'Oh Tokyo' and Eleanor Nishiumi (WINS Sky Cable)

Hello Everybody....

Uhm, I just wanted to ask kung cno pa ang nakaka-aala kay Ms. Eleanor Nishiumi at yung show na Oh! Tokyo sa Sky Cable sa WINS Channel? This program is the ultimate entertaining show, lalo na si Eleanor very natural ang reporting niya at pag-interview niya sa mga tao... Nakakaaliw siya sobra, lalo na pag-kakain siya ng mga patikim or mag-suskat ng mga outfit etc. aliw talag siya....

Plz post in ur messages, opinions, info's and updates kung ano na nangyari sa Oh Tokyo! i really miss this show, i think Eleanor would make it big kung sa local channel siya mag-work... di ba?

OKAY, I'll come clean. There was a time in the not-so-distant past when I was hooked on a very obscure cable channel. Nope, it wasn't the French music channel MCM, although it was terribly cool in a Pepe Le Pew kind of way. Neither was it Deutsche Welle, even if I watched "Heat" religiously. It was WINS, the unintentionally amusing local Japanese station. Bucking the whole MTV trend, WINS rammed its way into my pop culture consciousness with a show that made me slap my knees bloody-"Oh! Tokyo."

A cross between Fran Drescher and Kuya Germs, Eleanor Nishiumi was the obvious star of "Oh! Tokyo." Her makeshift take on TV presenting made her a one-woman multilingual circus. Her makeshift take on TV presenting made her the obvious star of "Oh! Tokyo." Interviewing bystanders with the refinement of a wrecking ball, she pulled in quite a cult following, from the really lowbrow to those trendy enough to buy Chanel surfboards. She was first in command when in came to scrutinizing the oddities of life in Tokyo within the context of a greater cross-cultural experience.

Poking at everything from omelet rice to vintage clothing, Eleanor turned the tables on our notions of typical Japanese behavior by acting like a Japanese tourist even if she was Filipino. Her interpretations were at times crude but that made them even more precious. In one classic episode, she stepped inside "Coup d'‚tat Chic,"... a Harajuku thrift store, and picked out a Trix the Rabbit t-shirt. She instantly connected it to a type of chocolate, which was wrong on so many levels since Trix is a cereal brand.

Instead of boiling my brain down to a thick, meaty paste, this particular episode of "Oh! Tokyo" made me realize that Eleanor Nishiumi was mad awesome. She had the balls to put it out there at the risk of looking like a dumbass! Having been to a few parts of the world, I also have my own Eleanor Nishiumi moments. Whether committed due to bad translation, gross misinterpretation, or downright silliness, these cultural bloopers are my big-up to "Oh! Tokyo."

    laugh trip!!! eleanor rocks!!!

  • Hahaha! Kanina yata or kahapon 'yun, she featured famous meeting places sa isang city sa Japan. Tapos, may nakita pa siyang Pinoy.

She then asked the guy kung saan masarap kumain na dun lang sa lugar na 'yun makikita... tapos, when the guy answered, it turned out na hindi lang pala dun sa lugar na yun makikita 'yung sinabi nung guy... sabi ni Evelyn, "Eh hindi lang naman dito sa (name of the city) makikita 'yun eh... Ikaw naman o..." or something to that effect, hahaha!

    Gutsy girl talaga siya! *okay*
  • Hay nako, she's a gay icon! :)

BTW, asawa nya ba yung cameraman?

Classic trademark nya eh yung kapag napapahawak siya sa cheeks niya kapag may kinakain na malamig. ;)
  • I remember her!!!!!

Does anyone remember when she rode that roller coaster sa isang amusement park? tama "wheeeeee! whooooo!"She's so funny!
tapos when she had to ride this bike...na iikot? she can't make the bike move talaga.
