Public or private school? — PinoyExchange

Public or private school?

I know, i know. We've heard countless horror stories about the sad state of public schools in the country. But with the economy the way it is, its really a financial burden to put our kids in private schools.

So if worse comes to worst, would you do it? Or would you just homeschool your kids?

I hope walang magagalit. Sobrang kapabayaan naman ng government sa public school system natin, from the textbooks to the school buildings itself. What more the intangibles? The quality of the teachers, etc.
  • for me, public school is okay. as long as there's a limited number of students per class. that by the way is for grade school and high school...pagdating naman ng college, state uni is alright too...di rin naman kayang tawaran ang mga grads ng UP or PUP. kahit mura ang fees, quality education naman.

for one, it really depends on the student and the parents. merong mga grads ng private or exclusive schools that doesn't fair very well in the job market. at meron din namang mga grads ng public school who's excelling in their chosen fields! at meron din namang mga grads ng public school na dahil di nagabayan ng magulang eh tuluyang pinabayaan ang pag aaral at napariwara...

so really, education is a responsibility not of the govt, not of the schools, but of the students and the parents.

i came from both public and private school. and from my experience, masipag mostly ang mga teachers sa public school, than my teachers sa private school...mas madaming books at homework sa private dahil tamad mag discuss ang teachers namin...but since it's a private school, maganda ang facilities like the buildings, the chairs, and the miscellaneous fees are deliriously high too! ha ha ha!!! the only advantage you get is the name of the school after you graduate...Uy! graduate ka ng.....?! Mahal dun ah! ;)

Let's face it...extremes talaga ang private and public schools dito sa atin. But what if you hit rock bottom and there's no money coming in? Would you just get yourself deeper into debt by borrowing money just to keep your child in the private school? Or pahinga muna anak?
  • I believe in Beck's opinion, that it really depends on the student him/herself. Of course there are exceptions to the "rule". And of course there are some public school students who became very successful.

But frankly, nowadays, it isn't just the "brains" that matter. Oo nga, matalino ka, galng ka ng public school tapos you got into a scholarship sa Ateneo o UP or whatever prestigious university. Pero the way a private schooler (from grade school to high school) acts is more often than not, different. I know a lot if people would get mad.

One more thing, connections - it is so important to know the right people, and the elite (those whose parents are Presidents of big companies) are enrolled in "expensive" schools (we're talking elementary and high school here). After graduation from College these same people would help you start a good career. Lalo na kung barkada mo. Masakit man tanggapin pero ito ang nangyayari. I'm not for this system but this is ore prevalent in the Philippines.

And another thing, though katawa tawa ang perception na nagbabayad ng mahal e wala namang difference sa pagtuturo, let's face reality again..... sa Pilipinas malimit mag generalize na pag graduate ka ng ganitong school automatic na matalino ka or "better" than others - hindi siguro sa academics, pero in a way, they can handle themselves well, speak English better, and are perceived to be more confident and smart. Although it is true na "depende sa tao yan", still we've got to open our eyes to the ills of our society.

It's better to be an "exception" pero I know my child will have to prove herself every now and then because of this bad system in our Philippine education.
  • Me mga public school naman na magagaling ah.. like Manila Science,Yung sa Quezon City? Scienc School din,Sa Marikina Science HS din ba? Ramon Magsaysay...

  • The Prep school ( I have a friend whose kid studies their, I'm not sure if it's called a prep school though and I'm also not sure if there's a nursery/kindergarten school) , Elementary School and High School of UP Diliman is good even of it is a public school.
  • Choose the school where your child will enrol. It does not matter if it is public or private as long as the quality is there and that you can afford it. What is the point of enrolling your child in a private school if you cannot afford it? Live within your means.

There are really good public schools out there but these are more exceptions than the norm. Private schools do not necessarily mean better, though. Come to think of it, there are private schools who'd do anything to have a higher passing rate in the UPCAT and of course, there are public schools doing the same thing as well.

As for connections, yes, it is true. It is one's destiny that is carried from your parents down to you and you to your children. HOWEVER, connections or networks can be made. It is just a matter of personal attitude. I mean, if you are open to network with people from all walks of life and you are not intimidated to approach people of high stature, then you will not have any problems.

i want to avoid catholic education. i feel we should leave the 16th century once and for all.
  • syempre as much as possible we want the best schools for our kids. kung d kaya ng budget ok narin sa public schools pero make sure na quality yung way of teaching nila at yung mga teachers syempre. smart ngayon ang mga bata kaya we have to enhance their knowledge by enrolling them to first class schools.
  • I'm a soon to be teacher and as part of our practicum we are made to teach in both public and private schools. As most of us here, I too have heard horror stories about how difficult it is to teach or study in a public school and because of this I have been pretty keen on sending my son to a private school. But having been exposed to the two environments and having met the educators of two very different institutions, I found out that aside from the better facilities of the private school, there's little or no difference at all to the teaching methodologies of the teachers. As a matter of fact, I discovered that the teachers from the public school worked twice as hard as those from the ritzy high school (I'm a Social Science student-teacher for high school) and spend twice as much of their time preparing the lessons and activities for the kids.

Based on my observations and my experience, I can honestly say that I can send my son of to a public school and will be sure that he'll be getting the same education as those kids who will be paying A LOT for their tuition. SO YES, I'll be enrolling my son in a public school.

Share ko lang experience ko about schools in Pinas ha.

When my son was 3 I sent him to Public Pre school, we were living in Cabanatuan Nueva, Ecija. I wanted him to have interaction with kid's his age kasi kaya 3 pa lang pinag aral ko na.

After that I enrolled him as Junior Casa in a montessori school still in Cabanatuan. Okay lang, madami bayarin kasi they always have this activity every month. My son is good in Math, and I can say that they give your kids the opportunity to excel in fields they are good at.
kaya lang I was expecting him to learn to read na.

after that, medyo naging broke ako, kaya I decided to send him to a Public school, well, natuto siya magbasa, kasi magaling yung teacher nya, the thing nga lang late ko kasi siya napaenroll eh, so malayo yung section nya, hindi sila pwede magakrun ng mataas na grade.

I think okey lang yung public school, kasi I know a lot of people who excelled in life kahit public school lang, icheck mo yung background nung school, kung sumasali ba sila sa mga interschool competitions like Math Olympiad and Science Competitions, For high school naman I think yung Phil. Science High School maganda ang standard.
