confession

...just because
I don't know if this was asked before. When did the sacrament of reconciliation/penance originated? Did Jesus ever heard confessions from His disciples?

I don't know how to verse kasi hindi ako ngsasaulo ng linya.
But this is what i remember. Jesus said "Whatever you hold bound on earth, shall be bound in heaven and whatever you hold loose on earth, shall be loose in heaven".
I think he wouldn't hear confessions as a priest would today. (you can always ask a priest/theologion for verification)Just think, the number of followers today and during His time. He only had 12 disciples and he formed them, teaching them and correcting them (Better attend a doctrine class about confession cause those who have studied have a better way of explaining).
It was only too sad that few people practice it. It cannot be denied the all-too-uncomfortable feeling of going to a priest for confession. Too bad, not many too encouraged it and not many priests are available for it. And during those times, you would really just succumb into wanting to confess directly to God because why would you confess to somebody who is also not perfect.
Without confession, Christian life would be oh so difficult.
Okay...let's see....
When somebody got a problem, it is very consoling to have somebody around who would listen. It is so hard to keep it all by yourself. And what do you get aside from a pair of listening ears? Sound advice too if you're receptive and open-minded already. That's how it was! Our Lord understood our human nature. It would be very liberating to let go of a burden and what could be more burdening than sin.
We all believe that every individual is unique. There are a lot of things peculiar to only one human being ( and how many billions are we?) To go to confession is to get to know yourself too. Sometimes we tend to think that we already know ourselves. But we fail to discover the pride that is in us and selfishness too. That reflecting upon our motives for the actions we do, we find selfishness. And there is a lot to know about ourselves as in A LOT. One can discover that through frequent confession.
It is a battle we have here. A battle within ourselves. This life, is a a battle. One should not only be equipped with the necessary things to move on (money, security etc), one should be trained. How else one could be trained but a close monitoring so as to get to know your padawan and eventually assure the victory. A confessor is that, a trainor. Not because he is a good one but because God is using him to become that, trainor. Bottom line, is still God.
When one goes to confession, one should imagine going to a doctor. You tell the doctor the simple truths about yourself. And then you are given medication. Does it hurt? Of course. It hurts our pride. But that's what we want to eliminate, right. So better hurt the pride.
It fascinates me how kids find it very easy to go to confession without any single protest. Why? Because they don't have pride. Really, people would ask "What is the difference between confessing to a priest and confessing directly to God?" Exactly!!! What difference there is such that one would rather opt the latter over the former. If there is no difference pala, why wouldn't you choose the first one?
One thing is sure, those who frequent it, live their lives happily because they know what to struggle about. They know their weaknesses. And they strive to get over them. They know their strengths and don't boast around that they got them. They are busy people. Busy about doing good and improving themselves. Not poking around like some old-maids quick to point out what's wrong with other people.0 -

I go to confession (at least once a year--church law) as part of the 'ritual' of being a catholic. Although I don't believe in confession per se...0 -
Beacuse I want to... I grew up in a catholic setting. I may not agree to all it's teachings but it's a part of me already, practices and all...If I turn away from it, a part of me will be taken away. It's as simple as that. I don't go around 'fishing' for a type of religion that suits my lifestlye.0

heheh, di na nga nagkumpisal yung apostles eh. hinulaan na Niya. peter and judas iscariot are concrete examples. nevertheless, God's omniscience is never an excuse to sincerely express one's repentance. aba kung si Lord na lang manghuhula ng kasalanan natin at di na natin kelangan mangumpisal, makikipagbati ka pa kaya, paano mo mapapatunayan sa sarili mo at sa Diyos na nagsisisi ka na?
logically and ethically, the sacrament of Reconciliation i think, prevents spiritual complacency. and uh, historically it is backed by the Jewish practice of atonement. and teka, bakit kelangan sa pari. kse siya ang "human" na magbibigay ng penance. of course, kahit direct kay God yung kumpisal di naman bubuka ang langit at kikidlat para maiukit sa bato kung ano yung form of atonement na gagawin mo. kung tutuusin, the presence of the priest allays one's conscience kse his penance and God's absolution *through the priest (ala nga namang kumidlat atmagsalita si God) gives the assurance of his forgiveness through the sincere performance of the prescribed form of purgation.0 -
The sacrament of reconciliation should not be treated as some mechanical thing that you have to undergo. Unless it is done with a sincerely contrite heart, what's the point? ::shrugs::
It is good, though, that you're not into 'fishing for religions'. But I do encourage you to look into your faith a bit deeper, rather than just treating is as a religion of (in)convenience. Know what I mean?
anawim, good explanation.
ahmed. Same goes with any other spiritual leader that you'll think of, I guess. In your case, how sure are you that your local imam (is that how you call your spiritual leader?) is "pure and sin-free"?
I could go into a lengthy explanation as to why there is a sacrament of reconciliation for Catholics, but anawim sums it up pretty well. And I don't know if ahmed is serious in pursuing this topic or was just making pithy comments.0 -

Well, I don't confess to any imam, for all I know, they may be like the catholic priests we read in the news...I confess to God, Who created me, Who knows me better than I know myself, Who doesn't need any mediator, Who has the absolute power, Whose Godhood is absolute.
Although my comments don't sound serious, well they are..dead serious.0 -
Father, please forgive me, I jacked-off this morning, I have foot fetish, I love smelling women's underwear, I use a ***** for my *** every now and then, I do it with my dog...
Seriously, and I apologize for my language, but how on earth could you confess those kinds of sins to a priest?!?!?0 -
