Memories from 25 years of Eat, Bulaga!
    STAR BYTES by Butch Francisco

    (First of two parts)

Last Saturday, Joey de Leon generously lent his legendary talent once more to Startalk by accepting the show’s invitation to act as co-host. The night before, he was in Clark taping the anniversary presentation of Eat, Bulaga! and he had a lot of stories about the special that he excitedly shared with me. Unfortunately, I cannot share with you what Joey told me because I wouldn’t want to preempt the Eat, Bulaga! silver anniversary show that will be aired on GMA 7 this Saturday, Nov. 27 at 11:30 a.m. (please take note of that so you don’t miss anything) –with the continuation the next day, Sunday, after Daddy Di Do Du (that should be around 10 p.m. or thereabouts).

But this much I can share with you: It was a very emotional show for everyone involved in Eat, Bulaga! and tears – actually tears of joy – flowed all throughout the program. In the opening sequence alone, Joey said that everyone was already crying. The dam burst, however, when the show paid tribute to two of its dearly departed members: Helen Vela and Rio Diaz.

Up to the end of the special, tears continued to flow – to the point that even the people in the audience were also crying.

That kind of reaction was to be expected. After all, what other show – one that airs six days a week for almost two hours daily – can last 25 years?

After hearing all those exciting stories from Joey, I turned to Lolit Solis and asked her if it was also possible for Startalk to last 25 years. She thought long and hard before spewing out: "It’s possible – but after 25 years with the two of us baka ang GMA 7 ang umiyak."

Seriously, however, 25 years is a long time – anywhere – especially on television. The 25 years of Eat, Bulaga! therefore is no mean feat. In fact, the show had stayed on the air this long that I do not know of any Filipino who does not have memories of this noontime program.

Below, let me share with you 25 personal memories and scenes culled from this unbeatable lunchtime fare:

    1) In the early ’70s, the only performers on TV who wore undershirts colored sandos, actually – were dancers like Lito Calzado (father of the great beauty Iza Calzado). The gentlemen who came out on TV that time wore mostly suits – especially the hosts of talk and variety shows. (Imagine Eddie Ilarde on Student Canteen or Archie Lacson on Penthouse 7). But if they were feeling a bit informal, they donned long-sleeved shirts with or without a tie. Tito, Vic and Joey changed all that.

On Eat, Bulaga!, they freely wore the very casual collarless T-shirts and jeans. If I picture a scene on Eat Bulaga therefore, the images that come to mind are of T-shirts and jeans – very, very relaxed. Obviously, it took Tito, Vic and Joey to revolutionize the getup on TV.

    2) Debraliz Valasote pretending to be hopelessly in love with Joey de Leon. This was an on-camera act that successfully drew a lot of laughter from TV audiences.

    3) Tito Sotto harmlessly flirting with female guests on the air and a recorded voice-over from the background suddenly announces: "Lagot ka kay Puti!" – referring to Sotto’s very fair-skinned wife, Helen Gamboa.

    4) Puti herself – Helen Gamboa – making her regular Saturday afternoon appearance on Eat, Bulaga! It was always a joy watching the former Pop Superstar singing or hosting in her usual wholesome style.

    5) Endless trailers of movies from Regal Films. Back then, we still enjoyed watching sneak preview of forthcoming films (something we find intolerable now that there are so many of them during intermission in mall theaters). In the early days of Eat, Bulaga!, there were hardly any commercials coming in and the show had to accommodate instead films trailers that paid much, much lower than the regular 30-second TV advertisements. The show, however, is eternally grateful to Lily Monteverde for supporting a small program like Eat, Bulaga! back then.

    6) A very emotional moment while Rico J. Puno sings to a letter-writer in the portion Send in Your Dreams, which is predecessor of today’s very successful Wish Ko Lang.

    7) The late Rey de la Cruz and Rading Carlos, the talent managers of then fierce rivals Rio Locsin and Lorna Tolentino, respectively, trading colorful on-air barbs – sometimes complete with props and costumes.

    8) Tetchie Agbayani at the peak of the Playboy (German edition) controversy doing guest co-hosting stints in Eat, Bulaga !– in lieu of Chiqui Hollmann who had resigned earlier from the show. Another regular female guest co-host then was Eileen Macapagal, who eventually became the wife of Joey de Leon.

    9) Coney Reyes singing It’s My Turn when – after unceremoniously getting kicked out of Student Canteen two months earlier – she joined rival Eat, Bulaga! Coney’s first day on Eat, Bulaga! coincided with the show’s going Domsat.

    10) Our beloved helpers at home singing and dancing in the hit contest Maid in the Philippines. This proved to be a wake-up call for most of us to be kinder and more considerate to the people who make life easier for us at home.

    11) All those biba girls in their ruffled clothes singing, dancing or reciting poetry in the Little Miss Philippines contest. The most awaited segment, of course, is the interview portion because you can never tell how those cute babies would respond to the questions of hosts Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon.

    12) Aiza Seguerra – the most successful product of Little Miss Philippines (to think she was only fifth placer when she joined the contest). Never had we seen a child star that smart on TV. I know of working couples who had been wishing to have a little girl (after a succession of boys) who would come home at lunchtime only to watch Aiza Seguerra. (To be concluded)

Halos 50,000, more or less ang nasa loob

isang malaki at aircon bus.
    napakasarap at masaganang hapunan.

yung isang libong mga bata ay all in uniform at in unison ang kilos.

Ana & Soraya at marami pang iba.

together with Donna Cruz and Jessa Zaragoza.

    talaga namang very impressive.

Napakarami palang malalaking artista na nagbuhat sa show. Maraming

    sabay nilang galaw!

programa.
    memorable events nina TVJ.

number na `yon `ay it's one of the best and moving opening numbers ng
    isang programa'.

marami pang ibang artista na talaga namang hataw to death, huh!

Keempee de Leon, Toni Gonzaga, Radah at Thor.

nilang Super Sireyna, Ikaw At Echo, Doble Kara at Sari-Sari Awards.
Performers doon sina Allan K, Teri Onor, Jose Manalo, Gladys

Lani Mercado, Pops Fernandez, Chiqui Hollman at Coney Reyes.

May special VTR message sina Ces Quesada at Christine Jacob. Bilang

Silver Special! More inside info tomorrow!

Memories from 25 years of Eat, Bulaga!
    STAR BYTES by Butch Francisco
    The Philippine Star 11/25/2004

    (Second of two parts)
Since its mounting last week at the Clark Expo, I’ve been very excited to watch what is being touted as the greatest show on earth: the Eat, Bulaga! 25th anniversary show, which will be shown on GMA 7 this Saturday, Nov. 27 at 11:30 a.m. – with the continuation scheduled for airing the next day after Sunday’s Daddy Di Do Du.

This two-part special will surely bring back beautiful memories of past episodes of Eat, Bulaga!. In my column last Tuesday, I already went down memory lane and began a list of 25 memorable scenes and images of Eat, Bulaga!. I’ve already enumerated 12. Below is the continuation of my list.

    13. Four dots. In early 1989, ABS-CBN ran this intriguing TV plug that featured four dots. The keen TV observer that I was, I managed to figure out the mysterious TV plug in about a week and promptly called Salvii Casino of ABS-CBN merchandising. The four dots – so I told Salvii – stood for 1) Eat, Bulaga! 2) Aguila 3) Coney Reyes on Camera and 4) Okay Ka Fairy Ko. I felt like shouting "Rumpelstiltskin!" but Salvii hushed me and asked me not to write about the mystery I had just solved by myself. The first three shows that time, you see, were airing on RPN-9 – with Okay Ka doing great business on Channel 13. The four shows, however, decided to move to ABS-CBN starting that year and helped strengthen Channel 2’s programming.

    14. The premiere telecast of Eat, Bulaga! on ABS-CBN on Feb. 18, 1989. After 10 years on Channel 9, Eat, Bulaga! found a new home on Channel 2 and for this momentous event, the show was staged at the Big Done. On this special day, Lani Mercado was also introduced as the show’s new female co-host to fill in the void left by Coney Reyes who had to go on maternity leave. Lani didn’t stay very long in the show because she herself eventually also got pregnant. I particularly remember this episode because I was leaving for Hong Kong that same day and I almost missed my flight because I stayed glued to the program to the very end. But I swear, the show was so spectacular, I thought it was worth missing the Hong Kong trip.

    15. Plinky Recto as part of the Eat, Bulaga! barkada. Plinky did a soap commercial first, but if I got it right, the Eat, Bulaga! people noticed her when she appeared as trophy girl in the 1989 Gawad Urian where her beauty really sparkled.

    16. Ces Quesada’s much-awaited dance number. During the third quarter of 1989, there was this running joke in the show about how Ms. Quesada, then still very new in Eat, Bulaga!, had been rarin’ to do a dance number in the program. There was so much to-do about this dance number – constant plugging during the show and all – but at the end of the program when Ces was already all dressed up (in a Carmen Miranda-inspired outfit), the other hosts would announce that they had ran out of time and that number had to rescheduled the next day. The same thing would happen the following day and the day after next – until about a week or so when Ces, at long last, was allowed to finish that production number.

    17. Rio Diaz on Eat, Bulaga!. It was Rio’s joining Eat, Bulaga! in the early ‘90s that prompted me to do an interview with her for this paper. We became fast friends after that and I have Eat, Bulaga! to thank for giving me that opportunity to know personally one of the most wonderful people to have walked the surface of earth.

    18. Millet Advincula as Eat, Bulaga! co-host. Remember that girl who shouts "Tonio!" at the airport in the Duty Free commercial in 1991? On the strength of that ad, she became part of Eat, Bulaga!. Millet was pretty and wholesome, but unfortunately didn’t stay long in the program.

    19. The classroom scenes in Eat, Bulaga! where the barkada – playing students – had to participate in the amusing knock-knock-who‘s-there game. Nova Villa played the teacher and she was so funny with the way she "terrorized" her very undisciplined students.

    20. Ruby Rodriguez sucking up to teacher Nova Villa and succeeds with her agenda because they both spoke the Ilocano dialect.

    21. Christine Jacob and her atrocious singing in Eat, Bulaga!.

    22. Christine Jacob with her improved singing many years later. Only shows that practice makes perfect.

    23. Toni Rose Gayda – A true survivor of the noontime landscape. From rival Lunch Date, she became part of the Eat, Bulaga! and is now one of its beloved members. Actually, anything Toni Rose does on TV, I watch and I’ve seen how she has improved in her craft through the years.

    24. This scenario was never recorded on television but is still part of my Eat, Bulaga! memories. In 1996, during one of my conversations with Eat, Bulaga! executive Malou Fagar, she had asked me if I could do guest co-hosting for the program (the Bulaga barkada was not yet that firm that time). Unfortunately, Eat, Bulaga! had already moved to GMA 7 and I was with ABS-CBN. I pleaded with a Channel 2 executive to please let me do it even for one week. The answer was No – and looking back, that was understandable. But it was a heartbreak for me – losing my chance to be part of the history of this wonderful noontime program even for just a while.

    25. The seamless portion between Eat, Bulaga! and Startalk every Saturday. This is the turnover from one show to the next without breaking into a gap. I always have fun doing it because I feel that in this manner, I too am part of Eat, Bulaga!, which undeniably is the most successful show in the history of Philippine television.
