessity of it. It still stays off during lunch.

Lasallite Turned Comatose After 5 hours of "TEXT"
    Metro Manila, Philippines

An incoming sophomore of the De La Salle University fell into a deep
coma after 5 straight hours of non-stop text messaging last June 1,
the first day of classes for DLSU.

Witnesses said that the student, whose identity was not revealed,
spent the whole morning exchanging text messages with his seatmates
using his brand-new Glob cellphone, instead of participating in class
discussions. "He even skipped lunch because of text," one of his
"textmates," who refused to be identified, said.

At around 2 PM, the student suddenly fell out of his seat and
convulsed on the floor. His fellow Lasallites rushed him to the
Philippine Veterinary Hospital, where he was transferred to the Manila
General Hospital. The student was declared brain-dead at 8 PM, 6 hours
after he collapsed in the classroom. Fortunately, the cellphone
suffered only minor damage, despite bouncing on the floor several

Initial investigations show that the culprit in this incident is the
microwave radiation emitted by the cellphone. Dr. Gonzales, the
resident neurosurgeon at the MGH, explained that "radiation can kill
body cells. Most cells can regenerate, but brain cells cannot.
Normally, that's no big deal, because we have billions of reserve
brain cells. However, being a Lasallite, the victim has only a small
number of brain cells, and the radiation from the cellphone killed
    them all."

He hastened to add that "there is no cause for public alarm. This is
an isolated incident that will probably never happen anywhere outside
the DLSU campus. Although text messaging is a waste of precious time,
it is rarely fatal. As in everything else, moderation is the key.

Remember, too much sex, ehe, text could be bad for you." As of press time, doctors are debating on whether to take the young
    Lasallite off the respirator.

This item intent no harm to anyone who will read this.
    Ang magpa-epekto... TALO!
The author came from a rival school who lost a game during one of
    UAAP's basketball game.

Stop muna tayo sa topic na yan
    this is from

    here it goes...

    Dear guys,

There is this guy from UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO who wrote a very insulting letter about FILIPINOS...please read and be pissed!!!

Subject: Filipinos.....*make me ••••*From: [email protected] (Art Bell)
    Date: Sat, Dec 5, 1998 11:45 EST
    Message-id: <;[email protected]

As we've all come to notice, in the past few decades, Filipinos have
begun to infest the United States like some sort of disease. Their
extensive involvment in the U.S. Armed Forces is proof of the trashy
kind of qualities all filipinos tend to exhibit on a regular
basis. You can see this clearly by studying the attitudes and cultural
    Icons of most Filipino Americans.
PART 1: Origins of Pinoys/Pinays: Are they really asian?
Well we've come to accept the fact the filipinos come from
a part of the world known as South East Asia. But the term "Asia" is
used in the wrong way. You may notice that contemporary filipino
americans try very hard to associate themselves with groups that we
    know as asian.
I cannot count the number of times I have seen a 'Third World' Filipino try
to connect themselves to the Chinese or Japanese people. There is no
    connection and here's why.
The Philippines is a Third World country. Nothing respectable
has EVER been created by filipino people during our entire humanhistory.
Young filipino men in america have become obsessed with "import
racing". They have an enormously perverted affection for Japanese cars.
It's a common phenomenon. In their minds, these filipinos somehow,
believe that they are asian and that it somehow connects them to japanese
people and japanese cars They often take credit for the ingenuity of
Japanese people and say how it's an "asian thing".
This term..."asian thing" derived directly from African American
slang "black thang". "It's a black thang." "It's an asian thang."
    You can see the connection.
It's even funnier that, in Japan, Filipinos are heavily
discriminated against. The only filipinos that can live successfully
in Japan are the filipino prostitutes. But that's the case for most
filipino people no matter where they live in the world.
Now we've come down to this fact...and it is a fact.
Nothing in Filipino Culture can be seen as asian. They have no
architectural, artistic, or cultural influence which is in ANY way, asian.
Thinking of the great countries in Asia such as Japan, Korea, and China
there is no way you can possibly connect the PhilippineIslands.
This assault by filipino americans to connect themselves
with the great, peoples of North East Asia is foul and disgusting.
PART 2: Young Filipino Americans: The Disease of Society
See for yourself and go to any young filipino's website or
chatroom, and you will be able to see kind of attitude that's stinking up
    america!Some things you might see:
Dialouge such as the following (taken directly from a chatroomin IRC):
(please keep in mind that most people in these chatrooms
are young filipinos between the ages of 13-25)
AznGuRLie: Wzzup EvErYbOdY!!! RhEiNa IsH In Da HoUsE!
(Translation: Her name is Asian Girly. This young woman
obviouslythinks she is somehow asian, but we'll adress that
later. She's simply saying that she has arrived in the chatroom but she's
saying it in the most immature, ghetto, and baby-type way possible. I'm
suprised she said "Rheina is in the house" rather than just "Rheina in the
house".But notice how she spelled the word "is" as "ish". The way a baby would
pronounce it. The AlTeRnAtiNG CaPiTaLs is also verycommon.)
AzNRacr_X: SuP Wit U RhEinA GuRL???
(A filipino male...he's obsessed with japanese cars and masturbates
frequently to Japanese Porno Cartoons, known as 'Hentai'.
His response, is based on the fact he listens to way too much
Puff Daddy and thinks that he's some type of "Player". Player is
a concept invented by Black Americans. It simply means that a young
man has good luck with women. A "Player" often has sex with numerous females
and has more than one girlfriend at a time according to the Blackdefenition.
If the, filipinos have a different definition for this term I'm
not sure. But I think if you apply this term to a filipino male it usually
describes a young man who tries to have sex with girls by meeting them on
the internet. He, may or may not be successful in
accomplishing this, but it just shows the, LOW LEVEL on which filipinos
operate and conduct themselves. What's most interesting about this
conversation so far is that it could be easily mistaken for two African
americans speaking to each other. There's
nothing distinctly 'asian' in this dialouge and it certianly doesn't
reflect the level of respect and intlelligence you find when
Japanese or Chinese people relate to each other in their own language!)
AznGuRLie: NuttiN. WhErEsh RoNeLiA???? ShE At Yo HoUsE???
    AzNRacr_X: NaW GuRL...ShE At HeR CoUsiN's HoUsE.
PiNOY_PLaYR: She at mah houze suckin' on mah dick foo!
(Another filipino male has just joined the conversation! If
you can call it a conversation. At this point it just seems alotlike babytalk.)
    AznGuRLie: Heheheheheheh YoU WiSh!!!!
(Notice how this young woman accepts this disgusting
statement and even has a laugh about it. I think we're finding out how low
these people really are.)AzNRacr_X: ShUT yo MouTH lil foo!!!! Or I ShuT iT Fo U!
PiNOY_PLaYR: Where u at muthafucka?? I beat yo lil punkazz!
AzNRacr_X: My CRiB iz 619!! What u GoNNA Do Foo????
PiNOY_PLaYR: I gunna beat yo lil azz...afta yo gurl finishez
    suckinon, mah NUTZ!! PUWAHAHHAHAAHAHAHAHhhahahaahahaah!
AznGuRLie: Hehheheheh NoW BoyZ WhY U fiGhtin LiKE tHaT?? U
kNoW icAn, suCK u boTH!! LiL RhEiNA wAnTz 2 pLaY 2!!!!!!!!
(This scum level of human interaction is not only disgusting and offensive,
but pathetic as well. And there's a lot more than
this going, on in chatrooms all over the internet every hour.)
Try visiting a young filipino's web site too. You'll see
something called the "Asian IRC Ring". It has to do with thechatrooms.
The most horrible thing about this is that these TRASHY people are trying to
associate themselves with Asia again!! People in Asia don't
act like, this at all. What we are seeing here is the natural
filipino in it's element with full access to technologyand this is how theyact!
You will consistently see this behavior over and over again.
Anotherinteresting thing is that these "thirdworld" people
also frequent IRC chatroomssuch as #chinese #japan and #asian. They must
believe that they are somehow related racially or culturally to NorthAsians.
But it's completely WRONG! There might have been some distant contact with
China and even less with Japan during World War II, but these people are
actuallymore closely related to african americans and mexican americans.
Do the parents of these young filipinos know what's going on?? Would
they accept this? I believe that they would and do. This is the,
natural "Trash" element in filipinos manifesting itself.
Nothing good has ever come from Philippines and I don't believe
anything good ever will.PART 3: The Conclusion: Recogonizing your Roots ( A
    Message to,Filipinos)To all filipino people:
Please recognize yoour ROOTS! You come from the the Third World!
Your country is a disgusting and filthy place. Most people there, live
in poverty! Your culture has MUCH MORE SPANISH influence than chinese,
and absolutely no JAPANESE influence whatsoever. People in
Japan and China, do not act like you. They do not constantly talk
