BMW 1 Series

What do you think of the BMW 1 Series? I'm expecting it to sell for P1-1.8M

Top Gear says it can do 0 to 60 in 11 secs.

The 1-series is arguably the most conservatively styled of the Chris Bangle-era BMWs...and that's precisely why I seem to like it more than the new Five and Seven.

I like the hatchback configuration, but because of the FR hardware (rear differentials and half-shafts), I've heard it's got cramped rear quarters. That might hurt sales here as we've gotten used to the space liberated by cars with the FF drivetrain (basically ALL Japanese volume-selling compact cars).

0-100 km/h in 11 secs? Is that sprint time for the 116i? Not bad :)

Pinoys will buy it cause it's an affordable BMW. ;) The 11 sec quoted from TG didnt mention which 1 series. I find it slow.

Sabi nang taga BMW sakin eh mga 1.450M ang BMW 116i.
  • okay yan, pero mas gusto ko un 2 series... 2 series will be 2 door coupe and maybe cabriolet version of the 1 series

ive also heard rumors of a M1...hehehe

those who dont know...bmw has changed the 'number' system for their fleet...odd numbered series' will be the sedans and estates(wagon/5-dr hatch) and the even numbered series' will be the coupes, cabriolets/convertibles and roadsters

and all will have M versions of their own ex. M5(soon to be released)...in the future the current E46 M3 will be replaced by the M4

There will NOT be an M1. The name's already been used for BMW's famous wedge-profile 1978 exotic. An "M2" is much more likely. ;)

    Paolo...
    Most 1.6L cars do 11 seconds to 100 km/h anyway. :)

The 1-series and the Mini Cooper are NOT brothers. The Mini is FF (front-wheel drive), the One is FR (rear-wheel drive). Besides the Mini is ridiculously cramped at the back. The One should be at least a better deal.
  • oh my bad...i was thinking M2 not M1, i saw a 'concept' of the M2 on a car magazine last month :)

True, but the Neon SRT-4 has a blower (i.e. it's turbocharged) and is not available locally.

Maybe I should've rephrased my statement...

"Most 1.6-liter-class cars without turbos do 11 seconds to 100 km/h anyway."

Based on the current local volume-selling cars (ZE121 Corolla Altis, ES Civic, Lynx 1.6, soon-to-come Mazda 3), 11 seconds is the average century sprint time.
  • Hehehe... I know you said most but still I am expecting a bit more from BMW. This is supposed to be their pocket rocket.

This isn't 100% confirmed, but I've heard from Autocar UK that the 116i won't be the only 1-series hatch. Other engines will be coming to its engine bay.

For starters there may be a 2.0L 4-cylinder version, and in the first time in recent memory, BMW might fit a turbocharger to it later on. (Been years since I've heard of a factory turbo BMW.)

BMW have also registered the "130i" name, so it's likely the 235bhp 3.0L straight-six (Z4, X3, X5, 530i, 730i) might also find its way to the One as well.

    :)

Will the 3.0 liter straight 6 (one of the best engines currently offered by BMW) fit in the cramped engine bay of the 1 series? I don't think it will fit unless they modify the plumbing and set-up of the engine. Besides, if it fits, it might be a pretty tight fit that will be very hard to work on.

The 1 series definitely looks promising. Even if it comes with a puny (by BMW standards) 1.6 engine but at a temptingly affordable price, I want to have one.

Like I said, all that's known for sure is that the "130i" name has already been registered by BMW. No one can tell at this point whether or not the engine this moniker suggests will make it into BMW's baby.

I do agree with you on the straight-six possibly not fitting into the engine bay. BMW might resort to some sheetmetal alterations (e.g. physically lengthening the car) to accomodate the engine.

Mercedes-Benz did a similar job with its new C55 AMG. The front fenders are actually longer than a stock C-class, all to fit the 5.5L V8.
  • The C55 AMG's pretty much useless. The gains arent that much. :(

    C55 not enough for you?

    Turn to Brabus...

Ever heard of the 425BHP CV8? That C-class packs a mean 6.1L V8...them Brabus guys are really mental
