Opel Astra

Is it worth getting?... mixed reviews mostly... car magazines rate it highly... users here don't... I visited a GM dealership and was impressed by the solidness... want this car to stand out from the altises and civics... i fear it might be phased out with the introduction of the chevy optra... is this baseless?

IMO, i wouldnt get the Astra. Its already an old model (relatively) and when i you look at the classifieds like the Manila Bulletin during weekends, you'll see a good number of relatively new ones being sold at low prices... why?

If its German engineering and feel that you're after, i'd probably get a 2nd hand BMW 3 series instead (i.e. a '97-'99 320i matic can go for P700K-P900K). Parts and services is more widely available due to the number of Euro specialty shops around Metro Manila that cater to BMW and Benz. In contrast, the Astra only has a few sources for service and parts backing. I already had experience with GM Autoworld service before and i wasnt that happy (it took me around an hour or so just to get the car in). I also encountered a lady customer who wasnt happy with the service of her Astra.
  • i've ridden on one before... as yojimbo said "its very solid!" and the power is pretty good for a 1600cc car. yun nga lng pretty old na. you should wait for a newer model

We bought an Astra almost 2 years ago. Ang masasabi ko lang eh MABAGAL. I wish they just put a 1.8L engine on it. Sa bigat ng kaha ng Astra, they should have put a bigger engine, kahit 2L pa!!! On the upside, I like the build quality of the car, it's pretty solid.

    :drive:
  • i drive an astra. i regret buying it. parts are so expensive. as what is mentioned above, you might get pissed when you'd have it serviced. it's true.
  • ^^ i concur. had to have the steering pump replaced... casa charged 100k php for parts and labour!!!
  • nakasakay nako.

comfortable naman ang ride. although yun nga parts would be expensive and mababa na resale value

  • We have 2 in our family. Good cars but very disappointed with the after sales service.

I've said this in another thread: Don't ever buy anything from AutoWorld. You will regret it.
  • puro bagito technician sa autoworld, get a trusted, experienced mechanic.

wag na wag bibili ng opel
  • Slightly off topic... but can we hear from Opel Vectra owners? What's the feedback on this car? Is it just as crappy as the Astra (based on the reviews above)? I'm being offered a low-mileage, 1999 Vectra sedan with a 2.5 V6 engine for cheap. Is it something worth looking into?

    I'd appreciate the advice. Thanks.
